W:Let’s go to Greens. It’s just around the corner.
M:Okay.
Text 2
W:Hi, Stephen, guess who I saw at the city library? Andy Clarkes — the leading actor in The Good Lawyer — the famous TV series.
M:What was he doing there? His popularity has slipped since the final season of the show.
Text 3
W: It seems as if everybody is talking about Jason’s retirement.
M:Yes, his office is filled with gifts. I gave him a T-shirt with a baseball pattern on it.
W:That’s nice. I’ll get him something this afternoon. Hope it’s not late.
Text 4
W:Did you go to Cooper’s last night?
M:No, was there anything special?
W:Yes, the employees dressed up as movie characters, and every customer received a discount card.
M:That was interesting.
Text 5
W:Oh, the road is jammed with traffic again. We are going to be late for work.
M:Let’s make a U-turn at the next crossroads and try another way.
Text 6
W: Do you think Janet could make it?
M:I’m sure she can. Have you tried calling her?
W:Yes, of course. But I can’t get through. The flight has already been called twice. What are we going to do? Board without her? I should have reminded her at the office yesterday. She may have totally forgotten it.
M:Take it easy, Sarah. Let me call her home number. Oh, there she is.
Text 7

Text 8
W:Ethan, have you thought about getting your own house?

W:Um... Not sure yet. Right now, I enjoy getting my meals cooked for me everyday.
M: Do you pay a contribution to the house?
W: Of course, I do. But it’s still much less than I would pay to live in my own flat.Right?
M:Obviously.
W:The only thing I don’t like is that my mom wants to know every part of my life.Becky, what are you doing tomorrow? Where? With whom? The same questions everyday.
M:Moms are like that. They ask because they care. You’ve got to be patient with them. My parents ask those questions too, but I may not move out soon. The thought of leaving them fills me with fear. What if one of them falls over? What if they both have a fall together?
W:That would be terrible.
Text 9
W:It’s a pretty good conference, huh?

Text 10
W:Welcome to Star Fitness Club. I’m Tina Harrison. Before you start, I’d like to offer you some tips. We all know that regular exercise is important, but few of us know how to exercise properly. I’ve seen many people make the same workout mistakes in this place. One mistake people often make is sticking to the same routine. It is not good for building up your muscles. I’d like to suggest that you change your routine every other month. What’s more, you can try different kinds of workouts, such as jogging, biking, or swimming. This can help keep your whole body in shape. Another mistake most people make is to workout intensely almost every day. You need to give your body a break, and allow time for the muscles to grow. It is not the harder the better. Two hard workout days every week is enough. If you really hate to skip a day, you can plan easy exercises on other days. However, experts’ suggestion is that you take one day off completely each week.

