“From the moment the shark attacked him, Chris Blowes was in a race against time. He should have died, but he didn’t.”
In this episode, I speak to the extraordinary Chris Blowes who is a great white shark attack survivor and above-the-knee amputee. On Anzac Day 2015 at Right Point, Fishery Bay in South Australia, Chris Blowes was engulfed in the jaws of a 5 metre great white shark. With Chris, his board, and the shark disappearing beneath the surface, his friends quickly sprang to rescue him, all while the ever-present shark loomed below.
At just 26 years old, Chris had lost a leg and suffered severe lacerations to his left side. He had lost a significant amount of blood and was stranded at the bottom of a cliff, over 30km from the nearest country hospital, with minimal acute trauma resources available. Barely alive, Chris received nearly 90 minutes of CPR in the ambulance and emergency department of Port Lincoln Hospital.
Chris has embraced stepping outside his comfort zone and views his experiences as learning opportunities. Today, Chris is a proud father and husband, the managing director of his successful building business, an Australian Para Surf Champion, and has represented Australia at the World Para Surf Titles in California. Chris Blowes is living proof that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
