  • 063: Total Hell vs. Gratitude with MJ FITZPATRICK

MJ Fitzpatrick is a dynamite Australian and I'm super stoked to have him on the show today. He's got a story that even though the details might be different from yours and mine, the experience, the pain, the tribulation, the total hell he went through might still be very similar to yours.

Y'all. In this conversation, MJ quotes Oprah. and I'm gonna let that sink in for a bit, because I'm SOOOO glad he did! I love her. MJ will forever go in my book as the first male who has quoted Oprah to my face. So amazing.

Today MJ Fitzpatrick and I discuss what it's like to live in hell, the different types of hell, the only thing that can get you out of hell, and how we can get back to joy even if it's just for a brief moment in the midst of hell. We also talk about why it's so stinking common (and yet amazing) to witness someone use their wounds, their experience of hell, to create joy and a life they actually look forward to living.

This is a really good episode y'all. So hang on tight!

    [Insert Audio Block Here]

    Brave Take-Aways

Today's Brave Take-Away is to pop into the Bare Naked Bravery Community and post your own experience of hell vs. gratitude. What kind of hell have you experienced? What made it go away, if at all? Where are you now with gratitude?

The folks in the Bare Naked Bravery Community are so fantastic, that if you're currently in the midst of a hell, I know that without a shadow of a doubt, those folks 1) know what it's like and 2) would love nothing more than to help you through it, even if that just means listening.

  • 061: Forging a Way for Yourself & Your Art with Choreographer KARIN STEVENS

Karin Stevens of Karin Stevens Dance, or KSD for short, is someone who I deeply admire. That has been true for a very long while. She and I got started in the Seattle art/music scenes at about the same time and we worked on a project together that became something really wonderful, for both of us separately and also together.

I know you'll really appreciate how caring and thoughtful and eloquently Karin speaks about some of these subjects we cover today. We cover what it means to forge a career for yourself, how to dance with the dark-side of making art, what it means to value yourself when things aren't going as well as they could be going, and why movement is so important for the world.

If you've ever had those really powerful internal dialogs of "What does this all mean?! and why am I even doing this?!" Then this is the episode for you my friend.

As always, links to the things Karin and I mention are in the show notes for this episode over at barenakedbravery.com - and Karin is already in our Bare Naked Bravery Facebook group. So if you've got follow-up questions, go for it! She and I already have plans to make a follow-up episode for you too! So keep your ears to the ground.

However, today we have a conversation that I know you'll drink fully and deeply. Karin's story contains things we allll go through...

    Brave Take-Aways

I'm so glad Karin got to join us for that! and I know she and I are already working on carving out some more time to make a follow-up episode for y'all.

In the meantime, your Brave Take-Away for this episode is to hop into the Bare Naked Bravery Facebook group and tell us all about your own "dark night of the soul" I know we all have them. I know we all could use a little magic and seeds of wisdom from each other, so please share with us some of the ways you found your way back to purpose, meaning, and living and making art.

Sometimes the bravery we face happens without warning. Sometimes we know it's coming. So when we have advance notice of an oncoming brave season of life, how do we prepare for it? That's what this week's peep show episode is all about. Specifically, how do we lean on our intuition to tell us what we need to prepare and *why* we need those things.

  • 060: Breaking Out of Autopilot & Living a High-Vibe Artistic Life with painter/poet DAVID LESINSKI

Today we get to have a chat with painter and poet, David Lesinski. Ever since Marisa Molina nominated him for the show, I've had my eye on how he's showing up in the world for a several weeks now and I can tell you that today's conversation has the potential to be a hugely life-changing for you, especially if you're an artist. I'm really excited about this one.

David has a mission to provide people with the tools, knowledge, and support necessary to evolve themselves to great states of health and happiness so they can live a fulfilling life and go out and impact the world in a positive way. In the past, David provided this support as as a special education teacher, yoga instructor, meditation teacher, Ayurvedic-based emotional wellness coach and all that. Now, he gets to help people heal and evolve using his Paintings and Poetry...

Today he and I chat about how to break out of autopilot, why us artists shouldn't just stack our metaphorical (or literal) paintings in the garage for no one to see, and how important it is to nurture a high-vibe environment as an artist. I'm fairly certain you're gonna love David's kind and direct wisdom as much as I do.

Okay, so your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to pop into the Bare Naked Bravery Facebook Group and tell us your top 5 favorite ways to surround yourself with these high-vibes David and I were talking about. • 059: Censorship, Invincible Truth & Mentorship with Singer-Songwriter JAN KRIST

Jan Krist is a phenomenal artist. She's a force to be reckoned with and I am so proud to call her my mentor. I met Jan while I was at my post-diagnosis Artist Residency in the mountains of Leavenworth, WA.

Today's recording occurred on the last day of a songwriter's retreat. I snagged her for a quick podcast recording and so I apologize for our energy levels in this conversation. Ha! We were both exhausted but I think that's what makes this episode so raw and real.

We talked about mentorship, what it's like to be censored as an artist, how to use our art to communicate truth, and why artists have a responsibility to make our art. Jan even flipped the conversation back on me and asked some big important questions. (I blushed, you can hear it in my voice!)

I know you're really enjoy this intimate conversation between a mentee and her mentor, Jan Krist. Let's take a listen!

  • 057: How to Be Wrong & Stay Listening with ANDY ZOOK

Today we have the extreme pleasure of talking with Andy Zook of the band "Bears & Other Carnivores." Andy and I met because our mutual friend (who is also a member of the Bare Naked Bravery community) invited both Andy and I to perform a couple songs for a little backyard garden concert several weeks back. While I was *totally* enjoying Andy's songs, Tos, our mutual friend, pulled me aside and said "You've GOT to have Andy on Bare Naked Bravery. Your podcast and his podcast are two I listen to religiously! He'd be perfect!"

And of course, the Bare Naked Bravery community never lets us down! Nominations are the way we get soooo many of our amazing guests on the show and today is no exception!

So yes, Andy also has a podcast. It's called "Bad at Parties" and I know you'll love it too. Remember, as always, all the links to the things we mention today will be in the show notes for this episode over at barenakedbravery.com

I also know you'll love today's chat because we're covering topics like how to put yourself out there as an artist, how to reconcile the fact that you're probably doing things wrong, how to be wrong and still stay listening to your audience. and we also dive into a topic that is near and dear to me: advocacy and art.

    Brave Take-Aways

Okay, so beyond your free Bravery Bundle, your Brave Take-Away from today's show is kinda strange. As an experiment, I'd like you to pick something, safe of course, but see what happens when you do something wrong. Can you stay listening? Does your ego take over? Will you try to explain yourself and hold your ground? Just observe what happens and then hop into the BNB facebook group to tell us what went down and what you noticed!

Andy and I will be in there waiting with baited breath and listening ears for your stories!

If you're not a member of the BNB fb community, you can join us by downloading your Bravery Bundle which will automagically send you a link to join us!

Exposing the threads of heroism stitching together the stories, creativity, and people we admire most. Hosted by singer/songwriter, teaching artist, and creative entrepreneur, Emily Ann Peterson. Her hope is that by listening to others search for and find their bravery, we will all find our own. Each week features a revealing conversation with the authors, musicians, artists, business owners, and other professionals who courageously pour themselves into their work.
