Auspol Explained would like to acknowledge the Whadjuk Nyoongar people and their Elders as the owners and custodians of the Land that the video was filmed and edited on. This Land was stolen and never ceded. It always was and always will be Aboriginal Land.
Why run as an independent? And how do independent candidates fund their campaigns? In this interview I ask Independent Candidate Georgia Steele all about campaigning - from the very basics of registering as a candidate to finances, the importance of volunteers, forward planning, and how someone gets their name known in the community without the support of a political party's recognition and funds. To learn more about if an independent candidate is running in your area search up "independent candidate for (your electorate/state/territory)" near an election and see what information there is.

When was Christmas Island discovered? And when did it become an Australian territory? In this episode I'll go through the history and politics of Christmas Island from its discovery by Europeans, to how ownership has changed hands, the darker parts of its history with mistreatment of Chinese workers, to the present day, and also: the crabs. The millions and millions of crabs.

What's the role of a party leader and what do they do? I sat down with the former Deputy Prime Minister/Leader of the National Party to ask him about the added responsibilities and commitments that come with party leadership as well as a few questions to do with how that intersects with the Coalition.

The ACT Parliament is unique in Australia in that it doubles for local government - instead of having a separate elected body. I sat down with an ACT MP to ask a bunch of questions - from how the parliament balances the roles of being a local councillor with the same responsibility of a state MP, to how the government functions when no single party has enough seats to be in charge by itself, and more!

I sat down with Dr. Anne Aly, Labor Member for Cowan, to ask about what it's like campaigning in a marginal seat. When your margin is less than 1% every election is incredibly close and results can take up to two weeks to find out who won. So how does that impact the time, resources, and strategies of a campaign? Watch to find out.

The Whip is an important part of parliament and parties running smoothly - and I don't mean a physical whip being used to get politicians in line. It's a person! In this video I go over their role and duties and how this helps organise what happens when and with who. They're a very important part of running larger parties.

What are the laws protecting and restricting freedom of speech in Australia? From defamation, trying to ban the communist party, the racial discrimination act, 90s High Court cases, television broadcast regulations, to government secrecy laws - I dive into the broad and often misunderstood topic of freedom of speech in Australia. There's a lot to say! First off: we don't have a 1st amendment ensuring freedom of speech as a constitutional right. That's an American thing.

Are you a young person wanting to know more about being involved in politics? Do you wonder if there's any job skills you need to become a political candidate and get into parliament? Well I sat down with the youngest member of the Senate - WA Greens Senator Jordon Steele-John - and asked him about his experience as a young person, how to affect change, and how young people should give politics a go!
Content warning: he very briefly mentions the sexual assault allegations in Adelaide schools, though does not go into any detail.

In this episode I address a strange controversy: why local government continues to exist despite multiple referendums on the matter. Local government isn't mentioned in the constitution as a few angry commenters like to point out so in this silly episode I trick you into learning all about local councils and history while also debunking the myth that they're not legally allowed to be real. Enjoy!
