Episode Introduction
In this podcast episode, host Marco Ciappelli and guest Suzie Sheehy discuss the book "The Matter of Everything" which explores the history of physics through the lens of experimentalists and highlights the often-overlooked contributions of women in the field. They also touch on the topic of diversity and inclusion in STEM and the importance of recognizing the biases and cultural legacies that have contributed to the underrepresentation of women in science.”
Welcome to a new Audio Signals Podcast Episode with your host Marco Ciappelli. In this episode, we feature a book that takes readers on a fascinating journey through the experiments that not only unlocked the nature of matter and shaped our understanding of the cosmos but also forever changed the way we live within it. This is a brilliant book that focuses on fundamental problems in physics written from the viewpoint of the experimenter. An inspiring story of discovery and a powerful reminder that progress is a function of our desire to know.
In this episode, Ciappelli and Sheehy discuss the topic of diversity and inclusion in STEM, particularly the contribution of women in science. Sheehy introduces us to the people who, through a combination of genius, persistence, and luck, staged the experiments that changed the course of history. Many of these experiments were conducted by women, and the book highlights the challenges and biases they faced in a male-dominated field.
Sheehy delves into the stories of some of these women, such as Harriet Brooks, Mary is a blouse, and Lisa Meitner, who made significant contributions to the early understanding of radioactive decay, half-life, and the radioactive transformation of elements. The book also explores the cultural and sociological legacy that has led to the underrepresentation of women in physics and other STEM fields.
Ciappelli and Sheehy emphasize the need for more role models for young girls and women to increase their sense of belonging in the field. The conversation also highlights the importance of recognizing the contribution of underrepresented groups in science and ensuring that their stories are included in the main flow of the text.
Join Ciappelli and Sheehy as they discuss the experiments that changed the course of history and the challenges faced by women in science in this episode of Audio Signals Podcast. Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast and read the book to learn more about the fascinating world of physics and the people behind some of the most significant breakthroughs in science.
About the Book
A surprising, fascinating journey through the experiments that not only unlocked the nature of matter and shaped our understanding of the cosmos but also forever changed the way we live within it
"A book about the fundamental problems of physics written from a viewpoint I hadn’t come across before: that of the experimenter. A splendid idea, vividly carried out.” –Philip Pullman, best-selling author of His Dark Materials
Physics has always sought to deepen our understanding of the nature of matter and the world around us. But how do you conduct experiments with the fundamental building blocks of existence? How do you manipulate a particle a trillion times smaller than a grain of sand? How do you cause a proton to sail around a twenty-seven-kilometer-long loop 11,000 times per second? And, crucially, why is all this important?
In The Matter of Everything, accelerator physicist Suzie Sheehy introduces us to the people who, through a combination of genius, persistence and luck, staged the experiments that changed the course of history. From the serendipitous discovery of X-rays in a German laboratory to the scientists trying to prove Einstein wrong (and inadvertently proving him right) to the race to split open the atom, these brilliant experiments led to some of the most significant breakthroughs in science and fundamentally changed our lives. They have helped us detect the flow of lava deep inside volcanoes, develop life-saving medical techniques like diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy, and create radio, TV, microwaves, smartphones—even the World Wide Web itself—among countless other advancements.
Along the way, Sheehy pulls back the curtain to reveal how physics is really done—not only by theorists with equation-filled blackboards but also by experimentalists with hand-blown glass, hot air balloons and cathedral-sized electronics. Celebrating human ingenuity, creativity and above all curiosity, The Matter of Everything is an inspiring story of discovery and a powerful reminder that progress is a function of our desire to know.
DR. SUZIE SHEEHY is a physicist, science communicator and academic who divides her time between research groups at the University of Oxford and University of Melbourne. She is currently focused on developing new particle accelerators for applications in medicine. The Matter of Everything is her first book.

