Officials have identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the suspect in the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Robinson was turned in after a family member raised concerns and shared messages he exchanged with his roommate. Investigators later recovered the suspected murder weapon, a Mauser .30-06 bolt-action rifle, and found engraved bullet casings with phrases like “hey fascist! catch!” and “bella ciao.” Robinson faces charges including aggravated murder and obstruction of justice. The assassination has renewed fears of escalating political violence, drawing criticism from leaders across the aisle.

Inflation rose 0.4% in August, doubling July’s pace, and a new WalletHub report shows which U.S. metro areas are being hit the hardest. Among 23 cities analyzed, Tampa was the most impacted, followed by San Diego, Philadelphia, Anchorage and Los Angeles. Houston, Miami, Boston, Dallas and Honolulu had the lowest recent inflation rates, while Atlanta, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas and Detroit had the lowest year-over-year increases. WalletHub used Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI data to compare regional inflation disparities across the country.

On this day in 1944, Barry Eugene Carter — better known as Barry White — was born in Galveston, Texas. Raised in a family of gospel singers, he showed talent early and rose to become one of the most iconic bass singers and a disco pioneer. His debut album “I’ve Got So Much to Give” produced the hit “I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby.” After slowing in the 1980s, he resurged in the 1990s with “The Icon Is Love.” A Grammy winner with more than 100 gold albums, White left an indelible mark on music before his death in 2003.

President Donald Trump said on “Fox & Friends” that a suspect is now in custody in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kirk was shot and killed Wednesday during a PACT event at Utah Valley University. Authorities said a sniper fired a single round that struck Kirk in the neck. Trump said the suspect’s father turned him in with the help of a minister. Kirk, 31, co-founded Turning Point USA and was a close Trump ally. He leaves behind a wife and two young children. Trump announced Kirk will be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Inflation climbed 0.4% in August, according to federal data, doubling July’s pace. Over the past year, inflation is up 2.9%. Food prices rose 0.5%, with fruits and vegetables jumping 1.6%, the biggest monthly increase in that category. Rent continued to rise, with the shelter index up 0.4%. Energy costs also increased 0.7%. The government’s report shows no big surprises, just more signs that price pressures are still lingering.

At least six HBCUs — Alabama State, Hampton, Virginia State, Clark Atlanta, Southern University in Baton Rouge, and Bethune-Cookman — were forced into lockdown after receiving threats. Alabama State officials called them “terroristic threats.” Georgia’s Spelman College also told students to shelter in place after Clark Atlanta was targeted. So far, police say no injuries. The incidents underscore the fragility of campus safety for historically Black colleges and universities.

Students in Colorado are facing another tragedy after two teenagers were shot at Evergreen High School outside Denver. Police said the shooter, another student, turned the gun on himself and later died. One victim remains in critical condition, while the other is stable. Colorado has a painful history of mass shootings, from Columbine to Aurora to Boulder, and now Evergreen joins that list. Gov. Jared Polis condemned the attack, saying, “This kind of violence has no place in Colorado, especially our schools where kids should feel safe to learn and grow.”

The National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers filed a lawsuit in Oregon, alleging the rollback of protections for sensitive locations violates federal law and religious freedom. A new Bank of America report shows domestic migration in the U.S. dropped 20% in the second quarter, falling below pre-pandemic levels.
