People who call themselves "Asians" and "Americans" have usurped words that have a much broader definition than the one most people use today.

Here are some ideas:

American => Gringo or Yank(ee)

Asian => East Asian

Or let East Asians keep "Asian" as their term and then we refer to things from Asia as "Oriental" (Asia used to be called "the Orient").
