Behind The Curtain: Mysteries of the Past and Present with Josh and Ryan

This week, we continue our analysis of Genesis 3. We take time to break down the conversation between the serpent and the woman. We also look at possible interpretations of the name of the "bad" tree. Why would Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit? What did they expect to happen?

We officially start our review of the fall of mankind in Genesis with an analysis of who is possibly the most notorious character in the Bible. Was the deceiver in Genesis 3 just a snake or something more? What should we infer about the serpent from the tale in Genesis 3? The answers to these questions might be more interesting than you think.

Time to go back to the beginning. In order to build the picture of Eden, we have to analyze Genesis 1 and 2 and ask a few important questions. What or who is "the Word of the Lord"? what was the scene in Eden? What role was humanity meant to play? It is important to build this picture in our minds as we approach Genesis 3, commonly called "the fall of man."

Picking up where we left off in the previous episode, you'll hear some familiar passages today, but possibly in a different light. If you know what you're reading, the Old Testament paints a color picture of an active, spiritual world. Mentions of wild animals, arrows, and pestilence can not be taken at face value. And what about the "sons of God?" Let's see what is really going on behind this language curtain. Recognizing an active spiritual world with many players sets us up to discuss the fall of man in Genesis next week and fun fringe topics soon.

Today's episode begins to pull back the curtain on the Israelite attitude towards God vs. gods. Were they true monotheists as we think of it today? What did they think about the gods of other nations? We will look at passages like Deuteronomy 32 and Psalms 82 for clues. This is just part one of the discussion, so enjoy and stay tuned for part two next week.
