  • DOJ Reopens Investigation Into the Tulsa Massacre Thanks to Emmett Till Act

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is reopening the investigation into the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, a tragic event where a white mob attacked a thriving Black community in Oklahoma, resulting in the deaths of hundreds. This important step is made possible by the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Act, which allows the DOJ to look into old cases of racial violence that have long been ignored.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke stressed the need to acknowledge the pain and suffering of the victims and their families, who have sought justice for generations. The Tulsa Massacre is remembered as one of the worst acts of racial violence in American history, where the Greenwood District was destroyed in just a few hours.

This federal investigation aims to uncover the truth and provide some closure to the descendants of those who suffered, including two living survivors. A public report detailing the findings is expected by the end of the year.

Flood and flash flood warnings stretch from the southern Appalachians to north Georgia and southeast Tennessee. A tornado watch is in effect for much of central and eastern North Carolina, with parts of eastern South Carolina and southeast Virginia also at risk.

Tropical storm warnings remain in place along the coast from Georgia to South Carolina and extend inland to parts of Georgia and the Carolinas. High wind warnings have been issued for a vast area, including the central and southern Appalachians, parts of Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana.
