Today is January 3, 2017. Travel back with me to this day in 1943. We’re out in sunny Southern California where Yankees pitcher Red Ruffing has taken an off-season job at a local defense plant, doing his part to contribute to the United States’ war effort. But today Red’s country will ask more of the 37-year old, summoning him for a draft physical that will lead to a two-and-a-half year stint in the armed service.

It won’t last long – not even a full season, but it will prove to be a resilient little league that sees several reincarnations and produces a star or two before collapsing for good in 1922.

We’re in New York, at Shea Stadium, where the temporarily homeless Yankees are playing their home games while Yankee Stadium is being renovated. Today’s matchup is a doubleheader against Detroit in which Yankees third baseman Graig Nettles will hit two home runs on the day, one of which is the game-winner in the second game of today’s contests. But Nettles’ most important hit of the day will be a broken-bat single to center field.

And though this game will make Yankees fans happy – the Yanks will beat the Mariners 10-2 – the purpose of our journey here today is to experience a treat for the ears. Unbeknownst to everyone at the game today, this will be the last time we hear the legendary voice of Yankees public address announcer Bob Sheppard work a game.

Today is September 4, 2016. Travel back with me to this date in 1978. We’re in Pittsburgh where the Pirates are hosting the Mets and a 23-year old first baseman named Dorian “Doe” Boyland is making his Major League debut. His shot will come in the seventh inning of the first game of today’s doubleheader, but Manager Chuck Tanner will immediately regret this decision and replace Doe Boyland with a pinch-hitter in the middle of his at bat. And instead of ending a hit, like Doe has dreamed of, his first Major League at bat is recorded as a strikeout while he sits and watches from the bench.

But instead we’re headed to Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia to witness a performance that is terribly good, instead of just terrible. Because today in a 5-4 Cubs victory over the Phillies, Cubs pitcher Rick Sutcliffe will strike out 15, tying the franchise record.
