A Trump-appointed federal judge in Oregon has again paused the president’s plan to deploy National Guard troops into Portland, ruling that the administration appeared to defy an earlier court order. The decision comes after protests near a Portland immigration facility and criticism from Govs. Gavin Newsom and Tina Kotek, who called the move a political occupation.

Musician and producer Ike Turner Jr., the son of Ike and Tina Turner, has died at 67 in Los Angeles after years of health complications. Adopted by Tina Turner as a child, Ike Jr. worked as a sound engineer and producer, sharing a Grammy for his father’s 2007 album “Risin’ with the Blues.” Despite a complex relationship with his parents, he continued performing with his band, The Love Thang, keeping the Turner family’s musical spirit alive.

President Donald Trump once dismissed Project 2025 as “seriously extreme.” Now, he is embracing the Heritage Foundation’s 900-page conservative blueprint, leaning on it to guide shutdown decisions. Trump even touted a Truth Social meeting with budget chief Russell Vought, one of the plan’s authors, to discuss federal agency cuts.

A Washington Post poll reveals that 47% of Americans blame President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress for the government shutdown. Thirty percent point to Democrats, while 23% remain unsure. The poll also shows strong support for extending subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare — the central issue Democrats cite for backing the shutdown.

President Donald Trump drew fresh criticism after telling military officers at Quantico that “there are two N-words, and you can’t use either of them,” referring to both a racial slur and nuclear weapons. The remark echoed a Truth Social post he made in June that compared nuclear language to racial slurs.

Washington remains in gridlock on day two of the government shutdown. Republicans push a short-term bill stripped of extended Affordable Care Act subsidies, while Democrats refuse to budge. The Senate is in recess for Yom Kippur, delaying any reopening until at least Friday. The White House says thousands of federal workers could face layoffs, while small businesses, loan programs, and nutrition aid feel the strain.

On this day in 1967, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first Black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. His groundbreaking work as NAACP chief counsel, solicitor general, and later as a justice reshaped America’s understanding of equality and justice.

Health care costs could rise sharply next year. A new analysis from KFF finds Affordable Care Act premiums could increase 114%, from $888 to nearly $1,900 a year, if Congress fails to renew enhanced subsidies by year’s end. About 22 million Americans currently rely on those tax credits. Democrats are calling for immediate action with open enrollment beginning Nov. 1, while Republicans say they may revisit the issue later. Without a deal, millions could face sticker shock and even lose coverage.

Two powerhouse unions — the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) — are suing the Trump administration. They argue threats to permanently fire 750,000 federal workers during the shutdown are unlawful and amount to political extortion. A memo from OMB director Russell Vought, also tied to Project 2025, told agencies to “use this opportunity” to cut staff. If the plan moves forward, entire agencies could be gutted overnight, leaving families without paychecks and communities without protections.

The U.S. economy shed 32,000 private-sector jobs in September, according to ADP. Construction, manufacturing, and leisure and hospitality all saw losses, while the Midwest was hit the hardest. Wage growth slowed to 4.5% for job stayers and 6.6% for job changers, down from 7.1% in August. The only sector showing gains was large employers with more than 500 workers, which added 33,000 jobs.
