Onesimus’ Transformation

Whilst on the run, Philemon’s slave Onesimus had met Paul, and had been converted. Paul therefore had little choice but to ask Philemon to forgive Onesimus, and to accept him as a brother.

Forgiveness Brings You Healing

Forgiving real-life sinners in our own lives is difficult. But Jesus pleads with us to show the love we know to the people who have hurt and damaged us. It takes work. It takes prayer. It takes courage. But it will heal you as the victim.

The Disciples Identity is Shaken

Imagine the disciples shock when they heard Jesus’ say that a core part of their identity was to be rubbed out. Jesus’ words would have left them feeling insecure, anxious and wanting information.

A New Identity

Jesus explains to them the events he describes will simply be the beginning of the birth pangs of the Kingdom of God. And as part of this Kingdom, what the disciples needed – as well as you and me – was a new identity in him.

Barriers to Being Fully Connected to God

The best place for us to find our identity is inside of God’s love. Is there anything that is stopping us from being fully connected to God?

What Kept People Going through the Horrors of War?

Perhaps what sustained people in the battlefields of the First & Second World Wars or in the conflicts since was some kind of vision for the future. We can see this in some of the poetry that comes out of the two world wars.

John’s Revelation of the Future

In his vision of the future, John mentions the sea. The sea says something about perpetual unrest. The absence of sea hints at the unruffled state of solid peace that will prevail over the new world order.

New Jerusalem is not described as a geographical phenomenon, but as a bride. This is the most intimate relationship of all.

Our Remembrances Must Be Tempered by God’s Vision of the Future

Our remembrances today, and the love for our country that they generate must be tempered by John’s vision of the end.

An Active Faith

The whole of Scripture emphasises an active faith.

At first glance, Paul’s words seem right up The Salvation Army’s street! After all, we were born to fight. But here, the phrase “fight the good fight of faith” is not a military metaphor. It’s an athletics metaphor.

Paul’s Active Verbs

Paul tells Timothy to shun evil things. He encourages us to follow hard after godly character. He says we must take hold of the eternal life that Jesus has already given and promised us.

A Salvation Army Call to Arms

This Salvation Army call to arms reminds us the life of a Salvationist is a call to action. And it is strengthened by doing something. You know what you believe. That faith must lead to action.

Memory is Amazing

Memory is the ability to encode, store, retain and subsequently recall information and past experiences in the human brain. It is the use of past experience to affect or influence current behaviour. It’s amazing! And in my experience, we remember what is most important to us.

A Reminder to Remain Devoted to God

What was important to Moses as he addressed God’s people was that they would remain devoted to God. Moses says we must love our God with our whole being. Anything short of total love for God means he’s not really our God, the Lord alone.

How Can You Ensure You Are Remembering Your Faith?

Moses suggests a number of ways we can ensure you are remembering your faith. What will you do this week to remind yourself that your whole being desires to love God and make him Lord of your life?

The Philadelphian church was not criticised by Jesus. They had got it right.

A Place of Hope

The Philadelphian church was a place of hope and opportunity for the community. It was engaged in spiritual warfare but was able to combat the Enemy by living the life of holiness.

The Power in Small Strength

As were reminded in this Salvation Army corps anniversary sermon, there was a blessing and even an advantage in being small in strength. It’s then you have to lean back on the faithfulness of God.

As Christians, and particularly as Salvationists, we too are sometimes guilty of being so busy we forget to be the people God calls us to be.

Bible Text: Proverbs 31:1-9 | Preacher: Lieutenant Rob Westwood-Payne | Series: We Believe | In this sermon on The Salvation Army and social justice, we are reminded The Salvation Army’s Founders were simply reflecting God’s heart for poor.

A Gospel of Action

They were stirred up by by the poverty and injustice they saw around them. They realised that if the gospel was to have any effect on the poor of their time, then it needed to be backed up with actions.

The Salvation Army and Social Justice

Fighting for justice for poor was Jesus’ mission, the reason he came to earth. If social action was Jesus’ fight, then it’s ours too. Jesus’ mission is now The Salvation Army’s mission.

Jesus paid for your salvation on the cross.

We Unclench Our Fists

There was just one thing the man lacked. He had everything going for him, except eternal life. But he was unwilling to unclench his fists. If I offer you a gift when your hands are full, then the only way you can accept it is if you put down what you are holding and unclench your fists.

Will you unclench your fists and embrace God?
