Stress can totally derail us. While just the right amount of stress can be helpful in giving you the “juice” you need to perform, you may often become stressed out— at home, at work, or at school. This brings on “the stress response”— turning on the “fight or flight” response. The stress hormones—adrenaline and cortisol— start pumping through your system and you become flooded by emotions, especially anxiety and depression. You either try to beat the stress down (“I shouldn’t be feeling this way!”), or you want to bolt — to run away from it, hide under the covers, wishing it would all go away. All of this debilitates you: you feel exhausted, your work suffers, you loose interest in what you’re doing, or you don’t do it well. This has an adverse effect on your work, your quality of life, and your relationships on the job and at home.
On this episode we’re in conversation with Christy Matta, MA, author of The Stress Response: How Dialectical Behavior Therapy Can Free You from Needless Anxiety, Worry, Anger & Other Symptoms of Stress. Christy has worked in mental health for over twenty years as a clinician, trainer and administrator specializing in the treatment of emotion deregulation and behavioral problems. Do check out her informative, helpful website.
We’re talking about what the stress response is — how can you recognize it in yourself? And we’re offering specific tools: how can you reduce your stress and improve your performance in whatever you’re doing? As we know, stress impacts performance in every area of life, whether you’re an executive, a caretaker, an athlete, a parent, or a student. You can explore Dr. B’s website for more information.
