Ken Cieslak is a DC, AT but doesn’t necessarily use the skills in that order. In this episode we discuss how it came to be that Ken pursued a chiropractic degree while keeping his AT credential and then ultimately staying predominately in the AT profession in the SSAT. It definitely surprised us.
In this episode we talk about how he came to be dual credentialed and what that has meant to his career. We also discuss evidence based practice and what that means to him and how he employs it on a daily basis in his care of patients.
We also cover service in the athletic training profession and what that means and why it is so important to Ken. Needless to say we cover a lot of ground in this conversation and took a lot away from it. We hope you do too.

Di’kademe/: a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different.
Moving to one extreme or the other can be hard to balance, especially if you try and make two seemingly opposing views/perspectives try and mix together and champion both of them. This is where dichotomy comes from and the concept that you have to find balance. There are times to be aggressive but you have to be able to double back with caution because you can’t run yourself in only one direction and then immediately make a switch.
Recognizing and embracing the dichotomy of ideas is important to all professions but can have some serious implications in athletic training. It is important to recognize the wide range of differing ideas but also be able to balance those in order to be maximally effective. We discussing this episode.

Dr. Nikki Harris is a professor with the AT Still DAT Program and spends a lot of her time in service to the athletic training profession. In this episode we discuss how the NATA Career Advancement Committee came to be and how that plays into the young professional’s world of athletic training. As a compliment to being the chair of that committee, Dr. Harris also is on the NATA AT Compensation Task Force, focusing on Education to help better understand what ATs can do to help with compensation.
Needless to say, Dr. Harris is busy but as you can see from this episode, loves working as an AT and also spending her time in service to the profession. Lots of good information to take away in this episode and we learned a lot on what is happening at the national level. Enjoy.

Dan Ruedeman is an AT that works in the Ortho Trauma department at a University of Colorado Hospital. Dan hasn’t had the most “normal” path to becoming an AT (includes taking the BOC exam 6 times) but has worked his way to this current role and doing so much to promote ATs in physician practice.
In this episode we talk about all the unique aspects of physician practice that ATs can be of help with. Dan has a lot of unique insight and passion for this role and the impact it can have on different patient populations. If you’ve ever considered working in physician practice this is a great episode to listen to in order to get more information. I personally learned a lot from this episode and hope that you do as well.

In honor of Dr. Stamm's book coming out we wanted to reshape her episode on the topic, 'The Brain on Youth Sports'.
Dr. Julie Stamm is an athletic trainer, professor at UW-Madison and soon to be published author. Dr. Stamm has done some incredible work in her career up to this point. That includes working on concussion and brain injury research at Boston University. Dr. Stamm has continued her work with concussion related research in her current role at UW-Madison.
Dr. Stamm’s focus has been primarily on the effects of repeated subconcussive impacts with youth athletes. This has led Dr. Stamm to write her book, ‘The Brain on Youth Sports’. This book focuses on the facts around subconcussive impacts and the youth brain as well as some of the myths that surround the injury and this particular age group.
In this episode we talk about what Dr. Stamm has been up to in her career, her upcoming book and about her research that she had done and has planned for the future. A lot of fantastic information in this episode, please enjoy this conversation with Dr. Julie Stamm.

After finishing Dr. Kutz's book, 'Contextual Intelligence' it was worth sharing this conversation again and also getting prepped for a follow-up conversation. So much in this book is applicable to the athletic training profession but also beyond the profession and something you can build into your everyday life. Enjoy.
----------
Dr. Matt Kutz is professor in the athletic training program but does so much beyond that. Dr. Kutz is on the forefront of research and development when it comes to leadership in not only athletic training, but organizations in general. Dr. Kutz has put out many great articles focusing on leadership in athletic training and we get into the details of how that all got started and where it has taken him in his career. The story is amazing and shows just how far the skillset and knowledge of athletic trainers can go.
This conversation covers a lot when it comes to leadership in athletic training and why this has become such a focus for Dr. Kutz. You will hear about the importance of a specific aspect of Domain 5 and why Dr. Kutz thinks it is so important, not only within the profession of athletic training but helping the community understand what we our profession can do. We also spend time discussing Contextual Intelligence (Book: ) and how it plays into so many roles athletic trainers have in leadership, in the clinic and beyond. Lots of great information about this concept and how we all can apply it to life and work. Please enjoy this episode.
