goodbye/fun facts....national mango day...Mango is a yellow toned summer stone fruit that grows on a tropical tree that can grow up to 150 feet tall and can have an extremely long life span.  Mangos, growing from the tree’s flowers, can take four to five months to fully ripen...he mango fruit was brought to Portugal and Britain by traders and colonizers from south asia. Mangoes are extremely versatile. They go well in sweet dishes as well as savory ones. You can crush them up to make ice popsicles or mango puree, or you can cut them into cubes to have in your leafy salads.

goodbye/fun facts....National Lollipop Day...or suckers or lolly, or sticky pops are made of flavored sucrose, water, and corn syrup that are hardened on a stick.  Lollipops have been around in some form or another since forever. In prehistoric times, cavemen would collect honey from beehives using a stick.  With the surplus of sugar in the 17th century, the English started the trend of preparing boiled sugar candy on sticks. But it is George Smith, owner of the confectionery company Bradley Smith Company, who is credited for creating the modern lollipop that we all enjoy today. He started making them in 1908 and trademarked the word ‘lollipop’ in 1931. today there are over 100 varieties of lollipops available today in all shapes and sizes.  (ashley loves the "original gourmet" in bubble gum flavor

goodbye/fun facts....National Urban Beekeeping Day or aka backyard beekeeping day...celebrates the practice of keeping bee colonies in urban areas.  Apiculture refers to the practice of keeping and maintaining bees. there was a time it was prohibited to keep bees in urban areas, but recent discoveries show that bees kept in the city are healthier than those kept in the country. One of the challenges of urban beekeeping was swarming. While it is harmless, (unless you agitate or destroy the hive) the sight of a swarming colony of bees is enough to scare people away....but bees are vital to human existance. just know it is now mandatory to register beehives with city management...

goodbye/fun facts....Coral Reef Awareness Week...Coral reefs are one of the most diverse and important elements of the earth’s ecosystem.  they are built by tiny individual coral polyps held together by calcium carbonate....they occupy less than 0.1% of the world’s ocean area however at least 25% of all marine species call coral reefs home. They look like a plant, but coral reefs are considered animals—they are invertebrates like jellyfish and sea anemones.  Coral reef structures help slow down and shrink waves as they hurtle towards shore, which helps protect coastlines from hurricanes, cyclones and tsunamis. Coral reefs are incredibly fascinating!! there are several documentaries like 'chasing coral' and 'the perfect coral reef' on youtube and the national geographic channel

goodbye/fun facts....national tape measure day...Though we humans have been measuring for centuries, the more modern form of the ruler came in the 1800s, starting with the rudimentary steel tape measure created in 1821 by James Chesterman. Chesterman, a craftsman from Sheffield, England, worked in the fashion business and created long steel tape measures as an accidental byproduct of the metal hoops he made that were inside popular dress skirts.  Hoping to make a bit more money by selling them off to surveyors, Chesterman lined the tapes with graduated markers and sold them as the lightweight, compact ‘Steel Band Measuring Chains.’ ...but they were expensive!!  at $17 in 1853, it was equivalent to $300 in today’s U.S. dollars. in 1869...the tape measure created by Chesterman was later improved upon by Alvin J. Fellows, an inventor from the United States who patented the first spring measuring tap.

goodbye/fun facts....barbershop music — a style of voice-only, acapella-style music — this day is not to be confused with another barbershop-themed event: National Barbershop Quartet Day.  Barbershop music may have originated in England in the 1600s and has since grown in popularity.  By the 1830s, this music had found its way to America, and as the local barbershops were the preferred haunts for local men...African American culture took this style of music to another level..singing folk songs and hymns  in four parts, leading to the barbershop music’s distinctive style...and the oversized mustaches, striped jackets, and straw hats linked to this style of music came from an old form of theater entertainment called Vaudeville

goodbye/fun facts....National Rainier Cherry Day...here are some 1,000 varieties of cherries but today recognizes the cherry variety named after Mount Rainier. In 1952, Harry Fogle of Washington State University developed the Rainier cherry by cross-breeding the Bing and Van cherry varieties. Rainier cherries are golden yellow cherries with a red blush tone.  they have a high sugar content and are classified as premium fruits and are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and potassium.  they are so delicious that each season, birds eat almost one-third of the crop...so growers have to cover the trees in nets and plant them between red cherry trees to encourage the bees to pollinate the blossoms.  grow for only two months every year and need to be hand picked...so all of these these combined make them "premium" and a bit more expensive...
