When it comes to addressing the lack of diversity in technology, the checkbox approach coupled with the measurement of rates and figures may or may not be a good place to start. Regardless, it may be that we need to understand the why before anything else.
In this episode, we speak with Di Ciruolo, a top DEI Consultant who asks our listeners to consider, "Why should people care about being allies?".
The current system, she reveals, is full of blame for inequalities. It is full of shame, too. Insiders at top tech companies share eye-opening stories about what DEI is really like in Silicon Valley and beyond. We learn that allyship isn't about blame or shame; it's about action.
Listen in to see why checking the box and improving the numbers being measured isn't enough. It ultimately boils down to the why lead by sponsorship over mentorship.
About the book
In 2020, companies are at a culture crossroad: get dragged under by sticking their collective heads in the sand, or take the right steps to weave diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives (DEI) into every layer of their business.
Companies can do better and know better by implementing allyship into their operations—from creating cultures and onboarding to team-building and benefits. Backed by multitudinous research studies and professional interviews and experience, this book teaches allyship and promotes inclusion at every step of the employee life cycle, including how to lead better with interviews from those doing the work in the tech, biotech, academy, and startup communities.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are the buzzwords of the business world, but it’s the statistics that sting: 85% of corporate executives and board members in the U.S. are white men. Companies are trying to create more inclusive workplaces by creating new policies and changing hiring practices, but they’re missing allyship.

In this episode of Audio Signals, we look at the moon, the stars, and we get inspired to know what is out there.
Our guide and inspiration for this voyage is @Astro_Jaz (AKA Jasmine Singh), a Planetary Science student with a double major in Atmospheric Science. If you haven’t figured it out yet, she REALLY loves space!
We talk about the many reasons why space is so fascinating and why we keep looking up at the sky since the dawn of humanity; what motivates us to venture out there; what we know and what we are trying to learn about our neighbors' planets and those much farther away.
Her many interests range from planetary (and exoplanetary) atmospheres to astrobiology. As a matter of fact, we ended up talking quite a bit about the search for other forms of life in our solar system and beyond.
Since when she was a little earthling, Jasmine would look at the sky with so much wonder, envisioning humans living on the moon and watching down at us on Earth. Now, she is making her dreams come true by studying what she loves and hoping to work for NASA real soon — she is already an intern there.
Thank you for spending time with us and sharing your passion with our audience. We truly enjoyed this conversation.
A toast to many more podcasts with you!

The future is already here, or it is about to happen. Depending on how long you are willing to hold that fast-forward button and how much you want to know about it. Today we are going to be both in the present and the far-away future. Come with us.
Our guest today is Matthew Griffin, often described as “The Adviser behind the Advisers” and a “Young Kurzweil.” A rare talent — as you will undoubtedly witness for yourself during this episode — Matthew’s work is vast, including mentoring Lunar XPrize teams, re-envisioning global education and training with the G20, and helping the world’s largest organisations envision and ideate the future of their products and services, industries, and countries.
Join us on this adventure as we look at what technology already exists, what is good and bad about it, and why policies and politics will be what will make our future either an utopian or a dystopian one. We better all have a say on that.
We are planning to dig much deeper into specific topics with Matthew.
Play this episode to get this incredible journey started.

“The New Grand Strategy" tells the story of a plan, born within the Pentagon, to recapture America’s greatness at home and abroad by elevating sustainability as our new strategic imperative.
We talk about the need for change, the business of sustainability, and so much more with the author, Joel Makower.

About The Book
"The New Grand Strategy" tells the story of a plan, born within the Pentagon, to recapture America’s greatness at home and abroad by elevating sustainability as our new strategic imperative. It aligns our enduring national interests of prosperity and security with a new framework that addresses pressing economic, social, and environmental issues at home, tapping into a trillion-dollar market demand for walkable communities, regenerative agriculture and resource productivity. It is an inspiring vision of what’s possible when Americans hold a collective view of the future and come together to bring it to reality.
This is no idealistic pipe dream or wonky policy prescription. The story that unfolds in this book weaves together hard-nosed economic analysis, a clear-eyed study of demographic and societal shifts, the realities of climate change and resource scarcity, a risk-based assessment of America’s challenges and opportunities, and on-the-ground reporting of how much this is already unfolding throughout the country. By rediscovering the power and discipline of grand strategy―and taking responsibility for our future―America can reimagine the American dream and once again take on “the cause of all mankind.”
Released during one of America’s most divisive presidential election campaigns, "The New Grand Strategy" avoids the partisan rhetoric dividing our nation today. Instead of placing blame, it offers a clear, pragmatic plan that can unite Americans and launch a new era of prosperity and security.

Deb was covering the Cybersecurity Beat when most people didn't even know what it was, way before it was cool, and back when a professional journalist understood the difference between hackers and cybercriminals.
As promised during our first short conversation about resilience during RSA Conference, we are back behind the microphones, and we dig deeper into Deb's story. This, as you will find out, is what inspired her to write her book, the story, the characters, and the whole message and vision that comes with it.
Tune in and enjoy.

