Battered Herons: An Inter Miami Podcast

Was the 7-1 win the beginning of an Inter Miami turnaround — or just one incredible night?

After going five consecutive matches without a victory, Inter Miami finally broke through in spectacular fashion, destroying CF Montréal 7-1 behind four goals from Lionel Messi.

Now comes the next test.

On this episode of Battered Herons, we're previewing Saturday night's matchup between Inter Miami and Atlanta United as the Herons look to prove that their performance against Montréal wasn't a one-off.

What should Miami carry over from that victory? What still needs to improve? Which lineup should we see against Atlanta? And can Messi follow up one of the most dominant individual performances we've seen from him in an Inter Miami shirt?

We'll break down the matchup, our preferred starting XI, players to watch, tactical keys and what Atlanta could do to cause Miami problems.

There's also another major storyline hanging over this game as Kily González prepares to begin his tenure with Inter Miami and a newly reshaped roster comes out of the transfer window.

One win ended the streak.

Now Miami needs to prove it was actually a turning point.

The transfer window is officially CLOSED, and Inter Miami’s roster looks very different.

On this episode of Battered Herons, we’re taking a complete look at Inter Miami’s business during the transfer window — the players who arrived, the players who departed and what all of these moves tell us about the direction of the club.

There were additions designed to strengthen a roster that still has championship expectations, but some of the most interesting moves came in the other direction.

Inter Miami moved several of its homegrown players to other MLS clubs, continuing to turn its academy development into valuable assets around the league.

Was moving these young players the right decision? Did Miami receive enough value in return? And what does it say about the pathway from the Inter Miami academy to the first team?

We’ll break down every major incoming and outgoing move, where the roster improved, where Miami may have gotten weaker, the positions that still concern us and whether the front office did enough before the window slammed shut.

And now that Kily González is taking over, how well does this newly constructed roster fit what the new manager wants to do?

The moves are done. The roster is set.

Did Inter Miami get better?

Lionel Messi has officially played his final game for Argentina.

After more than two decades representing his country, Messi announced his retirement from international soccer, bringing one of the greatest international careers in the history of the sport to an end. His final appearance for Argentina came in the 2026 World Cup Final against Spain.

But on Battered Herons, there’s another huge question we need to ask:

What does this mean for Lionel Messi’s future with Inter Miami?

Messi is retiring from Argentina — not from professional soccer — and remains under contract with Inter Miami through 2028.

Could eliminating international travel and national-team camps allow Messi to extend his club career? Does this make it more realistic that he actually finishes that contract in Miami? Or should today’s announcement serve as a reminder that we’re approaching the final chapter of Messi’s career altogether?

The timing makes the conversation even more fascinating after Messi just scored four goals in Inter Miami’s 7-1 victory over Montréal, showing that even at 39, he can still completely take over an MLS match.

We’ll discuss Messi’s decision, his incredible Argentina legacy, what international retirement could mean for his workload and availability with the Herons, and the biggest question of all:

How much longer will we get to watch Lionel Messi in an Inter Miami shirt?

Y Messi estuvo simplemente imparable.

FINALLY! Inter Miami is back in the win column.

After five consecutive matches without a victory and weeks of frustration surrounding this team, the Herons finally ended their winless streak with a much-needed victory over CF Montréal.

And once again, Lionel Messi delivered, this time with a hat trick.

On this Battered Herons Postgame Reaction, we’re breaking down Miami’s first victory in six matches and what was another huge performance from Messi when his team desperately needed it.

What makes this result even more interesting is the unusual situation surrounding the coaching staff. Guillermo Hoyos was unavailable because of his suspension, while newly appointed head coach Kily González has yet to officially begin coaching the team.

We’ll discuss what changed against Montréal, Messi’s performance, which players stepped up, whether we saw legitimate improvements or simply a better result, and what this victory means as Kily González prepares to take over.

One win doesn’t erase all of the problems we’ve discussed over the past several weeks. The goalkeeper, defense, midfield balance and overall construction of this team still deserve scrutiny.

But after five straight without a victory, we’ll take it.

The streak is over. Now can Kily González build on it?

A new era is officially beginning for Inter Miami.

Cristian “Kily” González is the new head coach of the Herons, taking over a team desperately searching for answers after a brutal run of results.

On this episode of Battered Herons, we break down the decision to hire Kily González, what we know about his coaching philosophy, the type of soccer he wants his teams to play, and—most importantly—whether he is the right manager to get this Inter Miami roster back on track.

What changes could we see immediately? How could his arrival affect the starting XI? Can he fix Miami’s defensive problems, bring balance back to the midfield and get this attack producing again?

And Kily doesn’t have much time to settle in.

We’ll also preview Saturday’s matchup against CF Montréal, discuss the lineup we’d like to see, the biggest tactical questions surrounding Miami and what we’re looking for in the first match of this new chapter.

After everything that has gone wrong recently, can a new coach finally change the direction of Inter Miami’s season?

The phone is starting to ring for Noah Allen.

Reports indicate that the Chicago Fire have contacted Inter Miami about acquiring Allen in a deal worth around $2.5 million. While it currently appears that a move to Chicago may not happen, there's a much bigger story here:

Other MLS teams are interested in Noah Allen.

On this episode of Battered Herons, we're discussing what that means for Allen's future and whether Inter Miami could eventually be tempted into selling him.

And our question is simple: Why would you want to?

At a time when Inter Miami's defense has been one of the biggest concerns surrounding the team, Allen has become an extremely valuable piece of the roster. His age, versatility and ability to play multiple positions make him exactly the type of player Miami should be trying to keep.

We'll discuss Chicago's reported interest, whether $2.5 million should even get Miami's attention, what Allen means to this roster, what it would take for us to consider selling him and whether interest from other clubs could eventually lead to a bigger offer.

Inter Miami has plenty of problems to solve right now.

Creating another one by selling Noah Allen shouldn't be one of them.

It’s time for a State of the Herons.

Inter Miami entered this stretch of the season with championship expectations, but right now, things are heading in the wrong direction. Poor results, inconsistent performances and problems throughout the lineup have left us with far more questions than answers.

On this episode of Battered Herons, we’re taking a break from the normal match preview/postgame format and looking at the big picture surrounding Inter Miami.

How did we get here? What has gone wrong? Is this simply a bad stretch, or are there fundamental problems with the way this roster is constructed and playing?

We’ll examine the goalkeeper situation, defensive struggles, the lack of balance and verticality in midfield, an attack that hasn’t consistently produced enough, Guillermo Hoyos’ tactics and lineup decisions, and how the pieces on this roster actually fit together.

But most importantly: Can Inter Miami turn this around?

There is still plenty of talent on this team and plenty of season remaining. We’ll discuss what needs to change, whether those solutions are already on the roster, and what we need to see over the coming weeks to believe this team can still become the contender we expected.

Things look bad right now.

But is Inter Miami broken—or just going through a crisis they can still fix?

Inter Miami’s struggles have officially reached another level.

The Herons returned home Saturday night desperately needing a victory and instead delivered another extremely disappointing performance, falling 2-1 to Toronto FC.

On this episode of Battered Herons, we’re going live immediately after the final whistle to react to another frustrating night and ask a question that is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid:

Has Inter Miami hit rock bottom?
