  • Avenue Red Podcast #094 - Gusev
For his 5th contribution to Avenue Red we welcome back the Saint Petersburg-born, one-of-a-kind record digger/collector/DJ Dmitry Gusev with yet another hot blend of aces.
"Hello friends! This mix was recorded about 3 years ago, but I still really like the music I put together in this particular mix... and now I want to release the mix here on Avenue Red, where I think it finally belongs.
I had no particular idea for this mix. I spontaneously selected 3-4 current tracks from 2014 and the rest are tracks from different decades. But I always say: it does not matter from which decade track comes, only the quality counts.
Here you will find tracks from 1990 to 2014 which all fit together very well. I use many tracks from true Chicago and Detroit legends: Derrick Carter, Dez Andres, Scott Grooves, Kai Alce, Mike Grant, Glenn Underground and many more. Many tracks are personal favourites for many years. I can say this for sure: House music will never die! I think this mix will fit very well to coming summers. This mix like all my mixes was a vinyl only session recorded in one take. Enjoy it. A little later I will post a full Playlist." Dmitry Gusev, June 2017

  • Avenue Red Podcast #093 - Lee Clarke
Milton Keynes-based DJ/artist/events promoter Lee Clarke steps up to the Avenue Red Podcast with a tough, driving, deep mix of House music. Lee promotes and is resident at his own night called Tahanan, which first came on our radar around the time of Avenue Red's inception, with this beast of a line-up https://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?481883 that featured Dudley Strangeways and Michael McLardy who did our 3rd podcast episode (https://soundcloud.com/avenue-red/podcast-003-dudley-strangeways-b2b-michael-mclardy) around that time alongside Tech House heavyweights Terry Francis and Eddie Richards. Lee's Tahanan imprint is also echo'ed on air at Hoxton FM from time-to-time and became a label in February this year with Sek's Drunk Yoga EP. Enjoy the mix everyone, it gets deeper and deeper as it progresses, just how we like it! :D
PS. Lee has kindly provided a tracklist that we will put up after the mix get's to 300 plays.

  • Avenue Red Podcast #092 - Sebastian Markovic
Soon after the excellent 4Eggz, we welcome yet another DJ from Nuremberg in Germany to the Avenue Red series... Sebastian Markovic. Here Sebastian shows true craftsmanship and innovation in putting a set of records together with a tasteful crate digger's selection of deep, summery, tribal and electro fodder. Includes seamless tapestry/German-made quality... you just trust! ;)
"Hey, I'm Sebastian, currently living and playing in Nürnberg, Germany. I've been collecting vinyl for some time now and have the great opportunity to play in venues in and around Nürnberg. Together with a friend we host podcasts and club nights as KEEP IT DEEP. A while ago I was working in the Netherlands and listening to the scene there really opened my mind musically. So I hope with this set I could bring some continuity as well as some surprising tracks to the mix. Thank you for listening!" Sebastian Markovic, May 2017

  • Avenue Red Podcast #090 - Edward Bei
For Avenue Red 090 we present for the first time a DJ from Portugal, Edward Bei (real name Eduardo Vaz), who comes from the town of Famalicão near Braga in the north of the country. Also a graduate student of electronic music production and a keen sonic innovator, here Edward takes us on a trip through all kinds of lo-fi/garagey/deep/dubby House & Techno tunes. The mix flows like a dream and has some distinctly summery overtones.
"I think one of the pleasures in DJ'ing are the little 'storylines' that you can create between two songs, and with the right choices, extend that story through the mix. And at the same time, being open to change the story completely.
I'm from Northern Portugal and I played in cities like Porto, Vila Real and Castelo Branco (where I studied musical production), but the beautiful Lisbon is still missing from my DJ's curriculum vitae. Lately I've been mainly focused on production. I started making music from techno to ambient and experimental music under the name Blue Hand. Currently I'm working on my first releases around deep house and dub techno, and I think this mix reflects much of my inspiration.
My influences started at the age of 15 with artists like Louie Vega and Frankie Knuckles. Nowadays I get much inspiration from artists like Fred P, Asok, Adham Zahran, Sven Weisemann and many more. And, of course, I have to include in my list these great podcasts with such great selections. Avenue Red has been giving me so much good food to my ears over the last few years, so I'm very glad be a part of it now :)" Edward Bei, May 2017

  • Avenue Red Podcast #089 - Simon (Backdrop)
Stepping up for this fresh Avenue Red addition is yet another local Newcastle lad, Simon Leeks, who is co-boss of Newcastle outfit Backdrop. Simon and co have put on some monster events up here over the last couple of years, with some ace guests including Amir Alexander, Jane Fitz, Levon Vincent, Ethyl & Flori and Tama Sumo b2b Prosumer (All Night Long) among other noteworthy bookings.
Simon has used this mix as an opportunity to make a sort of "megamix" out of THE underground cult techno release of 2016: Convextion's 2845 LP. He makes utility of this double 12" album as a planet of spacey futuristic sounds around which he throws into orbit some other spacey, deep and vibrant Techno/Electro inclusions. It makes for a very satisfying, trippy listen overall and a great package through which fans of 2845 can enjoy the album all over again in a fresh context.
"I'd sent Alec two previous mixes, both of which were not appropriate for this podcast. Seeing as I run a fairly firm techno night, Backdrop, along with Fraser Pearston, Hester Cheuk and Joseph Clarke, I found this mix tough. However, I also found that the drive it gave me to search for tunes outside of my prime selection area/comfort zone to be really inspiring.
I'd also like to say that we have a close marra, Sean Hodgson, currently laid up in hospital and this mix was done with him in mind. Thanks to Alec for putting this out, and you for listening - enjoy!" Simon Leeks, April 2017
