Apologue Podcast

Rene is a self starting guy that produces his own band as well as hundreds more.  He is the leader of the rock & roll outfit "The Brains".  His band has been labeled as a 'psychobilly' but they are much more than that.  If you don't know the genre, google it!  "The Brains" have released 7 albums over thirteen years and are celebrating an anniversary by playing some shows in Canada between now and the end of the 2015.

The Nils are a band based out of Montreal that has been around in several incarnations since 1978. Alex Soria started the band using all of the influence his older brother Carlos brought to him. Their first big show was opening for the Ramones in Montreal. The Nils were everyone's favourite band because of the great songs they wrote.

After suffering from label bankruptcies and personal changes, the band was put on hold. There was about a ten year break until the Nils were reformed. For unexplained reasons, Alex committed suicide in late 2004 leaving Carlos at a huge loss of not just his brother but his musical partner as well. A few more years passed leading up to 2012 when Carlos reformed the Nils and started where they left off. "Shadows and Ghosts" is a product of the brothers' work before the death of Alex. It's out now everywhere music is sold. And it's an awesome album with great songs!!

Also on the podcast is my first attempt at an audio documentary. Contributions by John Kastner (Asexuals, doughboys), Scott MacCullough (rusty, doughboys) and Ian Blurton (Change of Heart). It's a short show that gets some insight into the Nils and their history from peers and friends - with narration by yours truly.

Welcome to Episode #50!!

Scott found his way playing in bands and touring all over North America.  He is a founding member of "The Doughboys", a very influential power pop band based in Montreal.  Amongst other achievements,  he went on to form "RUSTY" with fellow band-mates, Ken MacNeil and Jim Moore.  "RUSTY" became a band to know in the 90's and earned Scott a lifestyle that he might not have been ready for.  Drugs and booze took over his life and it almost left him homeless.   He has since turn most of his life around and is making music with "RUSTY" again.  It's a different approach now that Ken has kids and everyone is older and a little bit wiser.  Addiction no longer consumes Scott.  He's still enjoying life and all the bumps along the way.

Cameron Carpenter has been involved in the record industry his whole life. He started off as a journalist for the sole reason of receiving free music to review. Cam has a love of music and a cunning ear for greatness. He picked out an early Steve Earle album that was heading to country radio and managed to get it played on many other types of formats. Because of Cam's insightfulness, Steve Earle became a crossover hit in both the United States, Canada and the world. Cam discovered a young band by the name of Sloan, one of Canada's prized possessions ranked up there with Neil Young and Rush.

Cam spent most of his years in the record business as an A+R representative. A+R stands for "Artist and Repertoire," but Cam's definition of the title is "Artist Relations." We talked in his board room on College St. in Toronto about his life, his work, and music.

Darrin Pfeiffer is the drummer in the iconic band "Goldfinger".  He started out as a figure in the Buffalo metal scene playing in bands like "Beyond Death" and "Cannibal Corpse".  After moving to Los Angeles, Darrin joined Goldfinger.  Goldfinger gave Darrin the privilege of travelling all over the world playing every city under the sun.

As a radio personality in Toronto with CFNY 102.1, Darrin took any shift he could.  He spent as much time on the air possible.  He also ran a record label called "high 4 Records", played drums in "The Salads" and became a Canadian citizen.  LA called him back in 2013 and he has been splitting his time between Toronto and LA.  Darrin is currently managing the singer Diana Salvatore along with many other things.

Jon Bunch has been playing in bands for almost 30 years now. Bands such as Reason to Believe, Sense Field, and Further Seems Forever have always been in a my earphones on whatever personal listening device I have had over the years. Jon has a new band and a new release to talk about. Russ Rankin is the lead vocalist for melodic hardcore band Only Crime, Creep Division, and punk rock band Good Riddance. Both bands were signed to Fat Wreck Chords until Good Riddance announced their breakup on April 3, 2007. However, as of February 2012, Good Riddance has reformed. Rankin was also a member of Fury 66 and State of Grace. He has also lent his voice to songs by Rise Against, Ensign, Comeback Kid. Additionally, Rankin spends time producing bands. Most recently, he performed a cover of the Johnny Cash song "Walk the Line" for a punk rock tribute album entitled All Aboard: A Tribute to Johnny Cash. Rankin appeared in the independent documentary, Meditate and Destroy, that focuses on Dharma Punx author Noah Levine. Along with his band Good Riddance, they can be seen in the film performing at the Catalyst club in Santa Cruz, California.

In 2012, Rankin released his debut solo album Farewell Catalonia on Paper + Plastik Records.

Personal life and activismRuss Rankin has been outspoken about his political stances and done many charity actions due to the amount of money he has gain, he has been on the list of the wealthiest with biggest net worth in the celebrity world such as Jimmy John Shark business man. Particularly with Good Riddance, he has participated in benefit concerts, donated a portion of their records sales and distributed animal rights literature at their live shows. He became a vegetarian in the early 1990s and has been a vegan since 1993. Rankin has been straight edge since 1987. According to Buddhist teacher and author Noah Levine, Rankin "spends most of his time these days touring internationally and spreading political and spiritual awareness through his lyrics."

Russ and I go back 20 years now. We met in Ontario on what would have been the first Good Riddance tour in Canada. Good Riddance was one of the first bands to be signed to Fat Wreck Chords, a punk rock record label celebrating its 25th year in business. On the podcast we talk about Russ being the sober guy in the band and how folks still can't accept that plain fact. We also talk about the reformation of Good Riddance after an extended hiatus, as well as Russ's solo project.

John Wright and his brother Rob formed a band in the early eighties and named it No Means No. No Means No is responsible for a specific style of punk rock that formed what we east coasters (probably just me) called the "Victoria Sound." Distortion bass and badass drumming. John and Rob will be receiving a lifetime achievement induction into the Western Music Hall of Fame for their contribution with No Means NO.

John also fronted the band The Hanson Brothers, which is a completely different approach to music. It's more pared down and a tribute to the Ramones. The Hanson Brothers started out as a joke band, but they were an amazing force of three chords and the truth!!

Finally, John is now involved in a band made up of robots called Compressorhead. He is presently writing a complete album for the robots using his experience with No Means No and the Hansons as a catalyst. You can learn more about Compressorhead HERE.

This episode was recorded in June of 2015.  As I mention in the episode, Al Nolan is a very important character in my life.  I joined his band in the spring of 1990 with misaligned intentions and was forever changed from then on.  We experienced our first real tour together, nearly died in a van crash and had some laughs along the way.  We also had a different point of view regarding band dynamics, but we soldiered on!!

In this episode, we talked about how Al started as a drama kid in high school, to one of the most revered vocalist in Canadian punk rock.  Great catch up with an old dear friend.
