It’s been three years since I escaped financial abuse and it’s no wonder why enduring years of that can debilitate and confuse. I think Armenians spend less time on full disclosure and truth bearing in financials than they should. It’s a long time coming, but I broke through those shackles when I stood in my truth last week. We (our sisters in artsahk) are being plundered again by the barbaric Azeri Turk. This time, a mother and child were killed with bombs and chaos of random raids. This is intentional and continued female abuse by a third party. We need to keep them in our hearts and prayers for a peaceful outcome. Attacking our countries fertility isn’t ok!

Let’s face it! Emotional and financial abuse hurt our mental health and it takes some time to heal from that. That level of abuse takes a toll on us to the point that making decisions is taxing and hard. I was finally able to bring myself to buy a car without fear, three years post abuse. It’s not easy and add that to other outside health issues and your current levels of protection and you’ve got quite the pickle to contend with.

My son went to his grandmas to cook sarma, and instead of celebrating this, she shamed him. She laughed and said something like, “what are you becoming, a girl or something?” In Armenian. This sort of thing happens more often than we think and it has a lasting effect on our youth if not careful. We need to move into the 21st century and encourage all of our children’s talents and interests no matter what gender they identify with. I’m tired of seeing the old world ways perpetuated in regard to sexism. If we want Armenians to flourish and live long, we need to keep our youth interested in a culture that’s nonjudgmental and prejudice.

When we stand in our truth, we know when it’s time to go and sever toxic ties. Armenians have a tendency to stay too long with their abusers because it’s seen as being “amot” if they don’t, and that’s just further shaming of us. I’m guilty of that too, and I want you to know that it’s going to be the ultimate demise of the Armenian community when we continue to burn the very fabric that which holds us together. Let’s preserve our wonderful heritage with a healthy mental outlook on life and start treating the Armenian woman better!
