The German pianist has built a series based on four large-scale variations by Bach, Beethoven, Stevenson and Rzewski. With researcher and presenter Katy Hamilton, he explores his "most beloved" musical form, the politics within the works, and how he first discovered, struggled with, and finally came to master the seemingly insurmountable Variations on 'The People United' by his friend, Frederic Rzewski.