Chapter 2: Stratford upon Avon
It was a sunny day in October 1579 when I first met Will, just outside Stratford, near a big field of apple trees.
I saw a boy up in one of the trees.
He had red hair and looked about two years older than me.
“What are you doing up there?” I called.
“Just getting a few apples.” he said, smiling.
“Those are farmer Nash's apples,” I said, “And he'll send his dogs after you if he sees you.”
“Mr.Nash's gone to market,” the boy said, “Come on, they're good apples.”
Next minute, I was up the tree with him, but Will was wrong.
Farmer Nash wasn't at the market, and a few minutes later, we saw his angry red face above the wall on the far side of the field.
Will and I ran like the wind and only stopped when we reached the river.
We sat down to eat our apples.
Will was 15 and lived in Henley Street.
He told me his father was John Shakespeare and he had a sister, Joan, and two younger brothers, Gilbert and Richard.
There was another sister who died, I learnt later.
And the next year, he had another brother, little Edmund, the baby of the family.
“Now what about you?” he asked.
“There's only me and my sister,” I said, “My parents are dead and we live with my mother's brother. He's a shoemaker in Ely Street, and I work for him, what do you do?”
“I go to Mr. Jenkins School in Church Street,” Will said, “every day from 7 o'clock until 5 o'clock, not Sundays, of course.”
I was sorry for him.
“Isn't it boring?” I asked.
“Sometimes, usually it's all right.” He lay back and put his hands behind his head, “But we have to read and learn all these Latin writers. I want to read modern writers and English writers like Jeffrey Chaucer, can you read?”He asked.
“Of course I can read,” I said, “I went to school.”
Will sat up and began to eat another apple.
“I want to be a writer,” he said. “A poet, I want that more than anything in the world.”
We were friends from that day until the day he died.
We met nearly every day, and he taught me a lot about books and poetry and writers.
He always had his nose in a book.
When Will left school, he worked for his father in Henley Street.
John Shakespeare was a glove maker, and he had other business too, like buying and selling sheep, but Will wasn't interested.
“What are we going to do, Toby?” he said to me one day, “We can't spend all our lives making shoes and gloves.”
“Will,”I said, “we could run away to sea and be sailors, sail round the world like Francis Drake.”
Drake sailed back to Plymouth in 1581 after his three-year journey round the world, but we were still in Stratford.
We made lots of plans, but nothing ever came of them.
Will was still reading a lot, and he was already writing poems himself.
He sometimes showed them to me, and I said they were very good.
I didn't really know anything about poetry then, but he was my friend.
Will was not happy with his writing.
“I've got so much to learn, Toby.” he said, “So much to learn.”
Poor Will, He had a lot to learn about women too.
One day in October 1582, he came to my house with a long face.
“I'll never leave Stratford,” he said.
“Why not?” I asked, “We'll get away one day, you'll see.”
“Perhaps you will,” he said, “But I'm going to be married in a few weeks time to Anne Hathaway.”
Mymouth fell open and stayed open.
“Married to Anne Hathaway? Is that the Hathaways over at Shott Toy?”
“Yes.”Will said.
I was working on some shoes on the table, and Will picked one up and looked at it. “Will, she's a fine girl?”
“Of course.”
I said uncomfortably, “But, but Will, she's 26 and you're only 18.”
“I know,” Will said, “But I've got to marry her.”
“Oh no,” I said, “You mean She's…”
“That's right,” said Will, “In about 6 month time, I'm going to be a father.”

(Text 1)
W:Jack, are you going camping with your friends this weekend?
M: It depends. If it’s sunny, we’ll go.
W:The weatherman says it’s going to rain
M: In that case, we’ll go to the cinema instead.
(Text 2)
W:Excuse me, could you mind my bags for a moment? I want to buy some food at the convenience store.
M: No problem. But be quick. It was announced that my train will arrive in 10 minutes.
(Text 3)
W:Bob came out of hospital last Friday. Have you got a chance to visit him?
M:I plan to see him this Saturday.
W:Aren’t you going to the conference then?
M:No. It has been rescheduled, the next Monday.
(Text 4)
M:Sorry, Miss. We made a terrible mistake adding up the bill. Here is the ten dollars we have to return to you.
W:Oh, I didn’t notice that. It’s OK. Don’t blame the waiter. He’s been really nice.
(Text 5)
W: Do you think we should get Steve a book for the new year?
M:Books are good. But Steve wouldn’t take just any book. He has to have this particular one on geography.
(Text 6)
M:Hello, Sara.
W:Hello, David. I can’t come for dinner tonight. Sorry.
M:Oh, what happened?
W:We’ve got a new case and things get pretty crazy here in the office.
M:Well, then I’ll come to you.
W:No, no, not tonight. Let me see if I can arrange another night.
M: Sara, please. We need to talk. It’s about my job.
W:Then tell me on the phone.
M:No, it’s better if we do it in person. How about tomorrow night?
W:I’m not sure. You can give me a call tomorrow afternoon.
M:OK.
(Text 7)
W:Jim will call on us this afternoon. Do you know where he is now?
M: Er… wait. Let me see. He has sent two messages saying that he’s done with his work at the office and got a taxi and ... and he’ll arrive in twenty minutes.
W: We can’t keep him waiting outside our home. We have to hurry.
M:But it takes at least half an hour to get at the city center by bus. Look at the traffic.
W:Let’s get off. We can save at least twenty minutes by walking through the park.
M:Are you sure?
W:Yes. A hundred percent.
(Text 8)
W:Morning, Mark.
M:Morning, Clara. How was your weekend?
W:Great. I went to my grandpa’s. He invited us to pick vegetables on his farm. My daughter had a great time there. What about you?
M:Oh, I had a truly incredible experience. I dropped by a yard sale on Saturday and got several books.
W:Novels?
M: A novel and two poetry collections. As I leafed through the novel, a piece of paper fell out. It was an air ticket from 2012. The flight was from Los Angeles to Chicago and the name on the ticket was Ashley Louis.
W:Was it?
M:Yes! Ashley, my sister! In 2012, she lived in Los Angeles and her husband worked in Chicago. Both of them often flew between the two cities. I asked the seller where he got the book. He said it was bought at a second-hand bookstore in Los Angeles three years ago. Last year, he and his family moved from Los Angeles to Philadelphia.
W:So, all the way across the country, your sister’s old book landed in your hands. That’s really crazy.
(Text 9)
W:Victor, you’ve been here in Indiana for six weeks now. How are you feeling?
M: I think I’ve got used to college life, going to classes, working out and hanging out with my friends. Though there’s pressure to meet deadlines, life here is never boring.
W:What’s been hard about being an Indiana basketball player?
M:Well, the training is very competitive — weightlifting and running everyday. It’s not like high school. In high school, I really didn’t have to do that. I’m just trying to get used to it. And I think I am.
W: At this point, how do you see yourself fitting into this group?
M: I think we are all different. George is from Britain. Chris and Leo are from Australia. I’m from France. And the rest are Americans. But I get along with everybody. You know, we are really starting to bond. It’s great to see how we grow each day as a team.
W:Thanks, Victor. I wish you a very happy and fruitful stay in Indiana.
(Text 10)

