Here in Australia, there is something called the “Tall poppies syndrome”

which I see as the tallest poppy gets snipped back to fit with the size of the others. If someone is wealthy, successful or prominent they will often be the subject of envy, mockery and public “cutting”.

It can be things like downplaying success “well you got lucky”, jealousy, pointing out flaws, exclusions from certain groups, and sly passive-aggressive remarks.

This attitude does make having ambitions and being successful or wealthy in my country somewhat less accepted than in other western countries. It seems like everyone wants you to do well, just not as well as them, and certainly not better than them.

The “tall poppy syndrome” Is deeply embedded in our culture, I’ve experienced it myself many times as well as seen it with my clients, it takes a great deal of resilience, confidence and support to move past it.

And even then, it will follow you. It stops a lot of people, especially women before they even get a chance to begin as it feels “safer” to stay broke.

On the flip side, judgement and envy is actually what can block you from receiving all that you desire.

Coach vs mentor, what's the big deal ….?

An online conversation was opened up this week in one of the groups I'm a part of for women in business. and it invited some really great open discussion about these two terms “mentor /coach” and what they mean, or how we define them.

I got my first 1-star review ….

So, I’m writing a new sales page for the book, time to level up since book 2 is due to be released this year.

And I'm getting all my ducks in a row, collecting testimonials, collating book selfies … all the fun stuff. and in that list of possible testimonials to use, I came across * cue shock and horror … my first 1-star review.

“see, Shona you've made it, this means you’re a proper author now” I whispered to myself

One bad review in perspective to the hundreds of incredible, testimonials, reviews, comments, and shout outs. I’ll take that any day.

So, I’ve finally made it, I got my first bad review ….

And guess what, it didn't kill me

In this episode of the podcast, I'm being a bit reflective and sentimental, looking back on the life I've created and the little girl version of my who dreamt that it would one day be a “thing” to be a woman in business creating her own rules…

You see, Ive never been an “or” kind of girl ….

I'm more of an “and” type

So, as I kid I wanted to grow up and become a magazine editor, and a film director, and a radio host, and a lawyer, and a graphic designer, and a photographer, and a model, and a fashion designer, and a flight attendant, and a marketing expert, and an author and a CEO

One career path was never going to be enough for me

Waiting around for someone see to give me permission, to choose me … was never going to work for me

I gave myself permission

I choose MYSELF

And here we are today… I might not have officially ticked off every career I dreamed abut as an ambitious six-year-old, but I now realise all the time I spent playing “magazine editor” doing photo shoots for my sister or rounding up my friends to make our own detective movie on my mum's cam corder …

It all leads to here… today,

where I am paid to show up in the world and create, inspire, empower, do be and have ALL of this.

When my workday involves writing my next best selling book, creating beautiful graphics and ebooks for clients, one on one coaching, and business consulting, meetings, business lunches, events and yes even photoshoots that are now my new normal

I'm tempted to want to pinch myself because I “don't believe it”

But the truth is, I do believe it, I choose it, I decided it, I took inspired action every single day and I am so grateful to still every day to call this life mine.

6 year old me, who dreamed of “and” instead of “or” would be so proud.

So give yourself permission

Choose YOU

Create that dream job, that lifestyle you crave

If people can make 6 figures selling pictures of their feet online, there are no limits to what you can do babe

So go get it.
