  • Avenue Red Podcast #105 - Mihail P
Avenue Red hereby welcomes the second coming of Mihail P from Vinica in Macedonia. A rising star in the underground electronic music scene, Mihail's productions are really getting noticed a lot since he did Avenue Red Podcast 075 some 16 months ago, with some top releases in the pipeline to be released throughout this year. The payload of vinyl releases involves two good friends of Avenue Red, with one coming on Paul Rimbaud's Distant Worlds label and also one on Andy Green's Verdant Recordings imprint. Keep a look out for those!
This mix is yet another satisfying selection of futuristic electro and techno that shows Mihail's supreme taste, his discerning ear for a smooth transition and finding winning combinations to create a prime tapestry of deep, grooving electronic sounds, which are also notably close to home with his own production style. We want more from you in the future Mihail, do keep us in mind! :)
"The view you see in the artwork picture is something that inspires me daily, whether I am producing, mixing or listening to music. And while playing/recording this very mix i had this view staring at me all the time.
This mix is about the atmosphere that surrounds us: the environment and our daily routines; the spirit of every town that feels like an intricate machinery where every resident has an important part to play; how we're all connected in some way whether we are aware or not... I want you to feel this mix as moving through the crowd of people, picking up every signal they send and convert it into a sound wave of celestial beats and glacial atmospheres." • Avenue Red Podcast #104 - Paul Rimbaud
The 104th Avenue Red Podcast comes from Paul Rimbaud, a true deep house/techno/electro collector and DJ from Blackheath, South London.
In the summer of last year, Paul was busily setting up his own Distant Worlds label, launching with the "Renegade EP" coming from that ever-increasingly prolific analog synth warrior from Sheffield, John Shima. We are told the label will be sure to feature more works from friends of Avenue Red in the coming months so keep a look out!
Here Mr. Rimbaud lays down a stellar, driving mix of magical, shiny techno & electro sounds that give us a looking glass into his unique, intricate vision for this promising-looking young label.
"I started buying records in 1992 and haven't stopped since. I schooled myself in the hardcore/jungle techno scene and discovered the techno scene through that, searching out the originals of the tunes that were being sampled by the likes of LTJ Bukem and DJ Crystl. The thread that held these genres together for me were the soundscapes. The emotion/dread/foreboding/elation that can be transmitted through pads and synths, through these little machines becomes transcendent. Often based around basic melodies, aligned with simple chord progressions, the whole becomes greater than the sum of it's parts.
For this mix I wanted to concentrate specifically on the sounds of the synths, the pads and atmospherics; the way they would layer and interact with each other as opposed to any kind of rhythmic theme. As such, there are tracks from both sides of the millennium featured, many personal favourites amongst them. I really hope you enjoy listening.
Recorded with an audience of one (the cat) in Blackheath, South London on a Thursday afternoon in October." Paul Rimbaud , January 2018

  • Avenue Red Podcast #103 - Gusev
Avenue Red resident Russian-German selector Gusev is back with a mix of his own personal classics collection. Lots of great tracks that will take the true underground House & Techno heads back to the good times! We have had this mix since 5 months ago and we are very pleased to finally get it out there - there are many great mixes to follow in quick succession from some old Avenue Red favourite DJ's and some newcomers to the series too, so keep a look out in the coming weeks for more underground goodies ;)
"Hello friends, this mix I recorded about half a year ago. Of course one take, vinyl only as always with me. I'm not just a vinyl collector but I'm also mixtape collector and in the mix I've selected many tracks that I've heard in other very good mixes. The mixes and DJ's had a big impact on me, and many of the tracks I played in the mix are legendary for me. I hope you will like the mix. Enjoy!" Dmitry Gusev, January 2018