Chapter 1: Toby remembers
My name is Toby.
I'man old man, 83 this spring.
My house is right in the middle of Stratford upon Avon, and I can watch the street market from my window.
But I live very quietly now, I'm just an old man sitting in a chair.
I once knew the greatest man in England for 30 years, I was his friend.
I worked with him in the through the good times and the bad times.
He was a good friend to me.
He was also the best playwright, the best poet that ever lived in England.
Will Shakespeare was his name.
I saw all his plays in the theatre.
People loved them, they shouted, laughed and cried, ate oranges and called for more.
All kinds of people, kings, queens, princes, great lords and ladies, poor people, the boys who held the horses, everyone Will Shakespeare could please them all.
He put me in a play once.
Well,he used my name Toby.
Twelfth Night was the play I remember.
Sir Toby Belch, he was a big fat man who liked drinking too much and having a good time.
Queen Elizabeth I, watched that play on Twelfth Night, the sixth January 1601, she liked it too.
Will's dead now, of course.
He's been dead more than 30 years and no one sees his plays now.
The Puritans have closed all the theatres.
There's no singing, no dancing, no plays.
It wasn't like that in my young days.
We had a good time in London, Will and I.
I've no teeth now, and my hair has all fallen out, but I can still think and remember. I remember when Will and I were young, just boys, really.

