goodbye/fun facts....national spumoni day...Italian ice cream treat that incorporates cream, fruit, and nuts..similar to neopolitan ice cream...spumoni is three molded layers of flavored gelato.  According to a Chicago Tribune article from July 4, 1979, a “genuine spumoni” recipe was brought to the United States from Nola, Italy in 1905...traditional recipe called for three layers of semifreddo – an almond layer, semisweet chocolate, and stracciatella....Stracciatella is a type of gelato with irregular bits of chocolate in it.  However, around the United States, most spumoni will include a cherry layer with cherry bits, a layer of pistachio ice cream, and a layer of chocolate

In the early 1930s, Mexican vaqueros in Southwest Texas developed fajitas using throwaway cuts of beef.  The fajita quickly became a destination food in the culinary world.  now they're made with shrimp, lean chicken, or pork....there are even vegetarian and vegan option.  In Spanish, fajita is a diminutive for “faja”, which translates to “belt” or “girdle”....because the meat used was strip steak. by 1971 the word “fajita” used to define the dish officially appears in the Oxford English Dictionary.

For example, the invasion of Normandy during World War II might have gone the wrong way and cost thousands more lives, if not for Allied soldiers dropping from aircraft behind enemy lines.  From the first American use of paratroopers on August 16, 1942 to the 101st “Screaming Eagles,” airborne divisions are some of our best and bravest. paratroopers now jumping out of an aircraft at the rate of about 118.5 feet per second...so this day is also a time to recognize the vigorous training of airborne units in the Army.

goodbye/fun facts....National Lemon Meringue Pie Day.  Lemons provide so much flavor to life with all of their culinary applications: cookies,cakes, lemon bars, lemonade and even savory dishes.  Lemon meringue pie is amongst the best lemon desserts. The golden shortbread pastry crust, savory lemon curd filling, and velvety meringue topping.  Lemon-based pies, puddings, and custards have been around since the Middle Ages, according to history...but it wasn't until the 1700s that the innovative addition of putting meringue on top of the pie was adopted....but it really didn't take off until Elizabeth Goodfellow, the proprietor of a Philadelphia pastry business...who was charge of the first cooking school in the United States... is credited with inventing the lemon meringue pie.

goodbye/fun facts....National Creamsicle Day celebrates the creamy citrus dessert on a stick...during the height of summer.  “Creamsicle” is the brand name of an ice cream treat. It consists of vanilla ice cream on a Popsicle stick with an outer coating of sherbert....which is different than a 'dreamsicle".  Many people use these terms interchangeably, however, the original definition of a Creamsicle is a treat made with ice cream whereas a Dreamsicle is made with milk. While many other flavors now exist, the original flavor was orange.  Today, the Creamsicle is a brand owned by Good Humor, a subsidiary of Unilever. Famous flavors besides the orange Creamsicle are cherry, grape, lime, blue raspberry, and blueberry.

goodbye/fun facts....National Face Mask Day...and this year it falls on a friday...so take this gentle reminder  to reserve at least 15 to 20 minutes of our day to show some love to our skin...and all thanks to Madam Rowley who, in 1875,  patents the first facial mask. it was called a toilet mask and is what's known today as a 'sheet mask'...and hers were to be worn all night "for freckles or fugitive discolorations and for clogged pores and capillary congestion", today...you can buy a face mask or a mask sheet just about anywhere these days...or if you want to go natural, you can prepare a mask at home using ingredients from your kitchen, such as honey, almond butter, and egg whites. A mask can soothe, scrub, and cleanse the skin simultaneously.

goodbye/fun facts....National Mochi Day pays tribute to those glutinous orbs of steamed rice flour.  This traditional Japanese food now comes in different types and sizes and flavor profiles but it's humble beginnings started in ancient history...14,000 B.C..In the Heian period (794 to 1185), mochi was used and eaten in ceremonial events, ‘shinto,’ such as marriage and childbirth, and became a traditional Japanese New Year treat.  in 1993 Frances Hashimoto, a Japanese-American businesswoman, invents the mochi ice cream, which becomes incredibly popular in the United States. and you can watch youtube videos on the making of mochi...truly fascinating!