About The Book
A hacker war seventeen years in the making erupts after GlobeCom takes over the world through human chip implants.
As dozens of hacker strike teams around the world attempt to relieve GlobeCom of its iron grip on humanity through a coordinated attack on its data centers, Cy is gravely injured and her husband is killed in the attack.
At his funeral, Cy learns the hacker clans are now going after her secret spouse, a chief security officer from GlobeCom’s China hub who has been anonymously feeding the clans inside information to aid their cause. Without any idea the China hub’s CSO is their secret source of information, the hackers leave in the middle of the night to intercept him at the DC hub. Cy realizes they are most likely walking into a turf war between global powers with deep resources and state-of-the-art weaponry. With time running out, Cy must dispatch another team to rescue her secret husband and the clan members converging in DC before she loses nearly everyone she holds dear.
In this exciting cyberthriller, investigative reporter Deb Radcliff tells a gripping story that raises important questions around invasions of privacy in a global bid for power through the use of technology.

If you were on the internet back in the day, you might remember the excitement that came with it. The technology, the opportunities, the democratization of knowledge, and a new way to freely communicate with everyone and about everything. Well, not quite so.
“When EFF was founded on July 10, 1990, it was revolutionary to imagine ordinary people possessing technology that could instantly erase distance, create connection, and access much of the world’s knowledge. The early Internet was an extraordinary place burgeoning with possibilities, and while the early users of digital world didn’t necessarily reflect the wider world or always get things right, they could see that this “new home of Mind” would change everything.
But EFF wasn’t founded on a naïve belief that the coming change would create a digital utopia. Quite the contrary. For all the joy, creativity, and togetherness that technology can help bring, EFF took root because even from those early days it was clear that powerful new digital tools could be used to hurt as well as to heal. Censorship, corporate and government surveillance, and efforts to lock down and control innovation and innovators were all present from the beginning, too. EFF was created to fight against injustice and stand for freedom.
Thirty years later we’re still standing, and taller than ever before.”

Storytelling describes the social and cultural activity of sharing stories .
While they can, and should, entertain, they also are meant to educate, share and preserve cultures, and instill moral values.
The InfoSec community has certainly not been known for using stories to educate users. Still, as technology, cybersecurity, and society have started to intertwine, the need to do so has become clear and unavoidable.
In this Audio Signals episode, we spoke with Dr. Victoria Baines and Rik Ferguson about “Project 2030 — Scenarios for the Future of Cybercrime.”
A multimedia approach to envision our future cybersecurity future that will entertain, educate, and most of all — what we love the most at ITSPmagazine — will make you think.
Sci-Fi or reality? What does 2030 have in store for us?

Neurodiversity at Work is a practical guide that explains what neurodiversity is, why it's essential, and its benefits. It covers how to attract, recruit and engage neurodiverse talent... but, wait a minute!!! How about retaining and helping them flourish for a change?
In this Audio Signals podcast with Theo Smith, we learn about neurodiversity in the workplace and the value they bring to a company when empowered to do so.
As we often do on ITSPmagazine, we do that from the perspective of those who know it best: neurodiverse people.
There are so many examples, case studies and research about the value of all types of diversity in the workplace and our societies. Denying the importance of it is like ignoring the value of biodiversity and its positive effect it has and has had on the development of life on our planet. Then again, people do discount this and many other things, so why are we surprised if we do the same with people?
We want the results, but we do not understand what causes them. We want Supermen and Supergirls to join our business workforce, but we do not bother getting rid of the kryptonite we left scattered all over the place.
Of this and so much more, we talk on this podcast.
Now, if we could actually walk this talk, it would be a lot better for everyone.
Really!!!
About the book:
An organization's employees are its biggest competitive advantage. Performance gains can be achieved through cost saving, process improvement or technology adoption, but the biggest difference is made by people. This means that recruiting, engaging and retaining the very best talent has never been more important.
Crucially, these employees should be a diverse group of people with different approaches, skills and strengths in problem solving and driving innovation. As well as focusing on gender, race, age and class, it is critical that businesses also develop a neurodiverse workforce if they are committed to outperforming the competition and achieving sustainable business growth.
Neurodiversity at Work is a practical guide that explains what neurodiversity is, why it's important and what the benefits are. It covers how to attract, recruit and engage neurodiverse talent and provides guidance on how to adapt HR policies, processes and workplaces to ensure that all employees, including the 2 in 10 employees in the UK who are neurodiverse, can reach their full potential.
Neurodiversity at Work is packed full of case studies from leading organizations who are already seeing the productivity, performance and financial benefits of neurodiversity in the workplace including Microsoft, Ford and EY. Also featured are interviews with people who have successfully adapted their HR processes for neurodiversity, including the Head of Talent Acquisition at IBM and the Head of People and Culture at Autotrader. Including tips, advice, examples and 'how to' actions in every chapter, this is essential reading for every HR professional.