  • Avenue Red Podcast #102 - Max Hummel
Max Hummel from Wiesbaden, Germany returns for his second contribution to the Avenue Red Podcast with a deep energetic mix, which features some of his own recent productions. This is his first proper techno mix since his amazing podcast for @stephenos1 / Mosaic Records just over a year ago - see here: https://soundcloud.com/stephenos1/mosaic-mix-series-014_max-hummel
"This mix is full with my personal favourite tracks from the past and the present in Techno music! This session reflects my new project which is based on a new futurist journey with classical features. The last track gives a short glimpse about the musical characteristics of this project and what will be coming soon. I'm very happy to be a part of the Avenue Red Podcast series again. Looking forward to hearing more wonderful mixes from this great series which will hopefully follow! Thank you so much Alec for the support of myself alongside all the great underrated/unknown DJ's, producers and music-lovers out there!" Max Hummel, January 2018

  • Avenue Red Podcast #101 - Becks
For the 101st Avenue Red Podcast we present some fresh talent, a mysterious lady known as Becks who is originally from St. Louis, USA but has lived most of her life in Frankfurt, Germany, where her parents originated. Here Becks lays down an atmospheric mixture of electronic music that is very evocative, with smoked-out film noir vibes, a hint of Alice In Wonderland and stark, cold glacial landscapes coming through her selections.
"I'll try to express what drove me to record/select this mix. There is at first my basic perception of music as a pretty unique language, a way of dreaming whilst being awake. To me, recording a mix is about telling a story, yet without the limitations imposed by vocabulary. So I'm trying to invite the listener to follow me, take part in my imagination or follow one's own while merging with the music's emotional landscape. It can oscillate from seriousness to playfulness to yearning to hardness.
The picture I chose for the mix somehow reflects its predominant ambience: a heavy sky with a few rays of sunlight shining through, as an image of longing or hoping, yet not fully clear (thanks to the old, worn photographic film). But still, I find it quite hard to put that into my own words.
To me, music is really important, having the potential of creating an emotional room - but I don't count myself as important in it. I might create parts of it while selecting and mixing, but whoever listens enters the space and shares it." Becks, December 2017

  • Avenue Red Podcast #100 - Hysteric (Mothball Record)
This series has been so much fun to bring to this point, the centenary episode! It has featured some well-known guests but that was never the point. It remains focused on the lesser-knowns, showing that on an avenue near you there are many ace DJ's and artists who can "see red" (meaning they can hear and recognise *quality* music), just like you can.
You don't need to consult a glossy music magazine or hit up a trending music publication to find out what is worth listening to. If you are truly into underground music, you only need to dig for yourself and feed off the underground DJ's/labels/people around you who have got that mad passion, taste and burning desire to curate boss mixtapes and releases. ENTER GEORGE HYSTERIC!
The Melbourne(-and-bred) DJ, music collector and Mothball Record label boss has blown many people away (including us and our mates) with his crazily coherent selections of Italo, disco, synthpop, synthwave, new wave and other interesting oddball variants of music (largely from 20+ years ago). He has got a seriously strong mixing style tailored for segueing old, loosely-timed eclectic music - a technical artform in itself that is very tough to master! George is also an excellent producer, who has officially released only a fraction of his edit works and also has some top materials of his own released on labels like Banoffee Pies, Bordello A Parigi, Public Possession and Edits Du Plaisir among others including his own label.
This exclusive mix is expertly crafted. Be excited. PS. This is available to download in lossless full-res .aiff format - we thought we'd do this because it is the 100th episode. We thank George, the other contributors and of course YOU for bothering to listen.
"This mix was something of a challenge because I hadn’t recorded a ‘pure’ Italo-disco mix in quite some years and had even moved away from it a bit, as although I love and always will love the genre, I had struggled to find fresh Italo tracks that appealed to me personally. This gave me the time to explore and DJ in other genres that maybe I hadn’t given enough time to before.
It’s possible to also see this perhaps in the development and progression of Mothball Record moving away from a strictly Italo-disco label, with some synthwave releases and even one of 90s rave covers during 2017. The heart of Mothball will always be in Italo however, and there are some nice releases planned for 2018.
Over the past few months I invested some time digging through Italian label catalogs on discogs looking for (mostly cheap) Italo records I didn’t previously know... and found quite a few nice surprises. As a result I think I was able to make a pure Italo-disco mix almost entirely free of “the hits”.
I didn't have so much time to edit or produce much lately because I was busy with DJ work and stuff for the label, mostly graphic design and audio restoration. However, I will have a few things out early 2018 - an EP on Bahnsteig 23 and a 7" on a new label, which will feature more downtempo and sample-based stuff. Keep a look out for new the releases and thank you for listening!" George Hysteric, December 2017

