Welcome to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. If this is your first time listening, you started on a great episode! This week we’re talking to Locke Wheeler of Skre Gear, The Progression series, Louisiana Bowhunter… a man with many hats! During the interview we talk about Skre Gear, a performance hunting apparel company, which Locke plans to help bring into the Southeastern US. If you haven’t heard of Skre you can check them out at skregear.com. Locke’s 2018 fall hunting season has gotten off to a great start, with trips to Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, and his home state of Louisiana. All of these trips are a part of a new video project that Locke has taken on called “The Progression Series”. This series highlights the progression of the season, as well as the hunter. You’ll also get to hear the story of a great buck that Locke was fortunate to take this year on one of his many hunting adventures.
A shameless plug for Southern Ground! Parker had another successful week in the woods on his first buck of the Alabama season. We could tell you all about it, but you could just go watch it all unfold on the Sportsmen’s Nation Youtube channel.

We’re pumped that you’re listening to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. This is normally the part of the write up where we would tell you about something really strategic that we learned about hunting southern whitetails. However, that’s not the case with this one. In this episode we’re just hanging out at deer camp with our friends from The Southern Outdoorsmen. We talk about the challenges that we faced during the week on some very highly pressured public land, and some of our plans to work around all of the pressure. Other than that, it’s just a bunch of worn out hunting buddies shooting the bull, swapping hunting stories, & telling a bunch of lies. We’ve got a lot of great video content coming down the pipe so make sure you’re subscribed to the Sportsmen’s Nation channel on YouTube to keep up with it.
Topics Discussed: High Pressure Public Land Mike’s side gig as a stripper Tyler has a weak stomach Jacob & Parker start the “Pocket Deer Club” Swamp Buck Bedding
Applications: Life is better when you have hunting buddies.

Thank you for tuning in to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, your source for whitetail hunting stories and tactics in the south. This week we are diving deep into the subject of thermal winds, and how they can be used to maximize your time in the woods. Thermals are not something you would normally hear discussed in depth, but for us they have completely revolutionized the way that we hunt. We invited a fellow TheHuntingBeast.com member and Alabama native, Nathan Protz, on the show to discuss how he has learned to use thermals to determine his hunting locations on public land, as well as how he sees deer use thermals in their bedding and travel patterns.
This was an especially fun episode because Parker had some public land kayak hunting success on the archery opener in Alabama the day before we recorded. This was his first day hunting from the new Tethrd Mantis saddle, and the first blood drawn with the New Breed Archery GX2. If you like a good DIY public land hunting story, you’ll enjoy hearing about this hunt.
Topics Discussed: Thermals Buck Bedding Thermal Tunnels Hunting Beast Tactics Access Public Land
Applications: Using milkweed as an indicator to find out what the thermals are doing. Pay attention to your falling thermals while accessing your spots in the morning. Pay attention to rising thermals while accessing in the afternoon.

We’re talking about scouting, gear prep, access & hunting locations that we think will help you make the most of your early season hunting.
This week we’re announcing the winner of the giveaway that we did with GoWild. Make sure you listen to the whole episode to find out if you’re the lucky winner! Thanks for listening!
In this Southern Ground podcast, we’re recapping our first hunt of the season in Kentucky. Even though we came home successful, it doesn’t mean that it was an easy trip. Sometimes bad things will inevitably happen, and this trip was no exception. We’re going to talk about those tough moments, as well as the high points of the trip, and breakdown what we learned from our mistakes. Hunting out of state can be a huge learning curve, especially on public land. Hopefully you’ll be able to hear our story, learn from our mistakes, and be successful on your next out of state hunt!
This trip was also documented on our YouTube vlog on the Sportsmen’s Nation channel. We would love it if you would check that out and subscribe to the channel. If you do subscribe and comment on one of the videos in the Kentucky series, you’ll be entered to win a Premium membership to OnX maps!
Deer season has officially kicked off… well for some anyways! This week’s episode we’re talking with Ben Harrison about his recent success in Tennessee on a great velvet buck. Now, this was the first ever velvet hunt in Tennessee so there were some obvious challenges that Ben talks about. However, he accepted the challenge, made a game plan, and ended up arrowing the buck he was after. I think you’re going to enjoy this awesome success story.
We also got the opportunity to have Brad Luttrell, of GoWild, co-hosting with Parker during the intro. It’s always a pleasure to speak with Brad, and this week we announced how you can have a chance to win a $100 credit in the GoWild store during the month of September. In addition to GoWild’s giveaway, we’re going to throw in a one year premium membership for OnX maps.
In the south you have deer hunters, and then you have legends like Michael & Kat Perry. They’re almost in a division of their own when it comes to hunting public land in Alabama, and their gigantic trophy room backs that up. We got the opportunity to sit down with them, surrounded by over 20 years worth of hunting memories, and hear some stories, strategies and tactics they have used to run their taxidermy bill up each and every year. Not only does Michael have a large collection of public land bucks on the wall, he’s also kept a detailed journal of every hunt from 1988 to now. It’s surreal as you read through his public land encounters throughout the years, and even more impressive that he can tell you the location and date of almost every single successful hunt in the journal. Thanks for tuning into Southern Ground. Enjoy the show!
This week you bowhunters are in for a treat! Episode 15 finds us hanging out at the New Breed Archery headquarters in Fultondale, Alabama, and we’re talking to the founder of New Breed, Mr. Kyle Null. An engineer by trade, Kyle tells us the history of the company and why he believes that New Breed is the best in the business in the areas of innovation and customer service. Kyle is also no stranger to hunting big southern whitetails. Our conversation leads us to some great and memories from some of his successful hunts across the south, as well as a plains game hunt in Africa. New Breed’s tag line “No Hype. Just Hunt” is definitely one that comes with big responsibility, and in this episode you’ll see why and how they are living up to it every day.
If you want to know more about New Breed Archery or see some of the awesome bows in their lineup, check them out at www.newbreedarchery.com. Thanks for listening!
Thanks for tuning into another episode of the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. As September quickly approaches, us whitetail freaks can’t seem to shake the anticipation. In this episode, the whole Southern Ground crew sits down and talks about our goals for the 2018 season, and discuss how we plan to accomplish those goals this year.
This is an episode that includes a little bit of everything: scouting, wind based hunting strategy, family priorities, filming a successful hunt & much more.
Thanks for listening to Episode 13 of the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. This week we’re talking all about filming your hunting adventure, with Ben Davis of Sawbriar Outdoors. Ben has seen some recent success on his YouTube channel, with a couple of his videos even going viral. However, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t faced some challenges as well. We talk through some of those obstacles, as well as some of the rewards that have come from capturing his hunts on camera.
Ben also shares with us that the reason he films is because he wants to inspire the next generation of outdoorsmen and women. We’re looking forward to seeing where Ben goes in his outdoor career, but we can guess that it’s only going to get better!
