Assata Shakur, a former member of the Black Liberation Army, has died in Cuba at 78. Shakur was convicted in the 1973 murder of a New Jersey state trooper, escaped prison in 1979, and fled to Cuba, where she was granted political asylum. Her decades as a fugitive made her one of the FBI’s most wanted figures, with a $2 million reward for her capture. Cuban authorities said she died in Havana of health complications and old age.

For the first time in U.S. history, a former FBI director has been indicted. James Comey is facing charges of lying to Congress and obstructing a proceeding. President Trump hailed the move on Truth Social, while the case is being led by interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan — formerly Trump’s personal lawyer. Attorney General Pam Bondi insists no one is above the law, but the case raises concerns about politics influencing justice.

Every living former Federal Reserve chair and top Republican economic officials are urging the Supreme Court not to let President Donald Trump remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook. Economists warn the move could collapse U.S. credibility in global markets, threatening the Fed’s independence.

Oklahoma Republican Sen. Shane Jett has filed legislation to honor Charlie Kirk, the conservative Turning Point USA leader killed on Sept. 10. Proposals include designating Oct. 14 as “Charlie Kirk Free Speech Day,” requiring every state college to create a “Charlie Kirk Memorial Plaza,” and commissioning statues of Kirk and his family. Another resolution would recognize Kirk as a “martyr.” Kirk’s legacy remains divisive, as he had faced criticism for past remarks about race and diversity programs.

On Sept. 25, 1861, the Union Navy allowed African Americans to enlist for the first time during the Civil War. Many were formerly enslaved people who escaped to join the fight for freedom and the Union cause. Eight African American sailors went on to earn the Medal of Honor for bravery. But progress was slow — African Americans were restricted to limited roles for decades, and the Navy didn’t commission its first Black officers until 1944.

The White House is escalating the budget standoff that could trigger a government shutdown. In a late-night memo, the Budget Office told agencies to prepare for mass firings if Congress does not pass a spending bill by next week. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, in a post on X, told OMB Director Russell Vought to “get lost,” while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the memo “an attempt at intimidation.” President Donald Trump and Republicans want a seven-week extension with no changes, while Democrats push for health care and Medicare priorities.

A deadly shooting at an ICE field office in Dallas left one detainee dead and two others critically injured after a sniper opened fire from a rooftop before killing himself. Investigators say a bullet was marked “ANTI-ICE,” and officials are calling it a targeted attack. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and Sen. Ted Cruz warned that harsh rhetoric against ICE has fueled tensions. The Dallas office has processed more than 8,400 immigrants since President Donald Trump returned to office, facing bomb threats and protests over detainee treatment.
