This week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, we’re discussing our late season game plan to get bucks on the ground. Parker and Mike are joined by Mike’s brother, Heath Pike, as they talk about how strategies change as the season progresses. Mike and Heath are recording from deer camp in North Alabama, but Parker is coming at us from Florida. After hunting in “the sunshine state” for one day, it’s become clear why the non-resident deer license is so cheap. It may be a gamble, but with a cheap tag, it’s hard to pass up. The conversation turns to the topic of dog hunting in Florida, as Parker tells us about some interesting encounters he has had with some of the local dog hunters on this piece of public land.

Wherever you are hunting, late season in the south can be a beneficial time to be in the woods. Concentrating on late food sources and new bedding areas could be the golden ticket. Or you might just get lucky on an evening sit on a green field. Whatever your tactics, we wish you good luck and a happy new year.

This week Parker and his buddy Cody Phillips are recapping one of the best “Rutcation” hunting trips that Parker has had the opportunity to take. Parker and his dad loaded up the kayaks, the bass tracker, and their camping gear last week, in hopes of getting on two respectable Alabama public land bucks. Everything fell perfectly into place, the stars aligned, and they completed their goals. Parker goes into detail about the tactics that were used, and how he believes that using “beast” tactics is what killed these bucks.

These two bucks are a great testament to the phrase “Hard Work Pays Off”. Pre Season scouting, cyber scouting with OnX, & knowing the right time to be in the woods is imperative to being successful on high pressured public land. You can get lucky every once in a while, but to consistently kill good bucks is truly something that takes a lot of dedication. Hopefully this podcast inspires and motivates you to get out there and make it happen in your own neck of the woods.

As the rut gets closer, Parker and Mike talk about their preparations to make the most of this magical time of year. The morning of this recording, Parker shot a buck that was showing definite signs of a rutting whitetail. You’re not only going to get to hear the story of this buck, but also what he plans to do with that intel to help him make the most of his last remaining buck tag.

This was an especially fun episode because Parker had some public land kayak hunting success on the archery opener in Alabama the day before we recorded. In this Southern Ground podcast, we’re recapping our first hunt of the season in Kentucky. Even though we came home successful, it doesn’t mean that it was an easy trip. Sometimes bad things will inevitably happen, and this trip was no exception. We’re going to talk about those tough moments, as well as the high points of the trip, and breakdown what we learned from our mistakes. Deer season has officially kicked off… well for some anyways! This week’s episode we’re talking with Ben Harrison about his recent success in Tennessee on a great velvet buck. Now, this was the first ever velvet hunt in Tennessee so there were some obvious challenges that Ben talks about. However, he accepted the challenge, made a game plan, and ended up arrowing the buck he was after. I think you’re going to enjoy this awesome success story.

Not only does Michael have a large collection of public land bucks on the wall, he’s also kept a detailed journal of every hunt from 1988 to now. It’s surreal as you read through his public land encounters throughout the years, and even more impressive that he can tell you the location and date of almost every single successful hunt in the journal.
