THE ONE FAILURE THAT KILLS ALL TEAM PROGRESS…..and how to solve it.
Perhaps the most important thing Scrum teaches us to do is make and keep small commitments with consistency.
On these points, I’ve spoken many times but I want to reveal that of all the human challenges I encounter in teams, it is this. Why can’t people keep their word?
-This problem exists everywhere – within our projects and beyond
-Talk is cheap, and true action and fidelity to our commitments is rare
-We all do, but it is a failure of great proportion that place low value on our word
-Notice this week how many people have to be excused for missing a promise AFTER the deadline has passed. Notice how many people will even cancel or call in sick to avoid being accountable. Among the root causes are:
-Overpromising
-Depleted energy /poor time and energy management
-Lack of alignment between passion and work
-Poor communications and unclear expectations
-unaddressed blockers
-lack of urgency
-Overwhelm
In all of these cases, there are simple solutions. One is to ask for help, another is to continuously communicate movement toward a small goal. Proper sprint planning and standups should help, but a funny thing happens. People would rather be seen as late (and subsequently unreliable) than as needing help or renegotiating arrangements.
There is another way. Rally the team around their group and individual identity. What do you want to be known for? Ask people and they’ll tell you – dependability, trustworthy, accountable. Hold them to this higher ideal, and the commitment to the smaller deadlines will follow.

-Across the world, people are leaving – or thinking of leaving – their jobs and careers in stunning numbers.
-Is the solution in Agile?
-Perhaps because of the pandemic, people are waking up and lighting up to a different future.
-It may be the case that they’re realizing that what they had been told was an unthinkable model of work is actually quite doable, with little or no downward impact on productivity.
-People have enjoyed less commute time, more family time, more choice in how and where they work.
-So how do we plug the drain?
-compensation is not the only consideration.
-flex hours and remote work play a heavy factor. People want to work where they want when they want. For too long, companies have rewarded butts-in-seats, long hours, and always-on engagement. Now that they’re finding they have options, they want to tip the scale back in their favour; and once the veil has been lifted, it’s hard to close it again
-Increasingly important is supporting side projects and future hustle – If pensions and benefits are slowly eroding over time, people want to feel like they have an option to design income streams and passion projects for the uncertain future.
How Can Agile Help?
-Whatever we do, we must invest but invest with intention. If we throw money, promotions, and flex time at a select few fence-jumpers, we have to be prepared to do so for all. And that investment cannot be blind – we have to be clear about what we expect it to DO.
-Ultimately, we want happier people. An engaged workforce simply delivers better results for the end customer.
-We cannot afford to wait months or years for a definitive response. we need to communicate early and start LISTENING to needs – and implementing experiments and proposals so we can stem the exit
-Leaders must admit that change is here, it is time for an adjustment and that people are your finest asset
-We cannot see this as a stop-gap measure. We must insist on cultural change, on sustaining environments for people that not only attract the best talent but create enviable cultures that place the wellness and happiness of people at least as high as that of the customer

One of the critical pieces of leadership is strength – strength of character, ideas
We’re never taught how to be strong so strong has become a bad word, associated with bullies or pushinesss or anger or worse
Strength means the ability to manage and control the thoughts and emotions that launch in response to injurious words or actions. It means the ability to stay centred and unswayed. It means resolve and grit. it means internal certainty. No MBA and no certification will teach you that.
-Lash back when we feel offended, shame
-Criticize in order to feel big, strong
-Hate on the ideas of others – this one is huge in 2021
-Seek Attention and approval
-Apologize for who they are, bow to the crowd

The secret to boundless energy and consistent forward momentum is to stay hungry every day. Keep reaching, stretching, learning, and acting as if you’re starting from zero. Assume you know nothing, and nothing is guaranteed.
