  • Nuclear talks between US and Iran end in Geneva | BBC News
A second round of talks between Iran and the United States, aimed at resolving their dispute over Tehran's nuclear programme, have ended in the Swiss city of Geneva.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the two countries had reached an understanding on the main "guiding principles", but work still needs to be done. The US has not yet commented.
The indirect discussions followed repeated military threats by Washington against Iran over the country's deadly crackdown on anti-government protests, as well as its nuclear activities.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One ahead of the latest talks, US President Donald Trump said he believed Iran wanted to make a deal.

  • UK government abandons plans to delay 30 council elections | BBC News
The UK government has abandoned plans to delay 30 council elections in England, following advice this could be unlawful.
Local Government Secretary Steve Reed had approved delays for the ballots until 2027, arguing some councils were worried about the cost of running elections for authorities which are due to be abolished in a major reorganisation of local government.
Reform UK had launched a legal challenge against the plans to delay May's elections, which was due to be heard in the High Court on Thursday.
The move was welcomed by opposition parties, who had branded the delays undemocratic.

  • Hillary Clinton accuses Trump administration of Epstein files 'cover-up' in BBC interview | BBC News
Hillary Clinton has accused US President Donald Trump's administration of a "cover-up" over its handling of files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
"Get the files out. They are slow-walking it," the former US secretary of state told the BBC in Berlin, where she attended the annual World Forum.
The White House insisted that by releasing the files they had done "more for the victims than Democrats ever have".
Millions of new files relating to the late sex offender Epstein were released by the US Department of Justice earlier this month.

  • Was Alexei Navalny killed by a dart frog toxin? | Global News Podcast
Five European countries say the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was killed using a deadly toxin found in poison dart frogs in South America.
France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom say traces of epibatidine were found in samples from Navalny's body and "highly likely" resulted in his death in a Siberian penal colony two years ago. It says only the Russian government had the "means, motive and opportunity" to use this poison - which is apparently 200 times stronger than morphine.
The Kremlin dismissed the finding as "an information campaign" and has rejected accusations that it was responsible for the death of the fierce Putin critic.
The BBC's world news correspondent Joe Inwood takes us through what we know about the opposition leader's death, and what the toxin report reveals about Russia's access to and use of rare poisons.

  • Markiplier: 'Iron Lung broke world record for amount of blood' | BBC News
Iron Lung is YouTuber Markiplier’s debut sci‑fi horror film, based on the hit indie game where a convict explores an ocean made entirely of human blood - alone. The movie debuted with a $17.8M opening weekend, climbing past $43M worldwide.
Markiplier wrote, directed, financed, and starred in the film, and he’s been open about the production’s wildest challenge: using more fake blood than any movie before it. As a result, real‑world blood donation drives took place across the US, with fans lining up outside cinemas to give blood after screenings.
Markiplier worked closely with game creator David Szymanski to keep the world authentic, relying heavily on physical effects. He spoke to Newsbeat's Naomi de Souza about the film and its challenges.

  • UK considers significant increase to defence spending | BBC News
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is considering making a significant increase in defence spending, the BBC has learned.
Last year Starmer promised to spend 2.5% of national economic output – measured as gross domestic product (GDP) - on core defence by April 2027.
Now, Downing Street is mulling over the idea of meeting the existing spending target earlier than planned at a potential cost of billions of pounds.
The PM signalled his attitude over the weekend at the Munich Security Conference, telling world leaders: "To meet the wider threat, it's clear that we are going to have to spend more, faster."

  • US and Iran to hold second round of talks over nuclear deal | BBC News
US and Iranian officials are preparing to hold a second round of talks on Tuesday in Switzerland, but US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the discussions are “likely to be complicated”.
This follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying the US must require Iran to relinquish all of its enriched uranium and be barred from enriching more, as part of any nuclear deal with Tehran.
In a speech in Jerusalem on Sunday, Netanyahu outlined several conditions he wanted, including that "all enriched material has to leave Iran" and that "there should be no enrichment capability".
