  • 018: Interview with David Villa

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing David Villa, author and founder/CEO of IPD Marketing Solutions, to discuss author branding and growth.

In this episode, you will discover:

    • Why David wrote his bestselling book, Lead or Be Lunch
    • Where branding is REALLY established (it isn't simply a logo; in fact, your logo is the least of your concerns!)
    • The difference between being self-focused and "peripherally focused" when it comes to selling books
    • How you can manage being a one-person show while working toward being a multi-person show
    • The importance of knowing your lane and hiring/partnering with people who are WAY BETTER than you are
    • David's suggestions on how to comfortably sell your books (for people who hate the idea of selling)
    • Why it's critical that the cart and horse are put in proper order with regard to writing a book
    • David's #1 rule for authors to successfully sell their book
    • The one thing entrepreneurs get wrong and overlook when it comes to branding themselves
    • The question David HATES being asked (and the answer, which counters what the "experts" say)
    • What the concept of branding starts with, before a customer buys tools or products and before a brand even has a social media presence)
    • The biggest mistake people make by going full-on toward a goal without thinking it through
    • David's skyscraper analogy for building a successful and sustainable braind
    • The gap between wanting the dream and being willing to do the work
    • The non-negotiable step when it comes to marketing an even mildly successful brand
    • Who David studies and what he's learned from them that has deeply impacted his business (and can impact yours as well)

  • 017: Bestselling Author Jenna McCarthy

Jenna McCarthy is the bestselling author of 15 books in multiple genres. In this incredible interview, you'll discover:

    • The part of the publishing process that Jenna STILL gets nervous about and finds incredibly challenging

    • How Jenna deals with her own "Is this story THAT good? What if people don't like it?" concerns

    • The 10 things you need for a bestseller (you won't believe what #1 and #10 are)

    • Her newest project (which she's self-publishing), why it so greatly excites her and why she chose self-publishing as the approach this time around

    • The reality of a $50,000 advance from a traditional publisher -- how it REALLY breaks down

    • What happens when a historically successful author has a "bad" launch with a traditional publisher versus being self-published

    • The truth about book marketing -- even when you're published by a traditional publishing house

    • The biggest misconception about your pub/launch date (you'll want to know this before that date arrives in your world)

    • Our goals with regard to Jen Sincero (are you listening, Jen?)

  • 016: Immediate Versus Ongoing Publicity

While recently driving between Phoenix and Tucson, I began listening to Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger. One section of it prompted some thoughts around book publicity and why both immediate publicity and ongoing word of mouth are critical to an author's long-term success.

In this episode you will discover:

    • The one-day activity you can easily undertake that will prove how often we promote via word of mouth without even realizing it.
    • Why negative publicity still triggers a response that benefits a product or service
    • The big bonus of self-publishing when it comes to ongoing word of mouth (which you can't take advantage of when you're published by a traditional publishing house)
    • The lifespan of a publicity push for a traditionally published book versus a self-published book
    • Why the long tail of a book launch contains the most potential for opportunity
    • How the implementation of ongoing word of mouth promotion strategies must be approached like sleep-training a baby
    • Why the correlations we tend to draw between super successful products are often quite misleading

  • 015: On Habit

"Is it better to write everyday or to write a certain number of words everyday?"

This is a question a client recently asked, and I immediately knew my answer.

It's often helpful to examine habits we already have (both good and bad) in order to better understand the way in which they become ingrained in our lives to the point that they create a healthy, productive lifestyle.

In this episode, you will discover:

    • Why unreasonable expectations when it comes to new habits never works
    • The "odd" habits of writers Mark Twain, Marcel Proust and Maya Angelou
    • The simple step to get back on course when you fall into old (undesirable) habits

  • 014: Just Choose Already

    EPISODE SUMMARY

Are you having trouble making a choice in your life?

Perhaps it's a seemingly simple choice such as whether or not to put honey or jelly on your peanut butter sandwich.

