Gaius and Jackson dive into the 2003 heist action film The Italian Job, which celebrates a 20th anniversary milestone! Directed by F. Gary Gray, the film is an American remake of the 1969 British film of the same name but with with an original story. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, Jason Statham, Seth Green, Mos Def, and Donald Sutherland, the movie follows a motley crew of thieves who plan to steal gold from a former associate who double-crossed them. The pair get into the film’s more practical and realistic action scenes that made the movie stand out from others released at the time, using the real actors to perform most of the car stunts, the controversy surrounding Edward Norton being forced to do the movie, how the movie helped bring in a revival of the heist film, the film becoming a surprise hit when it was released in the summer of 2003, and if the film still holds up today!

It’s a bit of a switch up this week as the pick isn’t coming from Owen or Gaius but from our very own Jackson Pye who is popping in from the main show with his pick, Killer Joe. Released in 2011, the film is directed by William Friedkin with a screenplay by Tracy Letts, which is based on his 1993  play of the same name. The movie stars Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon, and Thomas Haden Church, and it follows a young man whose debt puts his life in danger so he turns to putting a hit out on his evil mother in order to collect the insurance. The trio explore many aspects of the film, including a few controversial scenes that have turned the film into a bit of a cult favorite. They also dive into the performances, issues with its NC-17 rating and how this began a series of films that began McConaughey reshaping his career as a respected actor.

With Fast X opening this weekend, the Back To The Blockbuster crew is revisiting the entire Fast & Furious franchise beginning with 2001’s The Fast and the Furious which takes us all the way to 2021’s Fast Nine. Since the Fast Saga is all about family, Gaius and Jackson expanded on the crew a bit this week by inviting a special guest on as the pair is joined by Ty Ippolito who is a true fan of the Fast franchise. It’s a fun revisit down memory lane as we prepare for the latest entry which is said to be the beginning of the end of one of the most lucrative franchises in film history.

Gaius and Jackson get into the second trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and the first trailer for Dune: Part Two, which are arguably two of the most anticipated films of the year. The duo also takes a look at the Gran Turismo trailer as well as discuss more productions that have gone dark due to the ongoing writers strike, including Daredevil: Born Again, the final season of Stranger Things and MCU’s Blade. Gaius and Jackson look back at Iron Man for its 15th anniversary which wasn’t only the start of Robert Downey Jr.’s run as the titular hero and his origin story, but also the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film starts Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow, Leslie Bibb and Shaun Toub. The duo dive into different aspects of the film including casting, the action sequences, performances, and plot, as well as it’s place as one of the best comic book origin films to hit the big screen. In addition to this, the pair also discuss if it felt like this was the beginning of a universe that has expanded across so many films today.
