On Sept. 24, 1935, boxer Joe Louis made history as the first African-American to draw a $1 million purse in the field of boxing. Born in 1914, Louis achieved this milestone in a fight against former heavyweight champion Max Baer at Yankee Stadium. Despite Baer's tough reputation—having been knocked down only once before by Frankie Campbell—Louis dominated the bout, knocking Baer out in the fourth round.
Beyond boxing, Louis became a cultural icon, symbolizing anti-Nazi sentiment before and during World War II. He also helped integrate professional golf, breaking the PGA’s color barrier in 1952.
Louis died in 1981, and President Ronald Reagan arranged his burial with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

The Police Leaders for Community Safety, a national organization of law enforcement professionals, has officially endorsed Kamala Harris for president.
New data reveals a significant milestone in public safety: The homicide rate has dropped 16 percent since 2020, making it the largest one-year decrease ever recorded. This is a crucial development as communities across America work towards safer environments.
In a statement, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized that before the Biden administration, the nation faced a troubling surge in crime, including record increases in murders. She attributed the decrease to the American Rescue Plan, which allocated over $15 billion for public safety initiatives, local police departments have received essential resources to combat crime.
This funding has been used by local police departments to hire and retain officers and invest in community violence intervention programs. Additionally, under the Biden administration, violent crime is now at its lowest level in nearly 50 years, the statement said.

In a major endorsement, more than 400 economists and economic policy experts, including former Federal Reserve officials and Nobel laureates, have thrown their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris' vision for an "opportunity economy." The bipartisan group highlights her focus on supporting middle-class families and small businesses in contrast to the economic policies of Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump.
Harris' approach includes lowering costs and fostering growth, while Trump's proposals like a national sales tax could raise taxes for the average family by nearly $4,000, sparking inflation and economic instability, according to experts.
Both candidates are scheduled to outline their economic plans this week in battleground states like Georgia and Pennsylvania, where their contrasting visions are expected to take center stage.

Texas has seen a significant surge in maternal deaths since the implementation of its abortion ban, raising questions and concerns about the impact of restrictions on women's health. A recent analysis by the Gender Equity Policy Institute (GEPI) revealed that from 2019 to 2022, the rate of maternal mortality in Texas jumped by 56%.
That rise follows the state's 2021 ban on abortion care. Texas' legislature enacted Senate Bill 8 in September 2021, banning abortion as early as five weeks into pregnancy, well before the Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade.
When it comes to Black women, who already faced higher risks, they saw their maternal mortality rates climb from 31.6 to 43.6 per 100,000 live births.
Doctors in Texas are reporting an increase in fear among pregnant women, and say requests for sterilization procedures have doubled.

The Associated Press reports Vice President Kamala Harris raised $27 million at a packed New York City fundraiser on Sunday, marking her largest haul since leading the ticket, according to a Harris campaign aide.
Despite having a financial edge over former President Donald Trump, the funds will be crucial to counter the expensive advertising from well-funded pro-Trump groups, said the aide, who spoke anonymously about private fundraising details.
The event was held at Cipriani Wall Street’s grand Greek Revival ballroom, where Harris challenged Trump on his refusal to debate her again, saying, “I feel strongly that we owe it to the voters to meet once more before Election Day.”
Trump has refused to debate Harris again.

In a shocking revelation, North Carolina's Republican gubernatorial nominee, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, is facing allegations of posting disturbing comments on a pornographic website over a decade ago. According to reports, he used an anonymous username, allegedly made inflammatory statements supporting slavery, referred to himself as a "black Nazi," and shared inappropriate memories from his teenage years.
Robinson has denied the claims, stating that the comments are not his and also blaming possible artificial intelligence. However, it's not the first time he's been in the spotlight for controversial remarks. The potential fallout from these allegations could impact not only Robinson's campaign but also other Republicans on the ballot, including former President Donald Trump.
North Carolina is a crucial state, and any toxicity from Robinson's campaign could have a ripple effect. But despite the controversy, Robinson is still in the race against North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein. Democrats are already using the news to connect Robinson to Trump, who has praised Robinson in the past.

Today is Black Voter Day, and I spoke with Tiyale Hayes, the Executive Vice President of Insights and Multiplatform Analytics at BET. He said today is about centering the Black agenda.
"We want to make sure we are inspiring the black community to vote. Over half of all 18 to 24-year-olds did not vote in the 2020 election, and we know that Black men are right now targeted by millions of bots spreading misinformation. So we want, on this National Black Voter Day, to bring action so that we can be inspired and included in this program."
And he says, here's what you need to do.
"So National Black Voter Day is all about checking your registration, getting registered, making sure that your registration matches your address and putting together a plan to vote. Your vote is your power, and we want to make sure that every Black person in this community is engaged in this process. If you happen to be in Philadelphia Friday night, come out for our Vote Fest Rally from 6:00 until 8:00 in Philly."
To check your registration, you can go to canivote.org.

According to CNN, Mark Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina, made controversial comments over a decade ago on a pornography website, referring to himself as a “black NAZI!” and supporting the reinstatement of slavery. Despite denying these comments, Robinson, who has a history of anti-trans rhetoric, also admitted to watching transgender pornography on the site.
The messages were linked to Robinson through biographical details and a shared email address. Despite mounting pressure to step down, Robinson called the allegations “salacious tabloid lies.”
Robinson’s controversial past includes anti-abortion stances, offensive remarks about civil rights leaders, and referring to former first lady Michelle Obama as "human waste."