  • Avenue Red Podcast #099 - Janne Rasi
We are very pleased to welcome the return of Deep House maestro Janne Rasi from Helsinki, Finland! Janne has got a mad record collection with lots of deep, druggy, moody, hypnotic, melodic House & Techno... and loads of other obscure stuff that we couldn't even think of labelling!
He showcases that diversity and breadth of musical influence very well in this set. He has a crazy ability to set very lucid, dreamy, fantasy-like scenes with his musical selections and flow. As this silky smooth set of tracks shows, his mixing is also truly impeccable. Transcendental audio for the heads with a high-octane brain and deep imagination.
"This mix started taking shape in my head in the summer when I got some hot new wax in my hands. Some tracks were just so good I had to start thinking how to use them in a mix. The result is a combination of recent discoveries and long time favourites.
In the end, I’m quite satisfied with the flow and progression. This was mixed in one shot with three decks at my place in Helsinki, Finland, in July. I’m proud to deliver podcast #99 for Avenue Red." Janne Rasi, September 2017

  • Avenue Red Podcast #098 - Verdant Recordings
Back for his third Avenue Red Podcast mix (and 4th including his contribution to the Avenue Red 1210 sister series), Verdant Recordings takes us on incredible trip away from earth, travelling through some beautiful and strange areas of outer space. This set will dazzle your mind if you let it in. Repeat listening is essential to truly absorb what is on offer here.
"It's always a pleasure doing a mix for Avenue Red and I think I'm up to 4 with this set. Aspiring to keep it interesting, this one is a collection of gentler and alternative vibes for home listening. I hope it tweaks the neurones and ears as intended.
Thanks again to Alec and all the contributors that make Avenue Red one of the more inspiring series for the heads." Andy Green, September 2017

  • Avenue Red Podcast #097 - Tim Boyd
After a little bit of a pause, the Avenue Red engine is back up and running with a full tank of fuel, ready to churn out more mixes from underground heroes that you likely have not heard about before.
This next instalment is a first for us... it took 97 episodes to bring an Aussie to Avenue Red tables, as we welcome Tim Boyd from Sydney, Australia!
Here Tim basks in the sunny Sydney weather and takes inspiration from his surroundings to deliver a super hot mix of delicious, deep melodic house music from his very nice and varied record collection.
"I got into dance music soon after I left high school. I'm 23 now. I took this year off after finishing Uni to put out some of my friends music on a label I've started called Black Wattle. I have two releases in the works with the first coming out around the end of September.
Musically I'm inspired by DJs who play records with passion and take risks. This mix was just one afternoon in my living room in Sydney... I wanted it to be pretty laid back and make people happy and deliver pure sunshine through their speakers/headphones. Here it is, enjoy x" Tim Boyd, September 2017

  • Avenue Red Podcast #096 - Rob Moller
We are proud to welcome the 3rd coming of Newcastle, UK-based Rob Moller to the series. More deepness, smooth operator blends and train-spotter selections. He's like the modern-day Knight Rider... but a Geordie one with (only slightly) different hair and a different car.
"I can't believe this is my third Avenue Red mix. Thanks Alec! I wanted to go back to the deep and dark stuff the podcast is known for and this is what I put together one morning... hopefully it hits the spot." Rob Moller, July 2017
