The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 54th Annual Legislative Conference is underway in Washington, one of the largest gatherings of Black political power and policy in the nation. This year’s theme, “Made for This Moment,” highlights the push for solutions on issues shaping Black America — from voting rights and the racial wealth gap to diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Organizers say the goal is to turn dialogue into action and ensure policy reflects the lived experiences of Black communities.

Guitarist Yasmin Williams’ Sept. 18 Kennedy Center performance was disrupted by the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans. Audience members booed and heckled the musician, a critic of Trump and Ric Grenell. Security intervened as about 20 men, some wearing MAGA hats, filled the audience. The incident raised concerns about growing political influence under Trump-aligned leadership at the Kennedy Center and its impact on artistic freedom.

A Florida jury convicted 59-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh of attempting to assassinate then-candidate Donald Trump, assaulting a Secret Service agent, and multiple gun charges. Seconds after the verdict, Routh tried to stab himself in the neck with a pen as his daughter screamed for him to stop and U.S. Marshals intervened. Routh, who represented himself, faces a possible life sentence. President Donald Trump praised the conviction on social media, thanking the Justice Department and the jury.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to allow Donald Trump to remove Rebecca Slaughter, a Democratic commissioner on the Federal Trade Commission, while her case continues. The decision signals the Court could reconsider a 1935 precedent limiting presidential control over independent agencies. Critics warn the ruling could politicize institutions from consumer protection boards to the Federal Reserve. The Court will hear arguments in December.

Hundreds of Hollywood and Broadway stars, from Robert De Niro to Kerry Washington, have signed an ACLU-organized letter defending free speech after ABC suspended late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. The letter called the suspension “a dark moment for freedom of speech in our nation” and warned that “if it happens to one of us, it happens to all of us.” Whoopi Goldberg and New York City mayoral candidate Zoan Mandani added their voices to the backlash.

President Donald Trump, speaking at Charlie Kirk’s memorial in Arizona, teased what he called a historic Oval Office announcement. The White House is expected to advise caution around acetaminophen (Tylenol) use during pregnancy, linking it to autism risk, and Trump is also expected to tout the cancer drug Leucovorin as a possible therapy. CDC data show autism diagnoses have sharply increased since 2000.

NBC News reports that federal investigators have found no evidence linking the alleged shooter in Charlie Kirk’s killing to left-wing groups. The report, citing three sources familiar with the probe, contradicts President Donald Trump and administration officials, who have publicly blamed the “radical left.” Kirk, a conservative commentator and Turning Point USA leader, was shot and killed in a case that has drawn national attention. The investigation remains ongoing.
