Drew understands that a quality call is necessary for the turkey woods. As an Alabama resident, he has been hooked on turkey hunting for over 20 years. At an early age, Drew knew that he wanted to chase these birds for the rest of his life. In this episode the guys talk about the passion behind Drew’s business, and how that passion is the driving force for moving forward.

This week, Southern Ground is joined by National BHA (Backcountry Hunters & Anglers) board member, Jeff Jones. Jeff served as the Southeast chapter president for years before joining the national board just recently. BHA is a national organization that is committed to protecting our public lands. Jeff gives a brief rundown on what BHA is, and talks about some of the current projects they are working on. However, perhaps one of the big ticket items is the bill S.47, otherwise known as the “Natural Resources Management Act”. The conversation revolves around some of the sections of this bill that will directly affect our own public lands here in the south.

Southern Ground headed to the South Georgia swamps in search of wild hogs last weekend. Every year, saddle hunters from all over the US meet up for an event known as "Saddlepalooza". We camp out, eat good food, show off our gear, and sometimes we even chase a few pigs around the woods. The hunting is really second to the good food and fellowship. This week, Parker is joined once again by the brains behind the operation, Greg Godfrey. They talk about some of the highlights of the trip, and reminisce on the good times shared by all at camp.

Our friend, Nathan Unger of The Whitetail Guru, wanted to do an episode with Parker about having a very successful Alabama season, and was gracious enough to let us use the same episode for our feed. This week on Southern Ground, we’re joined by Mr. Flinginairos himself, Jared Shaffer. As a West Virginia resident, Jared understands what it’s like to be a hardcore whitetail hunter in an area where the deer density is low, the bag limits are liberal, and the terrain is brutal. Instead of making excuses, Jared combats tough hunting with remaining mobile and has been extremely successful in doing so. In this episode, we go into detail with Jared on some of the mobile hunting tactics he has put into practice in order to consistently get on good bucks each season on both public and private ground. This season has been one to remember for Jared, as he was able to put a good buck on the ground in 3 different states.

In other news, Mike is still working hard to fill a buck tag on Alabama public land. He tells us about a few close encounters he has had, as well as a miss last week on a big buck that will haunt him for awhile. To add to the list of disappointments from this week, Parker tells us about how he destroyed his kayak in an “automobile accident”. If you’re a faithful listener, you know how devastating this is. Hopefully, in time, the mishaps of this week will be behind us and we can move on with our lives.

This week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, we’re discussing our late season game plan to get bucks on the ground. Parker and Mike are joined by Mike’s brother, Heath Pike, as they talk about how strategies change as the season progresses. Mike and Heath are recording from deer camp in North Alabama, but Parker is coming at us from Florida. After hunting in “the sunshine state” for one day, it’s become clear why the non-resident deer license is so cheap. It may be a gamble, but with a cheap tag, it’s hard to pass up. The conversation turns to the topic of dog hunting in Florida, as Parker tells us about some interesting encounters he has had with some of the local dog hunters on this piece of public land.

Wherever you are hunting, late season in the south can be a beneficial time to be in the woods. Concentrating on late food sources and new bedding areas could be the golden ticket. Or you might just get lucky on an evening sit on a green field. Whatever your tactics, we wish you good luck and a happy new year.

Thank you for tuning in to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. This week Parker and his buddy Cody Phillips are recapping one of the best “Rutcation” hunting trips that Parker has had the opportunity to take. Parker and his dad loaded up the kayaks, the bass tracker, and their camping gear last week, in hopes of getting on two respectable Alabama public land bucks. Everything fell perfectly into place, the stars aligned, and they completed their goals. Parker goes into detail about the tactics that were used, and how he believes that using “beast” tactics is what killed these bucks.

These two bucks are a great testament to the phrase “Hard Work Pays Off”. Pre Season scouting, cyber scouting with OnX, & knowing the right time to be in the woods is imperative to being successful on high pressured public land. You can get lucky every once in a while, but to consistently kill good bucks is truly something that takes a lot of dedication. Hopefully this podcast inspires and motivates you to get out there and make it happen in your own neck of the woods.

Welcome to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast and thanks for tuning in! On this episode, Parker and Michael are recapping their Alabama seasons so far, and discussing the realities of hunting on public land. The season has been very different for both Parker & Michael. They go into detail about some of the expectations they had going into the season, and how they have evolved as the season has progressed. Hunting on public land is a different ball game. Not only do you have to outsmart the deer, but you also have to outsmart other hunters. It’s a harsh reality, but it’s what makes you keep coming back for more.

As the rut gets closer, Parker and Mike talk about their preparations to make the most of this magical time of year. The morning of this recording, Parker shot a buck that was showing definite signs of a rutting whitetail. You’re not only going to get to hear the story of this buck, but also what he plans to do with that intel to help him make the most of his last remaining buck tag.