Text 1
W:Could you please tell me how I can get to the student dorm building?
M:Sure. Turn left when you walk out of this register office, pass the bookstore and you’ll see it.
Text 2
M: We couldn’t ask for a better day, could we, Barbara?
W: I know, Steve. There isn’t a cloud in the sky. I love this time of year.
M:Me, too. The flowers are beautiful but calling for rain though.
Text 3
M: We got any plans this weekend?
W: We might start with our vegetable garden, then the barbecue.
M:Sounds fun, but I still want to go fishing with George.
Text 4
M:Lisa, I saw Jack this morning.
W:You mean the former designer of our company? What’s he doing these days?
M: He said he’s got a new job as an art reporter.
Text 5
W: Do you often go to the student union, Andrew?
M:Pretty much. Once in a while I meet friends there and I spend a lot of time organizing activities in different clubs or associations.
Text 6
W:What do you think, Terry?
M:Well, it has one more bedroom than the last flat. And the sitting room is big.
W:But there is not enough cupboard space in the kitchen.
M:It’s cheaper than the last one we saw. And it is in a good neighborhood.
W:Well, maybe we’ll have to see if the agent has anything else to show us.
Text 7
M:Thank you, Mrs. Johnson, for what you’ve shared with our listeners. Now, please tell us, do you sometimes feel worried about your daughter, now that she’s grown up?
W:Oh, I worry about her like all parents do. After she graduated from medical school, she went to volunteer medical service in Africa.
M:Wow.
W:That’s okay if communication was fine. But if there was no Internet or telephone connection, we could sometimes go two weeks without getting in touch with each other. That often worries me.
Text 8
W:Now sell yourself in a minute please.
M: I graduated from university two years ago, and have since been working in an accounting company. Apart from the knowledge and skills related to my major,I’m really good with computers. I have a large amount of experience working with big data. I think I’m well qualified for the accountant position here.
W:Good! Why did you choose this company?
M:Peterson has been my dream company all along. You value progress and focus on the quality of work more than the quantity. The flexible working hours and working from home is also attractive.
W:Uh-huh. What do you think is your biggest weakness?
M:Well, when I work, I often concentrate so much on what I’m doing that I may have a hard time dealing with things that come up unexpectedly. That maybe annoying to some people.
W:All right. Thank you very much.
Text 9
W: So Robert, I guess you must be well into your third decade as a writer. How is life treating you?
M:Fourth decade as a writer. Hmm, let me get my calculator out. Well, I guess I have been writing novels since the 1980s. So you’re right. But I have been writing all of my life. And to answer your question, life has been treating me excellently.
W:Can I ask you about your childhood? Were you a bookish child?
M: Ina strange way, I was a non-reader until I turned 9. I used to play basketball in the schoolyards of Brooklyn. My father was a high school teacher of physics and chemistry. And he was a big reader. He would bring books back from his high school library. One day I read the last chapter of a book, the title of which I’ve long since forgotten. I liked it so much that I started reading the remainder. Interestingly, I read the chapters backwards until I got to the beginning. I really loved the experience, and I soon became an eager reader. Then my father would bring piles of books home from the library. And I would read the mall, and they were all fiction. I must add that I started reading the books from the start, as opposed to working backwards.
Text 10
M:Hello, I’m Maxim Vengarov, and I’m very happy to share with you my connection with open Tchaikovsky Competition. It was June 1986 when I came to Moscow to participate in open Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 10 from Chelyabinsk. This was actually the turning point of my life. Then I attended a world music festival in Berlin. And it was interesting to say that a kid made his breakthrough already at the age of 10. And that was me. Now as a judge of thecompetition, I can see clearly the huge challenges facing the musicians in thecompetition. Where else can you see young players playing within ten days—classical works and Russian traditional music before coming to the finalstage? As a musician, it’s important to give maximum attention and time to yourown reflections of your own feelings. So, what I’m really looking for in thecompetition is to meet someone who can touch me musically. I want to see theseed, at least the seed of the great tree that can grow. I would go for this violinist. I would go for this musician.

Chapter 7:Love and Death
Marius lies for a long time between life and death.
But months later, he is well again.
Cosette visits him every day, and this of course, helps him a lot.
His grandfather is happy to have his grandson back and is happy to have a new granddaughter in Cosette.
The two young people marry and live in the house of Marius's grandfather in the Le Marais.
There is a surprise for the young people.
Cosette has money, a lot of money.
Valjean tells them she has 600000 francs.
This pleases Marius's grandfather very much,
But the young people are only interested in love, not in money.
Where does it come from, this money?
Years ago, when Valjean was Monsieur Madeleine with a factory, he was a rich man.
Before he left Montroy, he took his money and the bishop's candlesticks to a secret place.
When he needs money, he goes back there.
Now this money is for Cosette, and the candlesticks stand in Valjean's house in the Rue de l'Homme-Armé.
They look very fine, and Toussaint cleans them every day.
A new life begins for everybody, but there are still secrets from the past., and Valjean wants to tell them he feels old and tired.
Death is coming for him at last, he feels.
He calls Cosette and Marius to his bedside.
“Listen, dearest Cosette, to the story of your mother…” he says.
Cosette hears the story of Fantine's sadlife.”
She learns that Valjean is not her real father.
But in her life, there is only one father, and that is Valjean, she tells him.
“Come closer,my children,” he says, “I love you dearly and I die happy. Come closer, and take my hands.”
Cosette and Marius are by his bed, holding his hands and crying.
His great hands are still, and do not move again.
He lies with his head turned up to the sky, and the light from the bishop's candlesticks falls upon his face.
