Australian Hunting Backcountry

I am joined by my friend Henk from Crispi Aus-NZ to talk about the changes to the Crispi lineup for 2026. Henk very kindly provided me with a pair of the Futura PWR to use in NZ earlier this year and after spending a month in them on 3 seperate hunts I am keeping them.

There may be some new products coming out and I'm advocating for a line of boots for female hunters but if you do have smaller feet, definitely look at the Future CX.

As you all know, I've become a big fan of the many uses the Walk N Stalk Carbon+ bar offers on my hunting trips. My good friend Paul joins me to share his intimate knowledge as both a Paramedic and backcountry hunter, around what a first aid kit will look like for backpack hunting.

We are working on developing a spreadsheet with a suggested list of items and there will be updates on this via my social media.

I also chat with Rod Bickerton from Pen Elegance about the unique pens he is making - which by the way would be perfect for Father's Day! I have one and get alot of comments on it. See what Rod can do for you with whatever pen you have in mind; www.penelegance.com - 0424 944 017.

Rich from 'Shift Focus' joins me to discuss supplements that could be advantageous for the backcountry hunter - from energy, focus, stamina, sleep and recovery. The company is founded by first responders and Rich himself is a backcountry hunter.

Shift Focus also produces 'Fuel & Repair' a creatine & collagen mixture and we discuss the potential advantages that this may offer. I know that after my month long trip to NZ I'm going to give it a go and see if my knees appreciate me for it.

As a special gift to podcast listeners, the team at Shift Focus are offering podcast listeners a special code for 10% off and free shipping - listen in to find out what that code is.

4 of us ventured into the NZ west coast wilderness to hunt a tahr ballot block. This was my first time hunting with Jesse and Brando and I don't think I've ever laughed as much. We all got tested - physically, mentally and logistically. Despite some really challenging times, we all came out the other side of it and were planning our trip back before we'd even finished the chopper ride.

I really want to thank everyone that has reached out to me so far with questions and comments. I learnt alot on this trip and will be making some changes to gear and ensuring I do some maintenance.

Thinking about doing a similar trip? Come and join me on one of my Backpack Hunting Fundamentals course. Book through the Nature's Perks website.

With a massive thanks to Glen Thurston from @MentalHunts we were taken into an amazing NZ backcountry location to chase Chamois.

From the experience of the chopper ride to the wind storm, gear failures, physical challenges and a missed shot we had just about one of everything on this trip.

It was an absolute honour to be hosted by Glen and spend time in the mountains with the 'Thurstonator'. Also a big shout out to our buddy Craig for coming along and making this trip even more enjoyable.

Stay tuned because the hunts continue...

We are on the countdown for our BIG New Zealand trip and I chat with Lawson about some of the decisions, prep and purchases he's made in getting ready for his first backpacking style hunting trip.

We leave on April 22 and will be recording more episodes in the field to keep you in the loop on how we go.

I also chat with the creator of Magnus Clip - a very useful tool for those that use rangefinders and need ready access to them. You can find them here; www.magnusclip.com or reach out via Instagram @magnus_clip

Ever dreamed of hunting in Alaska...me too. Ever dreamed of getting chomped on by a grizzly....me neither - but in this episode I chat with Tyler who was out hunting with his father and had a life changing bear encounter. Thankfully (and obviously) he lived and is able to tell us all about it. Not only that but he's turned this into a positive and is helping others to not become bear poop.

Make sure to give him a follow and reach out if you are after advice on an Alaskan hunt; grizzlylife907

Hi team, welcome to the first episode for 2026.

In this episode I chat with James about using mountain bikes for a backcountry hunt in the Alpine National Park. We cover off on some of the difficulties he experienced with this form of backcountry transport and some of the benefits. James also passes on some tips for anyone looking to give this a try but if you'd like to see some pics from their trip check out his instagram; @james5platt
