Winter is a great time for eging in Victoria, with some of the biggest squid turning up to hunt in shallow, clear water during the cooler months. Today's guest is Nev Hayes, a Victorian angler who has fished the Phillip Island area since he was a toddler. Nev targets a lot of species from his kayak, but over recent weeks has been blitzing the local squid population, with good numbers of XL squid including a 50cm hood-length specimen boated. Refershingly, Nev likes to keep things really simple and shares his strategies for doing do with ALF listeners during today's interview.

Mick Hassett describes slow pitch jigging on the Great Barrier Reef as being like "sticking your hand in the lolly jar with a blindfold on". We could try to focus on a single species, but the fact is that slow pitch jigging is so devastatingly effective (often even more so than live bait) and the species list is so long that you never know what will grab your lure. So instead we've focused this interview on the tackle, the jigs and the techniques for getting the most out of this exhilarating style of fishing!

Damon Olsen is one of the icons of Australian sportfishing. He founded Nomad Sportfishing and personally fished pretty much every reef system from Fraser Island to the northern tip of Cape York, including a few that have since been declared green zones. It's been a little while since the ALF podcast has paid the flathead population of Lake Macquarie a bit of a visit, but today's interview sets that problem straight! Richard Smith has been fishing the Newcastle area since he was just 9 years old, has been fishing the lake from a kayak since 2010 and in 2016 got involved with Yakhunters. His reputation for putting down his rod even during a contest to help less experienced anglers is legendary and through his involvement with the Lake Mac trophy flathead program he's become a prolific contributor to our understanding of the species.