Dr. Eric Cole is a former CIA hacker, cybersecurity commissioner to the Obama administration, and advisor to clients including the Obama family, Bill and Melinda Gates, Lockheed Martin, and McAfee.
In his new book, CYBER CRISIS: Protecting Your Business from Real Threats in the Virtual World, Dr. Cole gives readers a clear-eyed picture of the information war raging in cyberspace.
Drawing upon more than 30 years of experience—from the CIA to the White House to Fortune 500 companies worldwide—Dr. Cole offers practical, actionable advice tailored towards everyday people, often with little to no technical experience, about the steps we should all take to protect our professional and personal data.
During our conversation with Dr. Cole, we hear some of the stories included in the book and how they were shaped by his many experiences in public service, commercial ventures, and civilian life.
Understanding and translating technical topics into business and everyday language may be just that missing link we have been looking for.
While you can never be completely safe and secure, there is a lot you can do to prepare and react, but how can you do that if you do not understand what the problem is?
Listening to this podcast may just help you to get started.
About the book
Today, we live our lives—and conduct our business—online. Our data is in the cloud and in our pockets on our smartphones, shuttled over public Wi-Fi and company networks. To keep it safe, we rely on passwords and encryption and private servers, IT departments and best practices. But as you read this, there is a 70 percent chance that your data is compromised . . . you just don’t know it yet.
Cybersecurity attacks have increased exponentially, but because they’re stealthy and often invisible, many underplay, ignore, or simply don’t realize the danger. By the time they discover a breach, most individuals and businesses have been compromised for over three years. Instead of waiting until a problem surfaces, avoiding a data disaster means acting now to prevent one.
In Cyber Crisis, Eric Cole gives readers a clear-eyed picture of the information war raging in cyberspace. Drawing on 30 years of experience—as a professional hacker for the CIA, as the Obama administration’s cybersecurity commissioner, and as a consultant to clients around the globe from Bill Gates to Lockheed Martin and McAfee—Cole offers practical, actionable advice that even those with little technical background can implement, including steps to take on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to protect their businesses and themselves.
No matter who you are or where you work, cybersecurity should be a top priority. The information infrastructure we rely on in every sector of our lives—in healthcare and finance, for governments and private citizens—is both critical and vulnerable, and sooner or later, you or your company will be a target. This book is your guide to understanding the threat and putting together a proactive plan to minimize exposure and damage, and ensure the security of your business, your family, and your future

Is there such a thing as human morality that can help us distinguish between good and evil. Or, is it influenced by cultures? Nowadays, we talk quite a bit about ethics because technology amplifies the issue: AI, algorithms, privacy, security, and surveillance.
The meaning of life? Bathing at the beach naked or fully dressed? Was Big Brother right or wrong in 1984? How can a personal assistant do its job and respect privacy? Where do we draw a line between safety and privacy?
We discuss these topics and many more in this podcast with Kevin Macnish — Ethics Expert for the European Commission and Former Assistant Professor at the University of Twente.
We started off with defying ethics and who gets to decide what is moral and what is not — then it turns into a full-on roller coaster. It is a fun ride that may scare you a bit and make you think.
What is wrong with that? Well, what is good and what is evil anyway?
Listen up and decide for yourself.
About the book
The Ethics of Surveillance: An Introduction systematically and comprehensively examines the ethical issues surrounding the concept of surveillance.
Addressing important questions such as:
Is it ever acceptable to spy on one's allies?
To what degree should the state be able to intrude into its citizens' private lives in the name of security?
Can corporate espionage ever be justified?
What are the ethical issues surrounding big data?
How far should a journalist go in pursuing information?
Is it reasonable to expect a degree of privacy in public?
Is it ever justifiable for a parent to read a child's diary?
Featuring case studies throughout, this textbook provides a philosophical introduction to an incredibly topical issue studied by students within the fields of applied ethics, ethics of technology, privacy, security studies, politics, journalism and human geography.
REVIEWS
"Ours is a world where surveillance is too often justified on a good guy vs bad guy, simplistic, paradigm. Macnish demonstrates the complexities in the ethics of surveillance in a thoughtful and comprehensive book that warrants careful reading by developers, users and subjects of surveillance alike." —Eric Stoddart, University of St. Andrews, UK
"This book provides a compelling introduction to the wide range of ethical issues raised by the ever-present surveillance technologies that are characteristic of our world. In this lucid and philosophically sophisticated text, Kevin Macnish considers the implications of not only government espionage, but also the surveillance undertaken in the pursuit of national security, commercial competition and excellence in education and, further, demonstrates the numerous ways in which the practice of surveillance raises fundamental questions for social and political philosophers." —Adrian Walsh, University of New England, Australia
