In today's episode of Asia Tech Podcast we introduce the ATP Power Rankings for 2017. Here's why we're creating the Power Rankings now:
    - The Asian startup ecosystem has grown so fast in the last 5 years, we need to build a map of who's who
    - We want to showcase the best in the ecosystem so people can learn through example
    - Here's a chance to help our network get some publicity
    - It's a bit of fun, so why not?
The challenge facing a rapidly expanding startup tech ecosystem like the one here in Asia is that it's difficult to get a mental map of who's doing what and how everything relates to each other. That's why we want to identify the key influencers - both individuals and organizations - that are making a significant difference. The ATP Power Rankings 2017 covers the following categories:
    Individual founder/investor/stakeholder
    1) VC fund
    2) Startup City
    3) Startup Event
    4) Coworking Space
    5) Media
Our goal with the ATP Power Rankings is to recognize and celebrate those people who have helped grow this ecosystem in 2017. Sometimes they aren't the most well-known names, the natural self-promoters, that's why awards are a great way to give people the credit they deserve in a world where everything changes at breakneck speed. The ATP Power Rankings is an open vote available to everyone with a Linkedin account - accessible through the link below. You can vote and nominate new names all the way up to Dec 31st 2017, after which we'll award the best in each category.

Guy Hearn and I had an interesting conversation about the modernization of the advertising business. How has technology both helped and hurt the ad business? What is the efficacy and measurability of online campaigns? How do clients and brands perceive the onset and ubiquity of math and computer science specialists as opposed to general researchers? We also talked about how technology allows the barriers to entry to drop for entry into both the content creation and advertising businesses.

His experience as an asset manager, investment portfolio builder and advisor lead to his joining and leading the Bangkok Venture Club. The Club aims to aggregate the experience of many local business builders and angel investors into a platform that invests in seed stage businesses and provide real value to those businesses by using the accumulated network of the Club's members. We touched on a range of relevant topics in the investment space, including the impact of corporate venture capitalists like SCB's Digital Ventures, SCG's AddVentures and the accelerators of the mobile operators in Thailand. How will these actors work together with newer investors like K2 and BVC locally and the other regional micro funds. We also spent a bit of time talking about blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Finally, we touched on how to monetize these investments via trade sales, listings and other sources of liquidity.

Welcome Michael Ang to Asia Tech Podcast. Michael's career started as a financial trader and moved into data services with Thomson Reuters...only to move back into the financial world with firms like DBS in Singapore. With the ones of logistics and e-commerce in the region, Michael took all of his finance and data analysis experience and helped build out logistics and supply chain management for Anchanto, one of the service providers in Southeast Asia that competes in the e-commerce facilitation space. Michael had some interesting views and perspectives on what makes last mile delivery expensive in Singapore and how data can be used to make multi and omni-channel e-commerce more efficient.

Produced by Pikkal & Co - Award Winning Podcast Agency.
Really looking forward to introducing you to my next guest, Matt Foley, founder and MD of Pikohana. Matt's had a long career in the Asian tech industry from helping build out the Taiwanese internet in 1996 to being involved in IPOs, to living and working in China, South Korea, Hong Kong and now Singapore. Matt's Foley family motto which he recently discoveed in Ireland is "that I may be of use", a maxim that only makes sense when you couple that service with risk. Matt's story is one of constantly seeking how to be of use as a CFO by stepping outside his comfort zone and embracing new challenges - whether that was leaving the US in the midst of the 90s dot com boom to seek adventure in Asia or starting his own business at Pikohana. This is an interesting look into the motivations that compel someone to take on challenges in the face of failure, a conversation that also touches on Matt's unique story from being part of a nuclear weapons team at the Soviet frontline to giving up 8 handicap golf to learn surfing.

Today our mission is to understand the Chinese market and the Chinese customer a little better. What better way of doing that than going to Shanghai and talking to a man from France? Not being trite, my point is that often the best way to understand a market is to come from the outside. So, joining us today for ATP Stories is an entrepreneur who has spent the last 20 years of his career coming from the outside, Gregory Prudhommeaux. We're going to talk about entering the Chinese market, the importance of WeChat and how the Chinese market is changing even within the last 12 months.
