China's top sports authorities have recently organized a series of educational activities for their participating athletes and coaches in a bid to strengthen their capabilities to handle questioning from different media.

Wen Wen is the deputy director-general of the Press and Publicity office of the General Administration of Sport of China.

"Since early childhood, these young athletes have been dedicated to professional training in a relatively blocked environment. In many cases, they've been found to have trouble in properly expressing themselves. They are unaware what the media expects to learn from them. Today, they would not only need to compete in the games but have to exhibit their sound morale. So we believe a training session is necessary for them."

A number of senior journalists with the China Sports Daily are responsible for giving lectures. The training sessions mainly consist of four parts, including general information about Asian Games, the tactics on how to deal with media relations, proper application of social media, as well as the appropriate etiquette to be implemented in such a big sports event.

During the speech, lecturers also interpreted the most important do's and don'ts using a great amount of previous real life examples.

Cao Yong, director of new media center with the China Sports Daily, is one of the lecturers.

"Despite wether you are probably a famous athlete or a new face, Chinese athletes should at least avoid speaking to reporters in an aroused state upon achieving good results in the competition. Meanwhile, they are also taught to avoid giving journalists the cold shoulder particularly if they lose a game."

According to Cao Yong, athletes and their coaches also need to simulate both interviewees and journalists alternatively in order to become familiar with the process.

Ye Zhengnan, the leader of Chinese gymnastics team for the Asian Games, led his team to join the lecture.

"The lectures organized by the General Administration of Sport are helpful. How to tackle media relations also brings to light a striking resemblance in the mental aspect and overall qualities of our athletes. We expect they would enjoy the spotlight and exhibit their charm at any occasion."

China is sending the largest delegation to Incheon with 899 athletes. Around 70-percent of these athletes will be new participants to the game. From weightlifting to wushu, and rowing to rugby sevens, the 17th Incheon Asian Games will showcase elite Asian talent in 28 Olympic and eight non-Olympic sports from this coming Friday, or September 19th to October 4th.
