Antler Up Podcast

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 142 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by our good friends Tom Runscavage and PJ Matarazzo.  Both of these guys live in my old stomping ground of NEPA.  With it being early in the season both of these guys have had success filling tags and getting on deer and wanted to hear from them what they key in on this time of the year. PJ starts the conversation off with sharing his success story already from this season where he filled his DE on a velvet buck and how he has been able to find success there the last couple of years. Both share what food sources they key in on and what they do when that source dries up.

We just have a fun conversation between the 4 of us.  Dimitri shares his thoughts on his end of October OH hunt, who influences PJ and how he has taken traits from these hunters and how he has made his own style.  Some good stuff is in this episode! Tom shares what gear he is using and we discuss hunting in higher elevations, hunting the so-called “October Lull” and slowing down in the deer woods! Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Antler Up!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 141 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by NDA’s Chief Conservation Officer Kip Adams.  This is the second time Kips has been on the podcast and I always enjoy catching up with him. Kip is a PA resident and we chat about gearing up for this hunting season, especially right now. Kip has two kids and with my daughter Norah coming out with me this year I asked Kip how to help make hunting fun for kids. After that we dove into how 2022 forecasts and the struggles of 2021. From how deer communicate, finding bedding, using buck sign to cash in on a buck early in the season. The last piece Kip dived into is controlling your emotion in the heat of the moment and the practice to better your skills for that one opportunity.

Kip does a ton of awesome content for NDA! From written content, guest speaking to making great educational videos. Kip is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to whitetails. Be sure to check his content out over at

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 140 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Steve Sherk from Sherks Guide Service.  Steve resides in Western PA where he hunts the big woods of PA.  The last time Steve was on the podcast we had a ton of topics regarding buck hunting tactics.  Well round two is finally here after a year.  Steve wrapped up a two year trail cam data study which he shared on the Exodus Podcast with our friends Chad and Cam.  We get Steve to share hunting strategies for specific weeks, finding bucks after the shift and so much more!   We wrap up the conversation with Steve answering a few listener questions.  Thanks to Steve for coming on again and sharing a ton of great content!!

To start things off in the podcast Steve shares what to focus on coming into the early season and how bedding plays a major role in this.  Follow this up by chatting about shifting cameras, and when he doesn’t shift cameras because he doesn’t want to disturb specific buck areas.  A question came up about not only how Steve tracks buck shifting areas, but does as well and his philosophy on shooting a doe early or not.  Then Steve shares his strategy regarding the three C’s (Cover, Cold Fronts & Cameras).  It was awesome to hear some techniques and stories regarding the three C’s.  Then the meat and potatoes of the podcast Steve breaks down how he would hunt each time frame of the big woods and ties in his trail cam data study for this period.  So much great info in this episode and Part 2 of Buck School with Steve as a freaking blast! Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Antler Up!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 139 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and Jeremy are joined by Matt Wiswesser from Venator Human Performance and Nodens Outdoors.  With the season fast approaching for PA and a lot of states already kicking off, Matt shares some strength training and mindset strategies to keep you ready and prepared for your hunts.  Matt is Nodens Outdoors Chief of Operation and shares some awesome things they have going on for helping Veterans through bowhunting, the outdoors and performance this upcoming season.  Matt is a hunter from northern New Jersey and shares his experience hunting private and public land.  Ultimately we have a fun bs conversation about improving your own self as a hunter and as an individual.

To start things off in the podcast Matt briefly introduces who he is and what his role is with his own company Venator Human Performance and Nodens Outdoors.  Matt is going to be doing some pretty awesome stuff this fall for Veterans where he and the Nodens Outdoors crew will be going to VA during Veterans Days weekend for a bowhunting camp.  Matt’s background is in exercise science and shares the importance of specificity training for what you do.  For example, the three of us are saddle hunters so we share some important keep training techniques when it comes to getting into “saddle shape.”  Within this discussion two key words came to mind and we touched upon them and those words were “discipline” and “stress.”  We talk about how we need to work towards gaining discipline and decreasing our stress.  Overall, this episode we hope fires you up to set some goals for this upcoming season to improve in all facets in your life.  Be a better hunter, be better physically, mentally and as an overall individual.  Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Hey everyone, welcome to episode 138 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Mitch Shirk from the Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast.  Mitch resides in southeastern PA where he mainly hunts private land but as we discussed in this podcast Mitch shares his strategy for hunting public land as well.  The two of us get into a bunch of topics when it comes to whitetail hunting. We dive into key factors that a property needs to have to help manage deer, his approach to his past few hunting seasons, getting outside his comfort zone and his story on his 170” buck that was on a 2 acre wooded lot.  We wrap up the conversation by discussing what hunting PA means to us and his Pennsylvania Woodsman Podcast on the Sportsmen’s Empire.