Perhaps it's more complicated -- which website template or email service provider is the best to spend money on?

Paralysis by analysis -- regardless of how superficial or life-altering the decision may be -- is pervasive and it's likely keeping you from being able to move forward in one or more areas of your writing and publishing career.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL DISCOVER:

    • The truth about the "right" choices
    • Exactly how to make what feels like an impossibly difficult choice so that you can move on with the rest of your to-do list
    • The real reason WHY we don't simply make a choice and what we can learn from it
    • How to learn to love the process of choosing and committing to our choice without fearing that it's the "wrong" choice

  • 013: What's Your Story?

    EPISODE SUMMARY

What's the story your telling YOURSELF about your future as an author?

Whether you want to write full-time, as a side gig, or in order to build your influence and credibility in your field of expertise, it's critical to address the story you tell yourself about your future in this space.

The HOW of writing, publishing and marketing a book can be taught.

What fascinates me is that once people have the HOW the book oftentimes still does not appear.

    Why is that?

It's because of the story the author is telling himself or herself about her potential in this space and how that influences the actions they take and the progress they make.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL DISCOVER:

    • How writing a book and learning to drive a car perfectly mirror each other in terms of mindset challenges
    • Why our 33-Day Book Writing Bootcamp (and similar approaches) are so successful at setting authors' momentum on fire
    • The excuses 90% of people make in order to justify "checking out" from finishing or further promoting their book (and how to stop making them)
    • The HOW of shifting the story (so that it ends in your favor)

  • 012: Getting Past Imposter Syndrome
Today we're talking about Imposter Syndrome, a.k.a. "I feel like a fraud."

Do you want to stop ditching your idea because you feel like an imposter? And stop worrying that people may see you as a "fraud?"

Imposter Syndrome (or some variation thereof) is experienced by nearly every single author at some point in his or her career. In the end, as with so many other negative feelings, it stems from fear. The question is: fear of WHAT?

    In today's episode, you'll discover:

Why the thing you fear is EXACTLY what readers desperately want

The four qualities that actually make you credible to readers

(none is a fancy degree or established tribe of raving fans)

Proof that anyone can shift his or her mindset around imposter syndrome (you'll never guess what award I received as a high school senior)

Two mindsets that set authors up for mediocrity from the get-go

The TRUTH about the importance of impressive credentials

The SIMPLE EXERCISE that will jumpstart your recovery from Imposter Syndrome (and it's something you can do today!)

  • 011: Reasons Why Your Book Isn't A Bestseller - Part 1

There are 4 core reasons why your book isn't (yet) a bestseller. They are:

    • You haven't written it!
    • You skipped over the critical steps thinking they were unimportant
    • Your marketing plan is non-existent or stinks (just being honest!)

With regard to the first reason (your book isn't yet written), if you fall into this category, in all likelihood:

    • You're waiting for a critical moment to get started (when we finish moving, once summer break is over, after the kids start school, once I feel like my story is complete...)
    • You don't know how to get started or what to do once the writing is complete
    • You fear that you don't have the credibility and/or platform to be successful

The truth: these are all different ways of justifying an underlying fear. And the best way to overcome that fear, not just as an author but as a human being, is to address it.

In today's episode, I get honest about these fears, where they come from and how to combat them.

  • 009: WHY are you doing THAT?

I frequently talk to writers about the WHY behind their book concepts. But, it's equally important to get clear on the WHY behind your overall mission at its highest level.

In this episode, you will discover:

-The reason kids have the right idea when they ask WHY over and over again (even though it drives us crazy!)

-How a moment early in Brooke Castillo's career proved the domino effect of each person's unique (and often -unintended) contribution

-The one way your WHY can be out of sync just enough to keep you unsatisfied long-term (and how to fix it)

-Why shows such as X-Factor and America's Got Talent as well as energy-filled weekend seminars create powerful (yet short-lived) motivation