How can nonprofits develop positive, productive, and fully engaged boards that skirt the board blame game that lead to further nonprofit mistakes?
About The Book
Board members not meeting performance expectations is one of the most challenging issues faced by nonprofit organizations and causes considerable frustration among nonprofit leaders—and they usually place the blame on board members.
However, much of what has been written on this topic is based on opinions and experiences of staff professionals, with solutions focused on more training of the board members. Yet the problem persists. So whatever advice that has been offered hasn’t worked. This book is different.
Author and expert leadership consultant Hardy Smith shows that most difficulties contributing to boards not performing as desired are self-inflicted by leaders who repeat flawed practices that could be avoided. As a result, Smith provides what numerous other books on this topic have not: truly effective solutions.
Stop the Nonprofit Board Blame Game:
• uses feedback from a wide variety of board members to reveal their unique perspectives;
• explains why performance problems exist;
• identifies realistic, results-oriented solutions;
• shares proven how-tos for taking action.
This book is the only guide you need to improve the engagement and effectiveness of your board and strengthen relationships. It will constructively transform your organization.

“Overcoming learned helplessness starts with gratitude. We cannot control the privileges we start with in life. But if you take inventory of what you control and seize the opportunities that are available, the results can be astounding.” —K. Braeden Anderson
Having overcome a series of socioeconomic and racial barriers, founder of the Black Resilience Foundation, Braeden Anderson, joins us to discuss how gratitude helps us overcome learned helplessness, which is so often behind the negative, sometimes destructive cycles within African American communities.
About The Book
BLACK RESILIENCE embodies the conversations that the author—a Black practicing attorney and former athlete—has been having with Black mentees, friends, bosses, and peers over the course of his career and his life.
The fact is, despite the powerful message of #BlackLivesMatter and the verbal assurance accompanying it, many Black people are still frustrated. Many of us are cynical, and tired of feeling helpless.
The ultimate message of the book is that we—Black people—have the power to effect positive change in our lives and our communities.
BLACK RESILIENCE shows us how.
Readers will get an honest, empowering roadmap to address concerns ranging from white privilege, the dichotomy of inclusion, and learned helplessness to the challenge and triumph of Black parenthood. They’ll learn how to deploy what the author calls our covert operation of tact. And they’ll see, as the author addresses in the book’s last chapter, that we—Blacks and whites—must build one community.
BLACK RESILIENCE is a plan, it is a goal, and it is a path that we passionately believe belongs in the hands of every reader concerned about how to overcome bias and racism in this country.

You never know where it will start and, even less, where it will end up when Marco and Sean get together with Rafael & Carey. This episode marks the 5th time, and they talk about:
- The need to hype technology, sometimes even when there is not really much to talk about,
- The "real world" consequences of actions that take place in virtual reality/metaverse environments.
- Is there such thing as too many "play-time" choices for kids nowadays? And is that a bad thing?
- Are the new generation losing touch with reality, and is the concept of time too relative in gaming?
They get pretty philosophical but always with a touch of fun.
Join the conversation and put your thinking hat on! It is mandatory!

In this episode, we connect with author, Deb Radcliff, to talk about her new book, some of her real-life-inspired characters, and her Cy Beat podcast on ITSPmagazine. We end up getting very philosophical about the world of technology and it's connection to humanity.
About the book
Cy is still healing from injuries that almost killed her during Operation Backbone when she is called back for a very personal reason. Her son Michael is in the clutches of Damian Strandeski, former chairman of the GlobeCom board and kingpin behind all criminal syndicates operating on the dark web.
Cy quickly deduces that her son is collateral damage in Damian’s grab for the lead developer behind a new artificial intelligence named Telos, which is more powerful than GlobeCom was. As she heads to Europe on a rescue mission, Cy’s eldest son Adam enlists their clan’s rogue copy of Telos to aggressively search for Damian. Then the AI seems to take matters into its own hands…
As they execute their plan to save Michael and catch Damian, Cy and her team face unforeseen retaliation that endangers them all. Will they finally defeat Damian, or will he once again take control of the world through technology?

Learning should be fun, yet most of the time is boring — especially when we associate learning with the school system. The truth is that we are constantly learning, and when is not imposed education for a grade and a piece of paper, we are actually doing it right.
In this episode, we continue our conversations about gaming, technology, past, and future with our friends Rafael and Carey. As usual, we have no plans, and we go with the flow touching on technology, philosophy, storytelling, creativity, and the future we envision for our digital society. Oh, yes, and everything in between.
Join us as we talk about gaming as a learning tool: from books to toys, sports, music, video games, and virtual reality.
