J. W. (Terry) Freiberg has a Ph.D. from UCLA and a Harvard law degree. For 30 years he lawyered for many of Boston’s child social welfare and adoption agencies and scores of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers. His dual training made him the go-to attorney when legal questions came up in clinical therapy. He worked at the crossroads of law and psychiatry.
Terry is the author of five books, including the one we talk about in this episode - Four Seasons of Loneliness - and argues that loneliness is a sensation, not an emotion. It's like hunger or thirst.
We talk about that idea and a few others.

In this episode I talk with Elliott Katz. After he went through a divorce, he set out to understand what it means to be a man in a relationship. He found a lot of other men were asking the same questions he was, and they all struggled to find good ideas and useful information.
He finally found answers in some of the oldest notions about being a man and shares those insights in his latest book Being the Strong Man A Woman Wants: Timeless wisdom on being a man. The ideas in this book can help you build a stronger marriage and a stronger love relationship. It is even available in 24 languages.
Elliott's ideas seemed counterintuitive to me, but I found out how right he actually is. Even my wife thinks he is right. We got talking out of the gate so let's pick it up on the fly.

Stoicism has been around since the 3rd century BCE and my next guest, Matt Van Natta, has been studying Stoic philosophy for almost that long. In case you missed it the first time around, some famous stoics of the distant past include Marcus Aurelius (a roman emperor), Epictetus, Seneca the Younger, and who could forget Zeno of Citium?
Matt is the creator of the podcast Good Fortune and the blog Immoderate Stoic. His podcasts and writings focus on how to apply stoicism in the modern world. He writes books, drinks coffee, beer, and whiskey, and contemplates the human condition.
In this episode we talk about stoicism in the modern world and his new book - The Beginners Guide to Stoicism: Tools for Emotional Resilience and Positivity. The stoics managed life pretty well and this book describes lots of great life navigation tools you can use right now.
