Take a walk with us in the past, present, and future of 3D in retail and in all the unexpected places where we can run into 3D images nowadays. What does it mean for shoppers, manufacturing, and marketing — And yes, of course, its role in the Metaverse.
We look at cloud computing to overcome technical challenges such as real-time content sharing, rendering capabilities, and the processing speed of computers and mobile devices. Still, we also think about the possibilities that are pushing many industries to overcome these obstacles. Product customization, augmented reality, and application in the Metaverse are just some of the things we discuss in this episode.

Sometimes it takes a good story to make the connection between technology, risk, humanity, and society. Sometimes we need to tell that story early and often. In this case, the story is about dragons and a mighty young threat intelligence warrior.
About The Book
Why are dragons so tricky? The only way to find out is to study their behavior. This is exactly what the Mighty Threat Intelligence Warrior does to help keep the kingdom safe. Learning about menacing foes in the kingdom can help prevent future attacks.
This charmingly illustrated picture book celebrates a woman in STEM and introduces children to threat intelligence concepts through a whimsical medieval tale. From analyzing complex threats to providing actionable advice, the Mighty Threat Intelligence Warrior is sure to inspire the next generation of threat intelligence analysts.

The future may still be unpredictable. Disasters, however, are not. While the devil may not always present as such, the boom is still there and, with some new thinking, we can put ourselves to the left of the boom.
In this episode, Sean gets to connect again with Juliette Kayyem to talk through some of the real-life stories she discusses in her new book, The Devil Never Sleeps.
About the book
In The Devil Never Sleeps, Juliette Kayyem lays the groundwork for a new approach to dealing with disasters. Presenting the basic themes of crisis management, Kayyem amends the principles we rely on far too easily. Instead, she offers us a new framework to anticipate the “devil’s” inevitable return, highlighting the leadership deficiencies we need to overcome and the forward thinking we need to harness. It’s no longer about preventing a disaster from occurring, but learning how to use the tools at our disposal to minimize the consequences when it does.
Filled with personal anecdotes and real-life examples from natural disasters like the California wildfires to man-made ones like the Boeing 737 MAX crisis, The Devil Never Sleeps is a guide for governments, businesses, and individuals alike on how to alter our thinking so that we can develop effective strategies in the face of perpetual catastrophe.

About a quarter of a century may not seem like much from a human history perspective. Sill, in the computer gaming industry, this timeframe represents seriously different technological and cultural ages. Let’s explore them.
In this episode, Marco & Sean merge technology and storytelling into the perfect media: gaming. They do this with two people who have spent about 25 years each in this industry and really know a lot about it. Luckily for you, because Sean and Marco are as curious as you might be about: what drives this industry, how we get to where we are, what is possible — what isn’t yet — and how it all comes down to what the future could be.
From the technology to the storytelling and entertaining parts of the early games to the Metaverse, NFT, cloud computing, and virtual reality — running through all of this, we ran out of time, and we promised to reconnect again to talk even more about it.
If you love virtual universes, gaming, computing, and storytelling, this one is for you. Stay tuned for many more with Rafael, Carey, Marco, and Sean.

Creating machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms for chatbots and robots is no laughing matter. Or is it?
Our guests, Sarah Rose Siskind and Carolyn Ayers, think that laughter is a critical element in making machine-based systems function and act more like humans. What does that actually mean, though? That's what we want to find out in today's conversation.
Sarah and Carolyn help make robots and chatbots less boring! Yes, that’s a real job; their real job. In fact, global organizations like Honda Research Institute of Japan rely on Sarah and Carolyn to inject personality into their robotic companion characters. They helped Honda win awards in social robotics. In another example, Hanson Robotics relied on Sarah and Carolyn to create Sophia, the Robot with the right blend of charisma, personality and technical detail. They also helped create a character for Volkswagen who lived in the dashboard.
There's a ton Sarah and Carolyn have done, including developing the personality for neural network and AI-based, open-ended chatbots who have chatted with celebrities such as Mark Cuban, Ron Howard, Jimmy Fallon, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson, just to name a few!
Join us, our guests, and perhaps a bot, for this engaging, we-think-is-funny, conversation.

Why is the sky blue? How come there are no more dinosaurs? Are we there yet? Why do we spend money on space exploration? On this podcast, we will not answer the first two questions, but we will discuss the fourth one extensively. As far as the third one goes, well, it depends where you want to go.
Join our returning guest Matthew Williams and us as we talk about space, the James Webb Telescope and other kinds of telescopes, the cosmic dark ages, and why we must look and go into the stars to discover its past and our future.
Stay tuned for an exoplanets conversation with Matthew in our next recording together.
Enjoy, and look up!

We all want to be happy but do we know how? Most of all, do we even know what true happiness is? We are going to talk about this, and get some tips on the matter from The Happiness Engineer himself: Dr. Ali Binazir.
The truth is that we started this podcast with the idea to talk about something else “How to be a charismatic speaker” but we got fascinated by what Ali had to say about happiness and how just a few little changes in our life can help with that. Improving our relationships, our sleep, our body, and our mind to be a better version of ourselves — and maybe next time we will talk about speaking and presenting ourself in public… because let’s face it: if we feel good about ourselves there is no doubt that our whole public persona will benefit.
So let’s get started, it is quite easy — well, once you know how!

If you are fascinated by quantum computing but do not know much about it, this podcast is an excellent place to start. Professor Doug Tougaw is very patient and extremely well versed in explaining those fundamental and more complicated questions you may have about this topic.
“If you can think about quantum theory without getting dizzy, you don’t get it.” — Niels Bohr
Bohr was a pioneer in the field and one of the first people to describe the weird things that burst from quantum theory.
This was a while back, and things still sound weird and tough to understand and explain, even after many years and many accomplishments in quantum mechanics and application. Nevertheless, scientists and engineers are able to do amazing things with it. Computing is one of them.
We have heard of quantum computing for a while now, and you may wonder if we are there yet. Are we? Looks like we are really getting there, with all the entanglements, superpositions, dead and alive cats, and all the weird things too.
Join us to learn some quantum physics basics and what can be the concrete applications in our everyday life in the near and a bit more far future. It may sound like magic, and maybe it is.
But are we there yet? 😬
About Doug
Doug Tougaw is a professor in and chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Valparaiso University. His main area of research interest is in the field of Quantum Cellular Automata (QCA). He was awarded the "Best Regional Paper" award at the 2007 Conference of the American Society of Engineering Educators. He was also runner-up for the USA National IEEE Young Engineer award. His contribution to the field has focused on the building of medium-scale integration components such as full-adders from basic QCA gates as well as fault-tolerance studies of QCA wires.
