Chapter 1: Prince Zigfried
Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a Prince.
His name was Zigfried, and he was very unhappy.
His father, the King, had died, and since then, everyone in the palace had forgotten how to smile.
Without his father, Zigfried thought he would never feel happy again.
Every day, Zigfried sat at the window in his room in the palace, looking at the birds in the trees.
"How can they sing and fly so free? They must not feel like me."
His servant, Ozlowe, tried to make the prince smile by telling him jokes or doing funny tricks for him.
But the Prince would not smile.
"I know you love me Ozlowe, but I cannot smile. My heart is broken."
Ozlowe would not give up.
"Let's go for a walk, good Prince.Maybe we can find something outside which will make you happy."
"If you wish Ozlowe, but I don't think there's anything that can make me happy."
Ozlowe put on his hunting cap, and he took his crossbow.
He enjoyed hunting and he hoped to catch a bird or a rabbit for the Prince.
They walked through the forest until they came to a lake.
On the lake, there was a beautiful white swan.
It had a gold crown on its head, that only Princesses wear.
The swan swam towards the prince and looked into his eyes.
The swan's eyes were so sad that Prince Zigfried felt sorry for it.
"Here is a creature which feels worse than I do. But why do you have that crown on your head?"
The swan opened its wings and cried out.
Ozlowe had his crossbow in his hands.
He wanted to shoot the swan.
"I'll get that swan for you.Prince. Just one minute."
"Ozlowe, no!"
Before Ozlowe could shoot, a magic owl flew from a tree and took Ozlowe's cap off his head.
This cast a spell on him, and he was turned to stone.
The Prince did not understand.
"Ozlowe, what has happened to you?Speak to me!"
He looked back at the lake.
The swan was gone.
"Everything I do goes wrong. This must have happened because of me!"
"If only Ozlowe were here! There is nothing good in my life any more".
Zigfried's mother came to see him that night.
She had something important to say.
"Zigfried, soon you will be eighteen years old. You must take your father's place as King. I am having a ball on your birthday so that you may choose a wife, and I will invite all the princesses from the other kingdoms."
"But I do not wish to marry,Mother. I do not love anyone."
"You will learn to love someone.First, you must stop thinking of yourself."
"If this will make you happy, I'll do it, Mother."
"It is not for my happiness that Iam doing this. It is for yours, and all the other people in this land. You see, love is more powerful than we know. Without it, you will not be a great King."
His mother left him.
He sat at the window, thinking of what she had said.
He wanted to love someone with all his heart, but he didn't know who it would be.

In my opinion, the most important thing when choosing a hotel for an international conference is the meeting room or' rooms.
For example, you may need a large room where everyone can be together for keynote speeches or presentations and smaller meeting rooms for informal group discussions.
Then,if people are coming from different countries, you need to find out about rooms for them to stay in.
They should be spacious and comfortable, and have facilities for using e-mail and laptops, as people have to keep in touch with their offices or headquarter seven when they're away.
My next point is facilities for hotel guests-things like a bar, a good quality restaurant, preferably offering local food, and fitness and sports centres.
These are important because delegates need to be able to relax after a long day of meetings and get to know each other in informal situations.
Finally, for an international conference where delegates are coming from different countries, it can be very useful to choose a hotel that has good transport connections with the nearest airport and/or places of interest.

The Phantom of the Opera by Jennifer Basset
原文
Chapter 10: Madame Gigy visits the Persian
For weeks, all Paris talked about that night at the Opera.
Everybody asked questions, but nobody knew the answers.
Where was Christine Daae? Where was the Vicome de Chagny?
Were they alive, or dead? And the Phantom of the Opera …?
Some weeks after that famous night, Madame Giry went out one afternoon to a small house near the Rivoli gardens.
She went in and up the stairs to some rooms at the top of the house.
The Persian open the door.
Madam, God looked at him.
"My friend, you know the answers. Please tell me. Are they alive or dead?"
"Come in,"the Persian said quietly.
They sat down on some chairs by the window, and looked out across the Rivoli gardens.
"Yes," the Persian said slowly, "The Phantom is dead now. He did not want to live any longer. I saw his body three days ago, and because of that, I can talk to you about him. He cannot kill me now."
"So the Phantom was really a man? " Madame Giry asked.
"Yes, his name was Erik. That was not his real name, of course. He was born in France, but I knew him in Persia. He was a famous builder and I worked with him there. For a time I was his friend, but not for long. When he came to Paris, I came after him – I wanted to watch him. He was a very clever, very dangerous man. He could be in two, or three, places at the same time. He could be in one place, and his voice could come from another place. He could do many clever things with ropes and mirrors, and secret doors. You see, he helped to build the Opera House. He built secret passages underground, and his secret house on the lake. He could not live in the outside world, because of his terrible, ugly face. Unhappy Erik! We can feel sorry for him,Madame Giry. He was so clever... and so ugly.People screamed when they saw his face. And so he lived this strange life - Half man – Half phantom. But he was a man, in the end. He wanted a woman's love. He stopped.
And Madame Giry asked quietly, "And Christine Daae and VicomteRaoul? What happened to them?"
The Persian smiled."Ah yes! What happened to young Raoul and the beautiful Christine...? Who knows."
Nobody in Paris ever saw Raoul and Christine again.
Perhaps they took a train to the north, and lived a quiet happy life together there.
Perhaps Christine's wonderful voice is still singing, somewhere in the cold and beautiful mountains of Norway.
Who knows.

We're having a debate on advertising Thursday evening, and I have to take part.
That's interesting. I should like to hear what people think about advertising.
What's there to say? We must have advertising, mustn't we?
Why?
Well,we wouldn't know what there was to buy if we didn't have advertisements.
Yes,that's true, up to a point. Advertisements provide information that we need. If someone has produced a new article, naturally the seller wants to tell us about it.
Yes,and the advertisements tell us which product is the best.
Do they? I don't think so. Every manufacturer says that his product is the best,or at least tries to give the impression. Only one can be the best, so the others are misleading, aren't they?
Well,in a way, I suppose, but we don't have to believe them, do we?
Are you saying that advertisements aren't effective?
I don't think that intelligent businessmen would spend millions of dollars on advertising if nobody believes the advertisements, do you?
Perhaps not, but after all, it's their money that they're spending.
Is it? I think not. The cost of advertising is added to the price of the article.
You and I and all the other people who buy the article pay for the advertising.
Well,I suppose we get something for our money-some information.
Yes, but don't forget it's often misleading information, and sometimes harmful.
Harmful?
What about advertisements designed to persuade young people to smoke cigarettes? Wouldn't you say they're harmful?
You've given me a lot to think about. I'm quite looking forward to the debate now!

So Mr. Brown, this is your bed, and as you can see, there are three other beds in the ward. Have you got everything you need?
Yes,nurse, I think so. I followed the hospital's advice and I've only brought a few belongings with me.
Good, you can see the reasons why we ask you to do that. The cupboard is really very small.
Yes.Nurse, can you tell me what the visiting hours are?
Yes,of course. They're in the afternoon from 2:30 to 4:30 and in the evening from 7:00 to 8:00. But remember that only two people can see you at the same time.
I see. What other rules are there?
Yes.We start pretty early. We wake you at 6:00 and breakfast is at 8:00; Lunch is at noon; there's tea at 3:30 and supper is at 6:00.
Oh,that's very different from what I've been used to. You'd better tell me therest of the rules here.
Yes.Well, you can see the no smoking sign. We don't allow smoking in the wards, and the same goes for alcohol. However, if you do need to smoke, there are special lounges.
Oh, I don't smoke, so it doesn't affect me.
Good.
真好。
