Ed Wozniakwicz has been an athletic trainer for just about 10 years. He is also a listener to the podcast and thought that his experiences would bring a unique insight into our ATChat 5 questions. In this episode we sit down and talk with Ed on what he has learned over the past 10 years and what information he would want to pass down to young professionals if he were able to go back and have the information he does now. T
his was a unique episode because the host, Joel, is at the same point in his career and the comparisons of what has been learned was unique. A lot of great insights in this episode and some good lessons learned to help young professionals and all ATCs continue to move forward in their career and the profession.

Dr. Matt Kutz is professor in the athletic training program but does so much beyond that. Dr. Kutz is on the forefront of research and development when it comes to leadership in not only athletic training, but organizations in general. Dr. Kutz has put out many great articles focusing on leadership in athletic training and we get into the details of how that all got started and where it has taken him in his career. The story is amazing and shows just how far the skillset and knowledge of athletic trainers can go.
This conversation covers a lot when it comes to leadership in athletic training and why this has become such a focus for Dr. Kutz. You will hear about the importance of a specific aspect of Domain 5 and why Dr. Kutz thinks it is so important, not only within the profession of athletic training but helping the community understand what we our profession can do. We also spend time discussing Contextual Intelligence (Book: ) and how it plays into so many roles athletic trainers have in leadership, in the clinic and beyond. Lots of great information about this concept and how we all can apply it to life and work. Please enjoy this episode.

Dan Ruedeman is an AT that works in the Ortho Trauma department at a University of Colorado Hospital. Dan hasn’t had the most “normal” path to becoming an AT (includes taking the BOC exam 6 times) but has worked his way to this current role and doing so much to promote ATs in physician practice. In this episode we talk about all the unique aspects of physician practice that ATs can be of help with. Dan has a lot of unique insight and passion for this role and the impact it can have on different patient populations. If you’ve ever considered working in physician practice this is a great episode to listen to in order to get more information. I personally learned a lot from this episode and hope that you do as well.

Roles got reversed in this episode as Austin and Greg interview Joel. Joel has talked for more recently about the importance of looking at AT Services, not AT Servants and the importance of working “with” coaches and fellow administrators, not “for” them. This has been a shift that has been occurring over Joel’s last 4-5 years of practice in the profession. The shift in thinking began when Joel started leading a group of ATs and started to see the amount of service and hours being requested of them didn’t match the compensation, not even close.
The realization that while we can’t always control the salary we can control the hours to make that salary meaningful and allow time for a person to find alternative work. It also happened when changing the mindset to working “with” coaches and that while we are a service industry, professional courtesy can and should happen. Being adaptable is what ATs do, but that has to go both ways. Finally, we talk about ideas to help empower ATs moving forward and what research and education could be helpful. Enjoy.

Grady is an athletic trainer that currently works with middle school athletes. At the time of this recording he was writing a blog called “Youth Sports Reimagined”. Since then he has rebranded it to “4D Sports Medicine”. Everything in the conversation still applies, it is just happening under a different name.
In this episode we talk about how youth sports has been going through its own arms race and the detrimental impacts it has been having on some youth sports athletes. There is no quick fix for what youth sports have become and it will take many people to help restore it back to where athletes aren’t quitting at the age of 13. Hear some of the things that Grady has picked up in his education and experience working with these athletes. Check it out.

Ashley Peper is an athletic trainer in Waco Texas who works in the clinic but also does outreach to several small schools in the surrounding area. On top of these responsibilities she has also taken on the marketing efforts for the sports medicine team that she works with. Having no official marketing background it has been something new and that she has learned to do on the fly. In this episode we talk about what she has been doing when it comes to marketing, what has been most effective and things she thinks that any athletic trainer can try and put into their own practice to help market what they do.
Most athletic trainers aren’t formally trained in marketing but it is imperative to the profession that we continue to market ourselves, what we do and the value we provide. There are some great take aways from this episode that you can implement right away and help market yourself and/or your team. Enjoy.

In this episode we talk with Courtney Fernando’s who just finished up her masters work at the University of Toledo. While she was there she was part of an interesting research project named, ‘Project Chaos’. The name alone grabbed our attention and so we wanted to talk with Courtney about what the project was and how it can impact rehabilitation going forward.
The conversation was extremely interesting and there is a lot that this project attempted to take a look at. If you are listening to this, please check out the YouTube video for videos showing the actual testing. The preliminary results from this study take a look at how we can potentially better understand the return to sport process for athletes and how they respond in uncertain environments. This is a key aspect of the rehabilitation process and one that can be hard to mimic in a traditional rehabilitation setting.
This was a very interesting project and a great discussion on it, please enjoy.
