  • Daniel Jose Older Releases The Book Last Canto Of The Dead

    To

the mortal world—at least, to most people in Brooklyn—Mateo Matisse and
Chela Hidalgo are simply two teenagers in love. Mateo is a brilliant
pianist, but he’s also a typical, chaotic guy. And Chela, the short,
fierce girl he met while playing piano at her bat mitzvah, is a terrific
dancer and a terrible singer, who doesn’t get shook by bullies. As
teenagers, the way they fell in love was dramatic. But their love for
each other goes back centuries—and not only poetically speaking. Mateo
and Chela were once spirits, just spirits. At some point, Galanika the
Healer became one with the boy Mateo. Chela’s goddess roots are even
more complicated—she’s part Okanla the Destroyer and part Madrigal the
Creator. Imagine experiencing the thrill and angst of first love while
grappling with confounding divine powers and serious godly
    responsibilities. And oh, battling demons.

In LAST CANTO OF THE DEAD, award-winning author Daniel José Older continues the story of Mateo and Chela that began in BALLAD & DAGGER.

In Book One of the Outlaw Saints duology, our young couple of very old
souls pulled off the incredible feat of raising their once-sunken native
island of San Madrigal—a vibrant, multicultural homeland to both Cuban
Santeros and Sephardic Jews—from the sea and saving their Brooklyn
diaspora community from the wrath of an ancient enemy. In Book Two, the
culmination to their epic story, Mateo and Chela are faced with saving
San Madrigal from an army of demons in the thrall of a 200-year-old
maniac named Archibaldo, who happens to be Mateo’s ancestor. Meanwhile
back in Brooklyn, their beloved neighborhood is being threatened by
hideous creatures best described as bambarúto, or bogeyman in Ladino, and the fear is dividing the once tight-knit community, with the two sides at each other’s throats.

  • The Daily Mess Faith In A Smile

    June 21, 2023

A very good friend once suggested that I attempt to

share inner core thoughts without identifying all things being a connection to
religion.  He explained “Some of us aren’t
on the same page.  To hear others speak
like it’s the only thing you have sounds like fingernails scratching a
chalkboard.” I can’t tell you how many times HR hauled me into their office to
remind me to keep these uplifting thoughts to myself.  Coworkers accused me of crossing the
line.  Through awareness and prayer my
heart evolved into smiles.  Not saying
    anything is just as empowering.

  • The Lyrics From Billys Forest Chapter 337

Not sure why I'm being called to this. It stems from a conversation shared with a church pastor several years ago. He said, "If Christ were to come back right now, he'd be injured by how we gather and celebrate his worst day." Meaning the crucifixion. I sit in this forest today. 45 degrees. The leaves turning bright yellow, burnt reds and oranges. When we fall witness to the beauty of fall, we are in celebration of death. Little things like this get into my heart. There are so many stories wrapped around us at all times. Stopping to think about what we celebrate is a deeper look into a greater more powerful message.

  • Arthur Smith Releases Reach Hard Lessons Learned, Truths From A Lifetime In Television

    Blackstone Publishing is

thrilled to announce the forthcoming release of Critics Choice award
winning producer known for creating some of the longest-running
unscripted series in history Arthur Smith's book, REACH: HARD LESSONS
    AND LEARNED
TRUTHS FROM A LIFETIME IN TELEVISION.

    One of the most daring,

creative, and influential minds in nonfiction television, Arthur Smith
draws on the most exciting moments of his pioneering career as a
producer to show how far you can go when you reach for your dreams.

    Arthur Smith is famous for

his innovation and audacity, and as the man behind some of the
longest-running unscripted series in television history. His
    groundbreaking hit Hell's
Kitchen forged the modern food competition reality genre, while his Emmy-nominated American
Ninja Warrior has spawned a cultural movement, with Ninja-inspired gyms in every major American city.

    In Reach,

Smith shares adventures, triumphs, and hard-won lessons from his
astonishing career, beginning with his unprecedented ascension
from the ranks of sports production to become the youngest-ever head of
CBC Sports. Never one to rest on his laurels, Smith moved from Canada
to the United States to produce a wide variety of entertainment
programming with his mentor, television icon Dick
Clark. Years later, he spearheaded an entirely new approach to sports
television at FOX Sports Net, helping to grow the fledgling business
into a true industry powerhouse. In 2000, Smith made the biggest reach
of his career with the launch of A. Smith & Co.
Productions, which has produced over two hundred television shows on
more than fifty networks. Across genres, formats, and platforms, Smith
and his A. Smith & Co. team have earned a reputation for original,
emotional, buzz-worthy, and deeply personal storytelling.

    In these pages, Smith

takes us behind-the-scenes of dozens of pivotal moments in sports and
television history, ranging from the high-intensity control room at the
Olympics to the development of The Titan Games with Dwyane ("The Rock")
Johnson. We learn about a show that never was with Donald Trump, as
well as a super-far-fetched idea that became the bizarro-classic
    genre-buster I Survived a Japanese
Game Show. Through winning anecdotes involving a disparate cast of
famous characters, including Marlon Brando, Gordon Ramsay, Magic
Johnson, Little Richard, Wayne Gretzky, Simon Cowell, and Microsoft
cofounder Paul Allen, Smith illustrates just how far
you can go when you work hard, take risks, and reach for your dreams.

  • The Daily Mess Shaped By Super Heroes

    June 20, 2023

Why are there so many super hero televisions shows and movies? Experts

claim it fulfills a human need.  Which
has been intensified by present day writers and storytellers who’ve creatively
opened a giant variety of universes that connect so many super heroes together.
Also adding to this need is CGI technology.
    It invites a broader audience.
Something that started in the 1930’s set the tone by creating an
    embodiment of reassurance.
