In this episode of the Catholic Link podcast, Fr. Rob talks about Averroism, a school of medieval philosophy based on the application of the works of 12th-century Andalusian philosopher Averroes, a commentator on Aristotle, in 13th-century Latin Christian scholasticism. Fr. Rob explains that Averroeism understands religious truths as distinct from other "fill in the blank" truths one can think of. However, this is not the case. Truth cannot be applied to one case and not another. Truth has to be true across many disciplines. If there appears to be a discrepancy between religious truths, like scripture for example, and truths about outer space, one must not dismiss the religious truth as irrelevant. Rather, one must work hard to find a way to reconcile the two together. Afterall, all that we can know and observe originated in one God. St. Thomas Aquinas wrote against Averroeism in his book De unitate intellectus contra Averroistas.
Listen to the previous episode where Fr. Rob talks about how one can pray the Rosary better. The Rosary at its heart is a meditative prayer, focuses on the life of Jesus and Mary based in scripture. Fr. Rob suggests that all those who pray the Rosary should consider meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary while they pray.