To start things off in the podcast Mich briefly introduces who he is and we spend the first 15 minutes just having a fun bs session.  We then start talking a little bit about how running our podcasts have helped us over the last few years.  Mitch shares his thoughts on what a property needs to help manage deer.  For this aspect Mitch shares the importance of entry and exit routes.  We discuss the plans for the upcoming 2022 season here in PA.  This was a fun discussion because we both have full time jobs and shared how we plan on not blowing up our main areas when we can hunt if the wind doesn’t allow it.  I think a lot of people can relate to this aspect of the discussion.  Mitch shared his strategies for hunting a specific buck vs a general buck/deer. I asked Mitch how he goes about limiting his mistakes on his own property, his best of 2020 season in which he shot a 170” and the struggles of 2021.  Mitch shares the importance of gaining knowledge and intel by getting boots on the ground and getting outside his comfort zone.  Wrapping this episode up we chat about what hunting PA means to us.  Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Hey everyone, welcome to episode 137 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Rick Brule from Vapor Trail and Stokerized! Rick has been with Vapor Trail for over 10 years and he shares a little bit about himself and their companies. Rick talks about his upcoming Boundary Waters hunt and all the details regarding what he will be going after and when!  We asked Ricke about his whitetail hunting situation for this upcoming season and it was really interesting to hear the way Rick hunts the metro Minnesota areas. Right after that Rick dives into two different Pope and Young buck stories! Then we wrap things up by talking about some whitetail calling strategies and experiences.

To start things off in the podcast Rick briefly introduces who he is and what his role is with Vapor Trail and Stokerized.  Vapor Trail has been extremely busy this past year not only with products but with building their own pro shop in Minnesota!  Rick shares some information regarding their shop and what people in the area can expect when they go there! From actually selling products, hanging out, 40 yard range and Techno Hunt! Rick follows this up by talking about his upcoming season which includes a 2 week canoe trip in the Boundary Waters!  This is where he drew a limited bear tag but plans to fish, hunt whitetails and birds!  Really interesting to hear how he plans on attacking this trip and makes you want to go for the ride!  Following this conversation up we dove right into his two Pope & Young whitetail buck stories.  Both stories happen during the middle of November and hearing how he was able to overcome a bad shot on the biggest buck yet to date.  To finish off the episode Rick shares how his improved calling techniques has led to him getting more deer encounters and what he is doing. Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Antler Up!

On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Zach Ferenbaugh from The Hunting Public! Zach needs no introduction into the show and we got right into it from the start!  This was a really fun conversation with Zach because I had the opportunity to hang out with Zach this past July at a Tethrd Teach-N-Train Tour event in Iowa.  It was awesome to see him interact with people that attended the event and we had the chance to catch up afterwards.  Some of the topics in today’s episode were from that conversation and I knew I wanted Zach to come on and dive deeper into those for the listeners and have him pick up where he left off!

To start things off in the podcast Zach mentions briefly what his first hunt is going to be and where!  This then caused us to go down a rabbit hole of what gear adjustments he either already has made or will make for that trip and the rest of the season.  Those of you that have followed the podcast know I love talking to individuals about their gear!  After this topic Zach shares how his whitetail scouting philosophy has evolved over the last few years and what his objectives are!  I loved this part because Zach shares how to read sign correctly to hunt THAT sign NOW and not being married to a specific spot. He really goes deep into this topic and I personally took a lot away from this part and I believe you will too!  It truly was great to get this information out.  Some stories were shared as well that go along with this topic.  We wrap up the podcast with chatting about how to manage your mentality during the hunting season.  We all know those down times come during the season and Zach shares his thoughts on it and what he does to keep that positive mindset going during the season!   This was a total blast to record and I hope you like it!  Enjoy today’s episode & thanks for tuning in!! ANTLER UP!!

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 135 of the Antler Up Podcast!

On this week's episode I was joined by Marcus Smith from Black Ovis! Most of you know Black Ovis as your one stop shop when it comes to all things hunting gear like archery equipment, boots, clothing, backpacking gear and a ton more.  I had the opportunity to meet Marcus at this past year's ATA show in KY and knew I wanted to get him on the show.  Well better late than ever and I had a great time talking to Marcus about a few different topics when it comes to hunting and gear!

We start out this episode with Marcus sharing his background in marketing and how being a professional skier led him to his job with Black Ovis.  Marcus then talks about growing up chasing elk in UT and now his passion is bowhunting!  I love these stories because you can really hear it in his voice how much this means to him.  This episode wouldn’t be complete until we really got into talking about some gear.  With western hunting in full swing I asked Marcus what his must have pieces of gear and more! The last bit we discuss is how the new laws in UT regarding trail cameras and how the law has altered his strategy.  Enjoy today’s episode & thanks for tuning in!! ANTLER UP!!

Dimitri and I sat down with Rendell Erik from Iowa. If you have seen the Tethrd 10 this past year, you will notice today’s guest as this past year's winner. I had the privilege to meet and work an event this past summer with Erik and knew immediately we had to have him break down some whitetail strategy. For this episode Rendell breaks down his process on how he has been able to fill his tags on bucks scoring in the 170’s and how he goes after and plans to kill a buck over 200”. Love this chat and I believe no matter where you are located you can use these tactics when scouting, placing trailcam’s, and hunting bedding areas. So get that pen and pad ready and enjoy the episode. Enjoy today’s episode & thanks for tuning in!! Enjoy this fun episode! ANTLER UP!!
