Dr. Matt Kutz is professor in the athletic training program but does so much beyond that. Dr. Kutz is on the forefront of research and development when it comes to leadership in not only athletic training, but organizations in general. Dr. Kutz has put out many great articles focusing on leadership in athletic training and we get into the details of how that all got started and where it has taken him in his career. The story is amazing and shows just how far the skillset and knowledge of athletic trainers can go.
Dr. Nikki Harris is a professor with the AT Still DAT Program and spends a lot of her time in service to the athletic training profession. In this episode we discuss how the NATA Career Advancement Committee came to be and how that plays into the young professional’s world of athletic training. As a compliment to being the chair of that committee, Dr. Harris also is on the NATA AT Compensation Task Force, focusing on Education to help better understand what ATs can do to help with compensation.
Dr. Natasha Denmark is an athletic trainer who is currently not working in a traditional setting and has done a lot of different things in her career and we try and cover it all. Natasha teaches sports medicine at the junior college level, which isn’t going on to be a CAATE accredited program but she describes how this course work can help assist people into the right school route to fulfill their career. We also talk about her work in her dissertation and the way the DEI has played a huge role in her life and she shares her story of coming to the US and it is powerful.
Understanding what your users and customers need is important. It is the most important thing for President of Mueller Sports Medicine, John Cayer. We had the opportunity to sit down with John when we took our trip down to Mueller several weeks ago. John doesn’t have a traditional background in athletic training and sports medicine and has had an interesting journey to getting to where he is currently. John gives us all the background on how he ended up where he is today.
Andrea is an athletic trainer in the secondary setting where she has spent most of her career. Throughout her time she has been typically working with a co-worker but recently has been working as a solo AT. Being a solo AT definitely can put you on an island and bring with it an array of potential challenges. In this type of setting it can also be hard to demonstrate leadership and lead from that position.
Mark Husen is an athletic trainer for Bellin Health in the Green Bay WI area and a recently inducted member of the Wisconsin Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame. He has done a lot in his career, which we get into, but has always had a huge focus on cardiac care and the access to AEDs. He shares a personal story about the importance of AED accessibility and why it has been a passion of his to these invaluable resources plentiful wherever he can. He also discusses a $100,000 initiative with the Green Bay Packers to help meet this need.
We also discuss relationships within the athletic training profession. Mark highlights why they have been so important in his career and why he focuses on it so much with not only his own career but with other athletic trainers that he interacts with. This episode has a ton to take away and we really enjoyed talking to Mark. Please enjoy this episode.

Meghan Johnson is an athletic trainer that has also finished up her masters degree in clinical mental health counseling. In her last episode with us Meghan was finishing up her softball career while also being a certified athletic trainer (Ep. 80). Currently Meghan is working as an athletic trainer in the secondary setting while also doing some mental health counseling during her off hours.
In this episode we talk about Meghan has been up to and we getting into the depths of what she has been working on helping out with mental health in athletics. Meghan talks about the mental health screening that she developed in her graduate work (linked on the show page) and how she has worked to set up resources for people that may test high on that screen. Mental health will continue to become a much bigger discussion in athletics and this is a great episode to find some resources to help you address the need in your setting.
