Racism is wrong. Hate can’t be accepted. Just not being “racist” is not enough to propel change. In order to help create change, we have to listen, work to comprehend and accept the fact that those in privileged positions can never understand what diverse people go through.   

ATChat hasn’t put a statement out because we needed to listen and learn from people that experience racism on potentially daily basis. We denounce any form or racism or hate, not only within the athletic training community but in the world in general. We will do more to help be part of the change that is needed to increase equality and work with our diverse professionals to succeed and feel safe while doing so.  

This roundtable discussion on Race in Athletic Training is a starting point and we can’t think Krystal, Ryan, Mercedes, Andrew, Brandon, Susan, Mike and Austin for being a part of the conversation and education. We held this roundtable to listen, learn, and find opportunities to try and make things better.   #blacklivesmatter, racism and hate are still a problem. Dr. Breitbach has done a lot in his career and worked in many different settings prior to moving into academics. From there he has been a program director and now works as a vice dean and professor and his research focuses on interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Dr. Breitbach has been deeply involved with this area of research and education through the courses he teaches at Saint Louis University.

In this episode we discuss what interprofessional education and collaborative practice are and how they can be applied to athletic training and building a healthcare team. As we have seen in my instances, a team is what can make a difference and help provide the highest level of care to the patients they serve. Tommy is an industrial athletic trainer and injury prevention specialist. In this episode we discuss what exactly an injury prevention specialist is and how it compares to the industrial athletic trainer. There can be a lot of nuance in what you can and cannot do under each title and how each one allows you to practice within the full scope of your training. Tommy shares how OSHA plays into the management of each case and scenarios and where an athletic trainer can focus their skills when it comes helping the patients they care for.

COVID-19 has impacted everyone’s life in one way or another. You may have gotten sick, you may have not had symptoms, you may know people that had to fight for their life and others that unfortunately may have lost theirs in the pandemic. Different people responded differently to the infection and some are still dealing with issues associated with their COVID infection. This is Long COVID. There is a lot we still don’t know about the post-viral condition but there is also a lot of work being done to try and figure it out and help people with it recovery as their body allows.

In this episode we discuss with Dr. Daria Oller about what Long COVID really is and how the group Long COVID Physio has been going about trying to answer questions and provide recommendations to help people. We discuss return to play considerations and if there is a correct one and also where to start with someone. We also discuss other medical conditions that have come up and if we can ever know if they are tied to Long COVID or not. Jen Xu is a minimalist shoe enthusiast in addition to everything else she has going on. Jen is currently a PhD student at the University of Virginia, doing stand up comedy, taking care of a new puppy and writing on Medium. This discussion came up when Jen posted about the importance of the details and nuance that come with moving into minimalist shoes. This idea grew into the conversation we had about the importance of nuance in everything athletic training.
