Today is September 1, 2016. Travel back with me to this date in 1980. We’re beginning our second month of baseball time travel, listeners, and as you may have noticed by now I like to keep a certain yin and yang about the podcast. Yesterday we traveled to Florida to see a young Mariano Rivera win the Gulf Coast League ERA title on the final day of the season. So in the interests of keeping things balanced, today we’re traveling to Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where we’ll see a young Wade Boggs lose the International League batting title in his final at bat of the year.

Today is August 31, 2016. Travel back with me to this date in 1990. We’re in Bradenton, Florida, on the back lots of Pirate City, the Pirates’ minor league facility where today we will watch a rookie-league game between the Yankees and the Pirates. There’s no fanfare for these kids; there aren’t even really stands for fans to pack into, but simple metal bleachers. In fact, this game doesn’t really mean anything to anyone except Yankees starting pitcher, 20-year-old Mariano Rivera.

Today is August 30, 2016. Travel back with me to this date in 1916. We’re in Asheville, North Carolina for an afternoon Class D League game between the Asheville Tourists and the Winston-Salem Twins. This is one that we don’t want to be late for, and we likely won’t get too comfortable at, because this nine-inning game between these two teams will be over in a mere 31 minutes, giving it the dubious title of the fastest professional game ever played.

Today is August 29, 2016. Travel back with me to this day in 1986. Yesterday we traveled to the 1971 Little League World Series Championship Game where Lloyd McClendon and his Gary, Indiana team came to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning needing to score nine runs. Today we’ll travel to Anaheim Stadium where the California Angels will do what the Gary, Indiana Little League couldn’t: score eight runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a walk-off win.

Once again in New York, we’re in the midst of a changing nation and owners and executives from all sixteen Major League Baseball teams are meeting to discuss the future of their sport. Specifically, whether or not that future should include black players. We’ll see some familiar faces here today. Unfortunately, it will be ugly side of some of these familiar faces, because today these men will find themselves on the wrong side of history as they vote against integration in baseball.

Today is August 26, 2016. Travel back with me to this day in 1991. This a week of guys named Brien as we once again travel back to New York, this time for the 1991 MLB Draft. But unlike our journey yesterday when we watched Brian Lesher make his Major League debut and Major League history, today we will see the other, sadder side of the game. Today we’ll watch the New York Yankees take 19-year old left-handed pitcher Brien Taylor as the first overall pick of the draft, and we’ll watch as Taylor goes from being the number one prospect in baseball to a guy who will never make it past Double A.

Today is August 25, 2016. Travel back with me to this day in 1996. We’re in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium for an afternoon game against the Oakland Athletics. It’s a full house here at Yankee Stadium and why not? The Yankees are in first place atop the American League East with a record of 74-55 entering today’s game. Shortstop Derek Jeter is having a great rookie season, and this is just a well-balanced, easy-to-watch Yankees team that will go on to beat the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. But we aren’t here for the Yankees. We’re here for the debut of A’s right fielder Brian Lesher.
