This is episode second of two episodes with Watts of Love Founder Nancy Economou.
Watts of Love intentionally seeks out the most vulnerable people in the developing world, who live without access to electrical light and provides them with solar lights. They have developed an intentionally designed a financial literacy program where they invest in educating and empowering the light recipients so there is an immediate, tangible impact from DAY ONE.
Financial independence is a foreign concept to those living in extreme poverty. Watts of Love emphasizes the importance of compound savings and of redirecting funds to buy an animal, start a business or send their child to school. By breaking the cycle of dependency on costly and dangerous kerosene, they teach people how to invest in their families, start a path to economic prosperity, break old perceptions of what is possible and see the potential for a new life.
Nancy shares how she did not have a background in business and had no understanding on how to start a company. Instead, she was a stay-at-home mother and spent her time nurturing and caring for her family. As a mother, Nancy exhibited compassion and empathy.
Nancy was able to develop a user-friendly, solar-powered lamp that can be used in any environment to bring light to those oppressed by real and metaphorical darkness. Through Watts of Love, Nancy has found communities in desperate need of light and gives them hope. She became a voice for the voiceless.
