In this exciting episode of the Audio Signals Podcast, hosted by Marco Ciappelli, we step outside the tech world and delve into the creative realm of storytelling, child psychology, and the magic of children's literature. Today, Marco engages in a rich dialogue with the multi-talented children's author, neuroeducation consultant, and anxiety coach Noel Foy.

Throughout this enlightening conversation, Noel unravels the intent behind her fascinating stories for children and how they hold a deeper purpose beyond mere entertainment. This podcast will make you reconsider the role of storytelling, its historical roots, and its indispensable value in shaping our perceptions.

An anxiety coach and a mother herself, Noel expertly brings her wealth of knowledge into the narrative, particularly about the concept of executive function. She shares her unique insights on the necessity of cultivating cognitive, social, and emotional skills in children, which inevitably stimulates the listener's curiosity and provokes thought.

Marco then delves into Noel's latest book, "Are You a Bird Like Me?" to explore the impact of visuals on the learning process. In a compelling twist, this episode also showcases the collaborative dynamics between an author and an illustrator, a symbiotic relationship that breathes life into a narrative.

Perhaps one of the most captivating parts of the conversation revolves around the book's core theme, focusing on acceptance, diversity, and the power of collaboration. Episode Introduction

Welcome to the Audio Signals Podcast; today's episode features an exciting conversation with Andy Clark, a philosopher and cognitive scientist from the University of Sussex. Andy's interests lie in understanding how minds work, and in this episode, we discuss his new book, The Experience Machine. The book delves into how our minds predict and shape reality and how we can control our predictions to a certain extent.

We start by exploring the idea that brains are prediction machines, and everything that our brains do can be understood by thinking of them as in the business of making predictions, not just about the world outside but also about our own bodies and future activities. As we discuss the premise of the book, we ponder over the question of how much control we have over our predictions and how much control others have over them. Andy's response to this is intriguing - we probably have a bit more control than we think, but not as much as we'd like.

We also explore the science and technology that allow Andy and others to bring this theory upfront. Andy shares that we're well beyond the stage of it just being a kind of idea. It's now a well-worked-out computational story about how predictions and sensory evidence are balanced by different bits of our brains. The theory is pretty well dominant, and we're hitting both the bases of having a theory and showing that brains like ours can actually do it.

So, sit back and enjoy this exciting conversation that will change the way you think about your mind, your predictions, and your reality. Don't forget to share and subscribe to the podcast, and invite your friends and family to join in on the fascinating journey of exploration and discovery.

    About the Book

Widely acclaimed philosopher and cognitive scientist Andy Clark unpacks this provocative new theory that the brain is a powerful, dynamic prediction engine, mediating our experience of both body and world. From the most mundane experiences to the most sublime, reality as we know it is the complex synthesis of sensory information and expectation. Exploring its fascinating mechanics and remarkable implications for our lives, mental health, and society, Clark nimbly illustrates how the predictive brain sculpts all human experience. Chronic pain and mental illness are shown to involve subtle malfunctions of our unconscious predictions, pointing the way towards more effective, targeted treatments. Under renewed scrutiny, the very boundary between ourselves and the outside world dissolves, showing that we are as entangled with our environments as we are with our onboard memories, thoughts, and feelings. And perception itself is revealed to be something of a controlled hallucination.

Unveiling the extraordinary explanatory power of the predictive brain, The Experience Machine is a mesmerizing window onto one of the most significant developments in our understanding of the mind.

    Episode Introduction

"Audio Signals hosts Marco Ciappelli and Sean Martin explore the challenges of preserving freshwater sources with guest Tara Lordi. They discuss her innovative, environmentally friendly solution to replace harmful chemicals used in treating lakes, streams, and canals."

Welcome to Audio Signals, where insightful stories, captivating conversations, and intriguing topics that matter are brought to the listeners. Hosts Marco Ciappelli and Sean Martin are excited to dive into an important issue that affects the planet and the water people drink. They invite the audience to join, share thoughts, and subscribe to the show for many more fascinating stories.

In this episode, the challenges faced in maintaining and preserving freshwater sources are discussed with guest Tara Lordi, who, along with her late husband, started a company in 2010 to address the issues surrounding the use of chemicals in lakes, streams, and canals. Born out of their love for water and the great outdoors, Tara's company offers an innovative solution that replaces the use of harmful chemicals with a more environmentally friendly approach.

During the conversation, Tara shares a startling discovery she made when she noticed a sign at a lake warning against swimming for 24 hours. Upon further investigation, she found that the lake had been treated with dangerous chemicals that cause cellular death, intended to eliminate invasive weeds. This revelation led Tara and her husband to develop a solution to remove these weeds without resorting to harmful chemicals – a 12-foot vessel capable of removing 500 pounds of biomass per minute.

As the broader implications of reliance on chemicals are explored, the discussion takes a philosophical turn. Why have people become so dependent on shortcuts that often create bigger problems in the long run? Is it ignorance, greed, or something else entirely? Tara shares her insights on these questions and the challenges she's faced in promoting her innovative solution to municipalities and other stakeholders.

The potential side effects of chemical use in waterways are also examined, from the impact on aquatic life to the possible absorption of these chemicals into human bodies. Tara highlights the need for a more environmentally friendly approach, as well as the crucial role that technology can play in addressing these issues.

Join this thought-provoking episode of Audio Signals as the pressing need for sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions in preserving freshwater sources is explored. Remember to share thoughts and subscribe to the show for many more fascinating stories.

    Episode Introduction

In this episode of Audio Signals, host Marco Ciappelli and guest Jonathan Shroyer take a deep dive into the world of professional video gaming, discussing its history, the psychology behind it, the economy surrounding it, and its future in the metaverse. From humble beginnings in the 1950s to today's multimillion-dollar sponsorships and massive global audiences, the evolution of video gaming as a sport and entertainment phenomenon is a fascinating topic that is sure to captivate listeners.

Welcome to another episode of Audio Signals where we explore the past, present, and future of professional video gamers. In this episode, we delve into the psychology, economy, and entertainment side of the video gaming industry. Our guest for the day is Jonathan Shroyer, the Chief CX Innovation Officer at Arise, who runs the gaming consulting verticals. As we begin the podcast, we take a stroll down memory lane and look at how video games evolved over the years, beginning from the first multiplayer game in 1958 called "Tennis for Two" to the emergence of consoles like Nintendo, Sega, and PlayStation in the 90s. However, the pivotal point that made video gaming more accessible was the development of the internet and the ability to connect with other players from different parts of the world. As the technology improved, video games went from local competitions to international gaming competitions with millions of people streaming on platforms like Twitch to watch professional gamers compete.

Jonathan explains that gamers want to be the best in the world, and the virtual identity that comes with it is one of the reasons why they play video games. With the advent of the Creator economy, gamers can now monetize their skills by becoming influencers or creators on platforms like Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok. This has turned gaming into an economic phenomenon, with sponsors and fans watching professional gamers play video games in packed arenas. The audience for video gaming is massive, with over 3.5 billion people globally interested in playing video games, and the top 5 to 10% of players spending 70-80% of the video game revenue worldwide.

As we move towards the metaverse, Jonathan explains that the opportunities for gamers and creators to monetize their skills will only increase. The metaverse, which had a valuation of 59 billion in 2021, is projected to be worth 1.6 trillion by 2033, and gaming, blockchain, eSports, and creators will play a significant role in this growth.

The evolution of video games has been remarkable, and technology has played a vital role in its growth. With the rise of the Creator economy, gaming has turned into an economic phenomenon, and the future looks bright for gamers and creators. Stay tuned for more exciting discussions on Audio Signals.
