  • REPLAY: Ep. 85: Dr. Nikki Harris-#DATLife

REPLAY: Hear from Dr. Harris about advancing the profession and the importance of the DAT and its role in athletic training education.

Dr. Nikki Harris is a professor with the AT Still DAT Program and spends a lot of her time in service to the athletic training profession. In this episode we discuss how the NATA Career Advancement Committee came to be and how that plays into the young professional’s world of athletic training. As a compliment to being the chair of that committee, Dr. Harris also is on the NATA AT Compensation Task Force, focusing on Education to help better understand what ATs can do to help with compensation.

Needless to say, Dr. Harris is busy but as you can see from this episode, loves working as an AT and also spending her time in service to the profession. Lots of good information to take away in this episode and we learned a lot on what is happening at the national level. Enjoy.

  • REPLAY: Ep. 56: Susan Taah-Black in the Ivory and Being an AdvocATe

In this REPLAY hear Susan talk about diversity in AT and being an AdvocATe.

Susan Taah is an industrial athletic trainer among the many other things she does, seriously, it is impressive. In this episode we discuss more topics around race in athletic training and beyond. We discuss #blackintheivory and what many people of color go through in the higher education system. Eye opening and some deep reflection is warranted.   We also discuss microaggresions. A topic that can be polarizing but is something that is needed to be discussed and considered, especially by those in places of privilege. So many seemingly ‘small things’ that can have such a deep impact on so many, it has to be recognized.

We also discuss the industrial setting and how much of an impact athletic trainers can have in this setting. Susan is making things happen and doing so in a data driven, evidence influenced way to help advocate for what she is doing and how she can add value to the company she is working for. Great insight.  Please enjoy this episode.

  • REPLAY: Ep. 74: Rob Dicks-Mentorship & Multi-Tasking

In this REPLAY, listen to Rob talk about the importance of mentorship and how he multi-tasks all of his different responsibilities.

Rob Dicks does just a little bit of about everything. Not only does Rob wear multiple hats as an athletic trainer, he goes beyond that with administrative duties, community volunteering and his mentorship.  In this episode we talk about two major topics that all athletic trainers probably have a connection to. The first one is mentoring and mentorship. Rob has a unique place in his mentorship roles and how many people that he provides a listening ear to and guidance when they need it. Rob also flips mentorship on its head and is very aware about what he can learn from younger professionals and the importance of staying open to that possibility.

The other main area we discuss is multi-taking, a cornerstone of every athletic trainers professional life. Rob is extremely busy and it can be easy to let one area of life bleed into another. Rob discusses how he approaches handling all the responsibilities placed on him. Rob discusses some great insight and takeaways to try and implement to help juggle all responsibilities.

Mercedes Himmons is an athletic training and was one of our guests on the “Race in Athletic Training” episode. Mercedes provides unique and fantastic insight into race in the profession and her own interactions with it. We discuss inclusivity in the profession and how it is so important in the profession. Asking questions, listening and trying to comprehend what others go through is so important.

We also get in depth into the thesis that Mercedes’s is finishing up on and about to defend. To say it is the start of something impactful would be a complete understatement.  This was a great conversation and there is a lot to take away. Enjoy.
